AI-powered Prisma photo editing app now works offline for most filters

Prisma first launched on iOS back in July, bringing AI-powered artistic photo filters to the iPhone. We were impressed with the quality and variety of filters, noting the server-side machine learning aspect that made these filters possible, but Prisma’s popularity was often too much for those servers and resulted in slow filter previews. Today Prisma seems to have solved that problem by making most of its filters available offline.

Comment: One-time codes are the Apple Pay secret weapon that’s just a little too secret

Much has been written about the convenience of Apple Pay, especially on an Apple Watch. Instead of reaching into your pocket or bag for your wallet, and extracting the card you want to use, you can simply double-click the side button on the Watch and hold out your wrist.

But there’s one aspect of Apple Pay that I’ve always felt fails to get the full attention it deserves: the fact that it never hands over your card details to retailers. Even on Apple’s own microsite, the feature is buried in a paragraph whose heading is about the use of fingerprints.

Yet the list of major chains who have seen customer card details compromised is virtually a Who’s Who of retailing and the hotel trade. Acer, Carphone WarehouseCVS Photo, Eddie BauerHiltonHome Depot, K-Mart, Marriott HotelsMichaels, Neiman Marcus, P.F. Chang’s, Staples, Starwood HotelsSuperValu, TargetTrump Hotels and Wendy’s. That’s even before we get into the Oracle hack that may have exposed almost every US credit card …

Pokémon Go fever breaking as app analytics show that usage is on the decline

If you’re one of the people who’ve been watching in bemusement as half the planet seemed to be devoting their lives to catching fictitious characters on their iPhones (even Siri getting in on the action), relief is at hand. New data from an investment company shows that Peak Pokémon Go appears to be behind us as four separate app metrics show the popularity of the game in decline.

Amazon reportedly set to do what Apple wasn’t able to (for non-students): launch a $5/mo streaming music service

Re/code reports that Amazon may be about to do something Apple tried hard to do but wasn’t able: launch a true streaming music service for $5/month (Apple was able to secure the $5/month pricing for students). There is, though, rather a big catch for Amazon: the service will only work on the company’s own Amazon Echo speaker.
