GoPro acquires Replay and Splice video apps to bolster mobile editing
GoPro has been having a rough time as its stock price has stumbled over the last few months. Its signature action camera is a niche product and competitors are releasing cheaper clones that replicate most of the same functionality. Now, GoPro has acquired two mobile video apps to offer a complete capture and editing solution for its users.

New York judge rules that the government can’t force Apple to unlock an iPhone
As Apple’s battle with the FBI drags on this week, a judge in New York has added a new wrinkle to the case. A magistrate judge in New York today has ruled that the government, using the All Writes Act, cannot force Apple to unlock an iPhone. This specific case this judge presides over is a drug trafficking investigation, which was mentioned last week as one of the more than a dozen other cases in which the government is asking Apple to help it obtain data from a locked iPhone.

Purported MasterCard roadmap indicates Apple Pay coming to Brazil, Japan, Hong Kong & more this year
Following reports that Apple Pay would be launching in France before the end of this year, it now looks like the service could be coming to a handful of other countries, as well. According to a MasterCard roadmap received by 9to5Mac from an anonymous unproven source, Apple Pay could potentially launch with support from at least MasterCard in Japan, Singapore, Brazil, and Hong Kong by the end of this year. The document also shows that Apple Pay in Canada could gain the support of MasterCard by the end of the year, as well. Currently Apple Pay in Canada is only supported on American Express cards.

New 9.7-inch iPad Pro may best 12.9-inch model with 12MP camera, 4K video
While Apple’s upcoming 9.7-inch iPad Pro will mostly match the 12.9-inch version in terms of functionality, there likely will be one key difference. Internal prototypes of the smaller model include a 12 megapixel rear camera comparable to the sensor in the iPhone 6s, according to sources. The 12.9-inch model that shipped this past November has an eight megapixel rear camera.

Apple vs FBI: Apple’s statement to Congress, Apple’s lawyer & Warren Buffet weigh in
Apple is set to officially make a statement before Congress tomorrow regarding its refusal to fulfill a judge’s request to help the FBI unlock a suspect’s iPhone in the high-profile San Bernardino attacks. Apple’s General Counsel Bruce Sewell, likely alongside other Apple employees, will deliver the prepared statement below at the hearing titled Balancing Americans’ Security and Privacy before addressing the panel and answering questions from Congress (via The Verge).
In the full statement (below), Apple echoed many of the past statements CEO Tim Cook and other representatives have given throughout the controversy, explaining that the FBI’s demands for a backdoor into iOS “would set a dangerous precedent for government intrusion on the privacy and safety of its citizens.”

Review: Honeywell Lyric Round Wi-Fi Thermostat matches HomeKit smarts with traditional style
If you’re looking to upgrade your home appliances and add Siri control, then HomeKit is a key feature you’ll want to look for when buying new hardware. The number of HomeKit-compatible smart thermostats is continuing to grow with Honeywell’s Lyric Round Wi-Fi Thermostat (2nd-gen) as the latest to hit the market.
Among competing thermostats, the basic premise is the same: Wi-Fi connectivity lets you remotely control heating and cooling from mobile apps, and intelligence using location and the Internet let you add some home automation. The pay off is potentially a lower energy bill and the cool factor of controlling the temperature with Siri.
Having recently reviewed the ecobee3 HomeKit thermostat as well, I’ll be using it as a comparison below to highlight what makes Honeywell’s Lyric Round smart thermostat different.

Square Cash introduces Cash Drawer to compete with Venmo and PayPal
Square Cash, Square’s app that allows users to send money to each other for free, saw a new update today that puts it more inline with competitors. With Cash Drawer, Square Cash now let’s users hold money within the app instead of transferring it immediately out to their own accounts. This behavior directly mimics functionality that Venmo and PayPal bolster.

Tim Cook could be jailed over refusal to cooperate with FBI (but almost certainly won’t be)
In an interesting summary of the possible outcomes of the Apple vs FBI standoff, Quartz notes that some experts believe that CEO Tim Cook could be held personally liable for defying a court order and face jail time.
Attorney Peter Fu told Fast Company that the scenario would arise only if the case went all the way to the Supreme Court and Apple lost but continued to refuse to cooperate.
Under these circumstances, there is a universe of possibilities where Tim Cook could actually go to jail for refusing to comply with a lawful order of the court. This is because Apple has already publicly declared that it will not comply with a court order to unlock the iPhone and as such, necessarily forces the courts to favor punishment over coercion …
