Niantic is working on its own wearables, which is why Apple Watch Pokemon Go app still hasn’t shipped
Over the weekend we reported that developer Niantic had put its Apple Watch app development on hold and therefore likely wouldn’t be making its previously promised end of the year deadline. Niantic attempted to shoot the story down with a vague tweet saying the app is coming soon, but it wouldn’t confirm its promised end of year release date. LG says delays & no confirmed date for 5K UltraFine, but most readers prepared to wait
LG has confirmed that the 5K UltraFine monitor Apple recommends for use with the new MacBook Pro models has been delayed. A company representative told us that LG does not yet have a confirmed date for availability.

Comment: Trump’s promised repatriated earnings deal could help AAPL’s case against Irish tax ruling
Apple has finally launched its legal challenge to an EU ruling that it must pay an additional €13B ($14B) in tax after a special tax deal offered by the Irish government was found to be illegal. The Irish government had already submitted its own appeal against the ruling.
On the face it, the EU case is a strong one. The deal with the Irish government – detailed in a Bloomberg analysis – meant that the vast majority of Apple’s taxes were assigned to a ‘head office’ that wasn’t tax resident anywhere in the world, and which therefore paid no taxes at all. This is how, according to the EU case, Apple effectively paid as little as 0.005% tax on billions of dollars of European sales …

macOS 10.12.2 fixed vulnerability that allowed Thunderbolt device to obtain password from locked Mac [Video]
Security researcher Ulf Frisk has shared details of a vulnerability in macOS 10.12.1 and lower that allowed anyone with physical access to a locked Mac to quickly and easily obtain the password simply by plugging in a $300 Thunderbolt device.

Super Mario Run saw 10M downloads, $4M revenue, on day one – but likely won’t beat Pokémon Go
We learned last week that Nintendo’s Super Mario Run became the highest grossing app within hours of release, and analytics company App Annie has now put some numbers on this. The company reports that it notched up over 10M downloads and generated more than $4M revenue on its first day.
Given its visibility, it should come as no surprise that it became the top ranked game by downloads across 60 countries immediately after launch. Based on preliminary estimates, this includes over 10 million downloads and over $4 million in consumer spend worldwide on December 15.
The firm says that it will be particularly interesting to compare the performance of the game against Pokémon Go, given the two different revenue models …

Apple to appeal 13 billion euro EU tax ruling this week, says company was targeted to ‘generate lots of headlines’
If you weren’t in the festive holiday spirit already, Apple is launching its legal challenge this week to oppose a 13 billion euro charge levied on the company in August by the EU Commission for supposed illegal tax benefits from Ireland.
Apple will argue that the EU ignored tax experts and disregarded corporate law. Bruce Sewell, Apple SVP, said that the company was targeted to ‘generate lots of headlines’ in a statement.
