Comment: There’s no clear winner in the current web TV wars
I have a pretty clear idea about what I want my modern TV experience to look like: access to paid video apps for on demand content, a primary app for streaming live TV, and access to this on all my devices at home and mobile.
You can get pretty close to this experience on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and Mac today, and there are services coming soon that will add to the competition, but there’s no clear winner in the web TV war yet…

Irish government formally submits appeal against €13B Apple tax ruling
The Irish government is today formally appealing against a European Union ruling that it should have claimed an additional €13B in tax from Apple, which has its European headquarters in the country. The EU ruled that offering Apple a sweetheart tax rate of just 2.5% amounted to illegal state aid.

Apple could be able to pay just 10% tax to repatriate overseas profits under Trump plan
Apple hasn’t exactly seen eye-to-eye with president-elect Donald Trump, responding dismissively to Trump’s call for a boycott of Apple products, and witholding support from the GOP convention. But it seems they do agree on one topic: allowing companies to repatriate profits from overseas subsidiaries at a reduced rate of tax.
Apple has repeatedly called for tax reform to permit this, and Bloomberg reports that Trump promised to do so while speaking at the Economic Club of New York prior to the election …

New MacBook Pro outsold every competing laptop in just five days – Slice Intelligence
Apple already told us that the 2016 MacBook Pro had set a new online sales record, backed by supply-chain reports of increased component orders, but Slice Intelligence has provided our first look at the scale of those orders. The company reports that the new models took just five days to outsell every high-profile laptop on the U.S. market.
It has already outsold combined sales of the Dell XPS 13 and 15 – probably the closest equivalents in the Windows world – which have been on sale for more than ten months. It has also sold almost four times as many units as Microsoft’s flagship laptop, the new Surface Book.
The company additionally compared sales to Apple’s own 12-inch MacBook, to see how its pro laptops were faring against its ultraportable model …
