Purported 2018 iPad Pro CAD shows new location of Smart Connector

The iPad Pro is due for an upgrade, and all signs point to a major redesign this fall. The upcoming 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro, replacing the current 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch models, are expected to draw heavily from the iPhone X design. They will feature super-slimmed down bezels and drop the home button in favor of Face ID.

A report last week hinted that the smart connector would be redesigned and relocated. A CAD image from OnLeaks corroborates this finding. In the sketch, you can see a new outline on the back of the iPad. This is presumably the redesigned Smart Connector in its new spot on the rear of the device, horizontally aligned with the Lightning port on the short edge.

Comment: The rumor that the Face ID only works in vertical mode on the new iPads makes zero sense

A report on Friday claimed that the 2018 iPad Pro models made three claims about the new slim-bezel models we’re expecting to see. First, it said, Apple will drop the headphone socket. Second, it will move the Smart Connector to a short-edge rather than long edge. Third, that Face ID will work only when the iPad is in the vertical orientation.

I have absolutely no difficulty believing the first of these claims, but the other two make no sense to me …

AAPL earnings: the key commentary analysts are waiting to hear

Apple reports its fiscal Q3 (calendar Q2) earnings tomorrow, and we already know the key numbers analysts are expecting to hear in terms of iPhone sales and total revenue. The Wall Street consensus is that the company will report iPhone sales up 2.4% year-on-year, with earnings somewhere in the middle of Apple’s guidance.

But alongside those metrics, analysts will be paying close attention to lower-profile numbers, alongside Apple’s commentary, to see what clues it holds for the future …
