PSA: You’re going to have to buy a new screen protector for your iPhone 7/Plus
Apple opted to carryover the same general design from iPhone 6/s to iPhone 7/Plus, but a few key changes break forward compatibility for the majority of previous generation accessories. Clearly, the removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack was going to require fresh case designs for iPhone 7 (and we’ve got you covered in that department). On the other hand, despite the physical dimensions going unchanged, screen protectors for iPhone 6/s will (mostly) not fit iPhone 7. That means you won’t be able to transfer your old screen protector or pick up an older model on closeout to use with your shiny new iPhone.

Before Apple built its Home app for HomeKit in iOS 10, Matthias Hochgatterer created the best HomeKit app around with the original Home app. Apple’s Home app on iOS 10 is built-in, free, and has its own panel on Control, but the third-party Home app is still the best solution if you’re in deep with HomeKit like me. The iOS 10 version includes updated widgets, a new design, a refreshed Apple Watch app, and a temporarily discounted price to mark the launch.

Google releases iPhone version of Cardboard Camera app for taking VR photos
Comment: The W1 chip is a big deal, but I fear it will also be a missed opportunity
Of all the things that Apple announced during the iPhone 7 launch, the W1 chip actually impressed me most. I’d guessed that Apple would be including something like this, suggesting beforehand that the tech might solve three problems with Bluetooth audio.
First, fast and rock-solid pairing. First-time pairing should be quick and painless, and once headphones have been paired to a particular iPhone, they should instantly re-pair next time they are used. No more of the ‘will they or won’t they?’ question familiar to current-generation Bluetooth products.
Second, the connection too should be ultra-reliable. No random cutouts that interrupt the audio stream. Even half a second’s stuttering quickly becomes really annoying when listening to music.
Third, the power efficiency should be better than current low-energy Bluetooth, so charging headphones becomes a weekly thing for the average user, not something we have to do every few days.
Apple still hasn’t revealed much detail about the W1 chip, but it definitely addresses at least two out of the issues, and probably all three …

iPhone 7 Plus photos taken at Tennis US Open show off new camera abilities in Apple’s latest iPhone [Gallery]
Following a feature from Sports Illustrated earlier today which used the iPhone 7 Plus courtside at the NFL, ESPN has posted its own exclusive hands-on with the iPhone 7 Plus’ camera. They equipped professional photographer Landon Nordeman with an unreleased iPhone 7 Plus unit at the Tennis US Open. The results are stunning, showing off the new iPhone’s improved camera system.

Sensor on second iPhone 7 Plus camera is smaller than main one, calculations show
Apple hasn’t revealed the sizes of the camera sensors used in the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, but a Reddit user has used EXIF data from the Sports Illustrated photos to calculate them. They seemingly reveal that the main sensor is exactly the same size as the one in the iPhone 6s, while the sensor for the 2x telephoto lens is somewhat smaller …

Austria, France, Italy & the Netherlands could all be looking for a slice of the EU’s €13B tax claim
While Ireland may not want the €13B ($15B) the EU says Apple owes in underpaid tax, it seems other European countries do. Germany’s DW reports from a summit of European finance ministers that at least four countries have ‘expressed an interest’ in claiming their share.
Dutch Finance Minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem appeared to be first in line, warning Apple on Saturday to “get ready” to pay up. His comment came after a two-day meeting of his EU counterparts in the Slovak capital, Bratislava […]
Other EU countries, including Austria, Italy and France, are following the case closely, and expressing interest in a possible payout, according to Austria’s Finance Minister Hans Joerg Schelling, who spoke on the sidelines of the two-day summit.
There is already precedent for such claims …
