Apple rehires former senior iOS engineer turned Flipboard co-founder for health software
As it continues to expand its health services for users, Apple has rehired Flipboard co-founder Evan Doll. According to Doll’s LinkedIn profile, he will work in the company’s health software department. Doll apparently rejoined Apple last month as a “director of health software engineering” (via Bloomberg).

Apple applies for patent on wearable ECG device as watch, ring, brooch or similar
Patently Apple reports that Apple has applied for a patent related to a wearable electrocardiographic (ECG) device that could take the form of a watch, ring, brooch or similar.
A wearable device can be affixed to a limb of the human body such as a wrist or ankle, as an example. The wearable device can be worn on the left or right wrist, or even on the right or left ankle.
The reason the patent application emphasizes use on either left or right side of the body is that the patent focuses on an issue that can arise when taking readings from only one side of the body …

Logitech introduces new ‘Pop Home Switch’ accessory for easily controlling smart home devices
Logitech has today taken the wraps off of a new accessory that it says will make smart home devices even easier to control. The company has introduced the Pop Home Switch, which allows users to set moods and control a variety of smart home products with the press of a button.

Om Malik on Apple’s upcoming Planet of the Apps: ‘Apple should be building better products, not stupid TV shows around those products”
On a recent episode of TWiT’s This Week in Tech, GigaOM founder, Om Malik, had some harsh words for Apple’s upcoming Planet of the Apps reality TV show, attributing it to what he sees as disturbing lack of focus for the Cupertino-based company. Malik didn’t mince words when it came to discussing Apple’s perceived lack of focus, its Hollywood connections, and entertainment aspirations.
“You were asking me what is the problem with Apple? Not the [rumored lack of a] lightning port — this kind of stupidity of building a TV show around apps. It’s like, what? Somebody needs to make friends in Hollywood and so we should do a show like this? This is just such nonsense. Apple to open World Trade Center retail location on August 16
Apple’s long-awaited retail location inside the World Trade Center now has an opening date. The company announced today that the store, its 10th in New York City, will open in less than a week on Tuesday, August 16th. On the store’s info page, Apple teases that it has “something special in store” for customers.

Apple details its ConnectED efforts, says it has provided over 32,000 devices to students
Apple has a storied history of being popular in classrooms around the world. The company today announced that its ConnectED efforts have helped the company reach more than 32,000 students throughout the United States. Most recently, Carver Elementary School in Indianola, Mississippi joined the ConnectED program, becoming the 66th school to which Apple has provided iPads.
