Comment: This electric-shock wearable is silly, but the underlying concept isn’t
A wristband that zaps you with a 255-volt electric shock if you over-spend is the latest idea from Intelligent Environments, a company that first announced the Pavlock wearable 18 months ago as a way to dissuade owners from visiting time-wasting websites.
The band would be triggered, explains the BBC, if your bank balance drops too quickly.
If the funds in the account go below an agreed limit, the band kicks in. It can also work with smart meter Nest to turn down the heating and save energy bills if funds are low.
Unsurprisingly, no bank has yet signed up for the service. But while the idea may be silly, it seems to me that the underlying concept here is exactly where the Internet of Things should be headed …

Yahoo brings its Esports competitive video game news app to iPhone
Yahoo is adding to its catalog of more than a dozen iOS apps by bringing its new Esports mobile app to iPhone. The Esports mobile app brings fans “coverage across their favorite competitive video games and events, coupled with a comprehensive product experience”, Yahoo says.
Esports focuses on various video game titles including “League of Legends,” “Dota 2,” “Counter-Strike: Global Offensive,” “Heroes of the Storm,” and “Street Fighter V”, and the iPhone app features capabilities like event reminders, live tournament stats, and viewing live and previously played matches.

Adobe launches free Spark web service, rebrands its iOS storytelling apps
Adobe has been steadily introducing free creative tools that let iPhone and iPad users tell stories through text, photos, and videos, and today that effort is coming to the web with the all-new Adobe Spark. Patent suggests future Apple Pencil may be destined to work with a Mac trackpad

If you’re wondering why your iPhone needs your passcode more often, this is why
Something that has been bugging me for some time is that my iPhone, normally unlocked with Touch ID, asks for my passcode way more often than it ought to. That mystery has now been solved by a bullet-point that Apple added to its iOS Security Guide earlier this month – though the behavior has been there a lot longer.
Previous versions of the document said that iOS devices should only ask Touch ID users for their passcode in one of five circumstances. I found I was frequently asked for my passcode when none of these applied, but a sixth, recently-added bullet-point explains it …

Apple opening new office in India to develop Apple Maps, creating up to 4000 jobs
In a press release, Apple has announced it is opening a new development office in Hyderabad, India. The team located here will apparently focus on improving Apple Maps, which is deeply integrated across Apple’s hardware and software as dedicated apps and embedded in other services, like Siri. The new center will create up to 4000 new jobs in the local economy. It is currently unclear as to the nature of the workforce, as Apple has preferred to keep its core software engineering team in California with most working solely in Cupertino.

Report: Apple considering Fifth Avenue retail expansion, but it doesn’t want to pay full price rent
According to a new report from the New York Post, Apple is looking to expand on its iconic Fifth Avenue retail location. While the company renovates the historic cube designed building, it will open in “some or all” of the 61,000-square foot FAO Schwarz space in the GM building. The report notes, however, that the temporary expansion could turn in to a permanent one seeing as how cramped the Fifth Avenue store has become.
