You can now use MyCokeRewards with Apple Pay (and score a free Coke)

Last year Apple rebranded its Passbook app as Wallet and boosted Apple Pay by adding support for loyalty cards. Coca-Cola started accepting Apple Pay debit and credit cards at many of its vending machines around the same time, and now its loyalty card is catching up. Customers can add the MyCokeRewards loyalty card to Apple Pay and receive a free drink in return.

Apple Watch Diary: Apple Pay saved the day when I left my wallet at home

Going out without your wallet or purse is something most of us have done at some time or another. When I did it four or five years ago, it was a complete pain as it was on a Saturday afternoon and no banks were open.

Picture the scene: I’m on my own in the car, call into a gas station to refuel, get to the till and … no wallet. Not the most convenient of times to discover one’s absent-mindedness. Fortunately I have a great bank. I called them, and they gave me an authorization number to give to the gas station attendant, who was able to put the transaction through.

But when I managed to leave my wallet at home on Friday evening, Apple Pay made it a non-event …

Russell Index reweighting will see $1.3B of AAPL stock sold, depress share value – Credit Suisse

Credit Suisse has predicted that a change to an index designed to help fund managers hold the right balance of stock to meet their goals is likely to see a net sell-off of AAPL shares to the tune of $1.3B. This scale of sales is expected to be large enough to cause a fall in the share price, reports Reuters.

The index concerned is known as the Russell Index, which classifies stocks as some mix of ‘growth’ and ‘value’ depending on their performance. Growth stocks are expected to generate higher returns at greater risk, while value stocks are those likely to generate lower returns at less risk. Apple is being reclassified as 92% growth and 8% value …

New Indian ruling appears to finally give Apple go-ahead to open retail stores

Opening Apple Stores in India has been something of a challenge for the company. The law normally requires companies to manufacture at least 30% of their products within India before they can open a single-brand store under a Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) rule, but TNW is reporting that a decision to liberalize the FDI deal will finally provide the go-ahead for Apple Stores.

Apple will likely be allowed to avoid sourcing products locally for eight years – three years as per the new norms and an additional five years if it can prove it deals in ‘state-of-the-art’ and ‘cutting-edge’ technology that’s unavailable in the country.

If confirmed, the ruling will be an important one for Apple, which Tim Cook has described as the next China. An eight-year deal does, however, seem unlikely …

Boxee founder launches Public, a Talkshow-style ‘live broadcast chat’ app

Boxee founder Avner Ronen has launched Public, a chat app he described to Variety as ‘a third medium for broadcasting conversations’ after audio and video. The app appears similar to Talkshow in that a small group of people are able to participate in a text chat, but anyone can follow the conversation live …

Samsung mimics Apple’s ‘Shot on iPhone’ campaign with ‘Captured on Galaxy S7’

Samsung may think that running ads mocking Apple was the right thing to do, but it appears it isn’t above copying one of Apple’s most successful ad campaigns.

As CNET noticed, Samsung’s latest video ad – showing off the 4K video recording capabilities of its latest devices – is titled ‘Captured on Samsung Galaxy S7.’ Not quite as catchy as ‘Shot on iPhone,’ admittedly, but clearly inspired by the latter …

Jailbreak developer digs deeper in iOS 10 code, activates Dark Mode theme for Settings app

The same developer who found the original iOS 10 Dark Mode references in the Messages app, Andy Wiik, has found even more evidence that Apple was/is developing a black appearance for its iPhone and iPad operating system. The latest screenshots show the iOS 10 Simulator presenting the Settings app in a dark interface style, with black cell backgrounds and white text.

The screenshots are captured from the iOS 10 Simulator where it is easier to inject code and discover unfinished flags and behaviour, like this Dark Mode interface style …
