Apple gifting its flag-themed Watch bands to Olympic athletes in Rio while skirting official sponsorship

Apple isn’t an official Olympics sponsor, but it’s managed to still take advantage of the event for its own marketing purposes with limited-edition Apple Watch bands themed with country flag designs. Not only is it selling those watch bands for 14 different country flags to coincide with the Olympics this month, it’s also reportedly giving them away for free to athletes at its Apple Store in Rio (via iphone-ticker.de).

Opinion: If KGI report is accurate, what are Apple’s plans for the future of the iPad lineup?

A KGI report this morning made for intriguing reading. Two aspects of the report were unsurprising: a new version of the 12.9-inch iPad Pro next year, and a ‘radical’ new form factor in 2018, using OLED screen technology in a flexible display.

By next year, the largest model in the current iPad lineup will definitely be due a refresh, and with Apple expected to adopt OLED for the 2018 iPhone, possibly with some form of flexible display, you’d naturally expect the company to use the same tech in that year’s iPads.

But a third element sounded rather more surprising: a new 10.5-inch iPad next year, sitting alongside a new 9.7-inch model. As Benjamin noted this morning, that’s a size difference of just 0.8 inches between the two models, which on the face of it sounds rather odd. So what might be the explanation for this … ?

As more Space Black iPhone 7 photos emerge, which color do you plan to buy? [Poll]

We first started hearing whispers of a Space Black iPhone 7 in June, with claimed chassis and component leaks since then appearing to support the new darker model. New photos (above) emerged over the weekend – albeit low-quality ones, and from a source that has previously posted photos of likely mockups rather than the real thing.

But with a Space Black iPhone 7 seeming a likely bet, we thought it would be interesting to pull together a few of the renders we’ve seen so far and find out how popular an option the color is likely to be …

Comment: iPhone 7 camera bulge a big improvement on iPhone 6, but iPhone SE still leads the way

One of the observations I made in my first impressions piece on the iPhone SE was how pleased I was to lose the camera bulge of the iPhone 6/6s. It really seemed to me that, in the iPhone 6, Apple was prioritizing an inconsequential bit of extra slimness over a pleasing design.

Assuming all the iPhone 7 mockup images are accurate, then Apple has smoothed out the edges on the upcoming model. I do think this is a big improvement aesthetically, and less likely to snag when removing it from a pocket. But when you put it up against the iPhone SE, as TWE has done with a mockup the site purchased from China, it still seems to me that the SE shows how it should be done …

KGI: Apple to introduce three new iPads in 2017 including a 10.5 inch iPad Pro, new ‘flexible OLED’ iPad for 2018

Apple is going to shake up the iPad lineup in a big way in 2017, according to securities analyst KGI Ming-Chi Kuo. Next year, Apple will reportedly release three new iPads, a 12.9 inch iPad Pro 2, a low cost 9.7 inch iPad and — most interestingly — a new iPad Pro with a 10.5 inch display, a new screen size for Apple’s tablet range. With a diagonal increase of just 0.8 inches over the 9.7 inch iPad, its unclear at this stage what will justify the introduction of another SKU.

Perhaps, the device will stay the same physical shape but feature an edge-to-edge screen, enabling Apple to increase the screen size slightly. An edge-to-edge iPad display would mirror the rumored revolutionary glass redesign currently expected for iPhone 8, which would also debut next year. Further into the future, Kuo also reports that the iPad will follow the iPhone in adopting OLED technology screens starting in 2018 …

Apple CEO Tim Cook talks ahead of iPhone 7 launch about advice, AI/AR, and the future [Video]

The Washington Post this weekend published a very in-depth video/interview with Apple CEO Tim Cook just weeks before Apple is set to unveil its biggest product of the year by far, the iPhone 7. In it, Cook talks about the incredibly important people outside of Apple he turns to for advice at pivotal moments including Warren Buffett on returning cash to stockholders, Anderson Cooper on coming out, and folks like Bill Clinton and Laurene Powell Jobs on testifying before congress.

He also touches on the future of Apple including its Artificial Intelligence and and Augmented/Virtual Reality ambitions… more…
