The Chinese company alleging patent infringement by Apple is essentially defunct – WSJ
Shenzhen Baili, the Chinese company that last week managed to win a Beijing patent office ruling that the iPhone 6 copied its own Baili 100C smartphone, is effectively defunct, reports the WSJ.
[Parent company] Digione had collapsed, brought down by buggy products, mismanagement and fierce competition, according to former employees and investors. Digione has been absent from China’s mobile-phone market for at least a year and Baidu has accused it of squandering its investment.

iOS 10 kernel is unencrypted – possible mistake, but likely to be deliberate
Security experts cited by MIT Technology Review have found that the kernel of the first developer preview of iOS 10 is unencrypted, allowing anyone to examine the code. All previous iOS kernels have been encrypted by Apple.
The heart of an operating system is a component known as the kernel, which controls how programs can use a device’s hardware and enforces security. Apple has previously encrypted the kernel in iOS releases, hiding its exact workings and forcing researchers to find ways around or through it. But the kernel was left unobfuscated in the preview version of iOS 10 released to developers last week for the most recent Apple devices.
As the piece notes, this doesn’t compromise the security of iOS 10, and there are both pros & cons to making it available for inspection. Security researchers are unsure whether the move was intentional or a mistake …

NASA app for Apple TV adds live streaming from ISS, on-demand video, 15k photos & more
Space fans with 4th-gen Apple TVs are in for a treat, as NASA has released its popular app on the platform. It was already available for iOS, Android and Fire OS, but this is the first time you’ve been able to access it directly on your Apple TV.
You get live streaming NASA TV, including a real-time view of the Earth from the International Space Station, as well as on-demand access to over 10,000 NASA videos and more than 15,000 photos, either individually or as a slideshow.

Mark Zuckerberg’s MacBook security advice? Put tape over the webcam and microphone
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is no stranger to elaborate security. It was reported earlier this year that Facebook has spent more than $16 million on security to protect the executive from “specific threats” from users and other sources. Meanwhile, Zuckerberg has also apparently hired 16 bodyguards to protect him at home. Now, Zuckerberg has inadvertently revealed another security measure he takes – and it’s surprisingly simple.

Apple Pay adds over 40 new banks and credit unions in the United States
Just two weeks after coming to over 30 new banks and credit unions, Apple Pay today has added an additional 44 new institutions in the United States. The new banks come a few days after Bank of America announced that it was rolling out support for ATM withdrawals using Apple Pay and come as Apple announced several new countries for the mobile payment service at WWDC.

Apple first introduced its mobile payments solution in 2014 and has been gradually expanding it both domestically and internationally since then, most recently announcing a handful of new features and countries at WWDC this month. A startup called Pearl Automations is today releasing a new accessory that adds a rearview backup camera to just about any car using an iPhone or other smartphone as a monitor. The company is notably made up of a large group of ex-Apple engineers and the accessory is just the first in a line of products it plans that will add various smartphone connectivity features to vehicles.
