Apple Watch is almost completely sold out ahead of September 7 event
We noted last month that Apple Watch inventory was shrinking ahead of Apple’s expected fall event, and now it appears that almost all stainless steel Apple Watch models are sold out online and in limited supply in stores. Only one version of the steel Apple Watch is available to order online, and seven of the aluminum Apple Watch Sport models are sold out as well. This could mean a few things for Apple Watch 2 news at Apple’s September 7 ‘iPhone 7’ event.

Comment: Sony Bravia experience is another reason Apple was right to abandon television set plans
One of the longest-running rumors about Apple – that it was working on launching a fully fledged television – finally fizzled out last year, when a WSJ report said that the company had ultimately decided against the idea. Instead, Apple is aiming at a (delayed) subscription TV service, complete with original programming.
It was speculated at the time that there were two reasons for the decision. First, that Apple had been unable to come up with a compelling differentiator that would have given consumers a reason to buy an Apple television over the many rival products. Second, that there simply wasn’t enough money in the business – margins are slim, and replacement cycles are lengthy.
But a Sony Bravia issue reported this week has highlighted a third reason that an Apple television may have turned out to be a very bad idea …

After earlier doubts, Irish government is joining Apple in appealing EC tax ruling
Reuters reports that the Irish government has today agreed to join Apple in appealing the European Commission ruling that the country must recover €13B ($15B) in underpaid tax. While Apple quickly announced its own appeal, it was not certain that Ireland would do the same.
Finance Minister Michael Noonan has insisted Dublin would fight any adverse ruling ever since the European Union began investigating the U.S. tech giant’s Irish tax affairs in 2014, arguing that it had to protect a tax regime that has attracted large numbers of multinational employers. But at an earlier cabinet meeting on Wednesday he failed to persuade a group of independent lawmakers, whose support is vital for the minority government.
The cabinet agreed to meet again today to continue the debate, and will now be asking parliament to authorize the legal challenge …

China opens antitrust investigation into Apple-backed Didi Chuxing’s acquisition of Uber China
The WSJ reports that China has opened an antitrust investigation into the acquisition of Uber China by local rival Didi Chuxing. The deal went ahead a few months after Apple invested $1B in Didi Chuxing.

Five years in, dormant @Apple Twitter account looks set to start to start tweeting
An @apple Twitter account has existed for more than five years, but until today has been completely dormant, with blank profile and header images. That’s now changed: there’s an Apple logo for the profile image, and the iPhone 7 event graphic as the header. So far, though, no tweets.
It’s looking likely that Apple plans to start tweeting in time for next week’s launch of the iPhone 7, with some speculating that the company may live-tweet the event …

New OS X & Safari updates patch security exploit that allowed remote infiltration
Last week, Apple issued a surprise security fix for iOS that patched a vulnerability that allowed attackers to remotely gain control of a user’s device if they simply clicked a link. Now, Apple has issued the same security patch for users of OS X 10.11.16 El Capitan and 10.10.5 Yosemite.
