Review: Osmo for iPad is a fun game system for kids that mixes digital apps with real world objects

Osmo is a game system for iPad that uses the tablet’s camera to interact with real-world objects like puzzle pieces or drawings (buy the starter kit for $69). There are several Osmo apps, spanning drawing, literacy, physics puzzles and more. Each one offers a mini ‘augmented reality’ experience where the iPad apps bring the real-world accessories to life.

The basic Osmo system contains a dock/stand for the iPad to sit on and a reflective mirror that attaches to the FaceTime camera. This adjusts the optics so that the camera is essentially recording the table area in front of the iPad, so that the Osmo apps can ‘see’ the objects placed there. Read on for a walkthrough of how well this all works …

What should Apple call next year’s iPhone? iPhone 8, or something else? [Poll]

With next year’s iPhone expected to be a major redesign, you can put good money on it that it won’t be called the iPhone 7s. We’ve been tending to use iPhone 8 as a shorthand reference to the 2017 iPhone, and a sketchy report today suggested that some of Apple’s employees may be using the name in the same way, but that’s by no means the only possibility.

Given that the rumored all-glass casing and full-screen face with embedded Home button would represent a pretty dramatic new look, it’s possible that Apple may want to celebrate that difference with a completely new naming strategy …

iPhone 7 camera climbs respected DxOMark review ranking, beating out tied iPhone 6/6s scores

Highly respected DxOMark has published its ultra detailed iPhone 7 camera review and the results are overwhelmingly positive across the board. iPhone 7 actually scores higher than the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s, which both tied with lower scores despite an improved camera on both models, which speaks to the advances Apple has made this year on the 4.7-inch iPhone even without the dual-sensor iPhone 7 Plus.

Sketchy report from Apple offices in Israel says 2017 phone is being referred to as the iPhone 8

While Apple’s naming convention would normally suggest that next year’s phone would be the iPhone 7s, all the rumors are pointing to a fairly radical redesign – with an all-glass casing and full-screen face with embedded Home button the main changes expected. For that reason, it seems virtually certain that Apple will break the convention.

Apple reportedly increasing iPhone 7 component orders heading into Q4 2016

AAPL stock has been on a tear recently, as investors were surprised by demand for the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Although the units may still sell less than the iPhone 6s, the gap appears to be far closer than expected. Before the devices went on sale, many business and financial analysts predicted iPhone sales would fall by about 10% year-over-year. Now, it seems that sales will be about the same.
