Vine comes to the Apple Watch with favorite videos and a complication

Twitter’s Vine today launched an application for the the Apple Watch, bringing the ability for Vine users to watch videos that interest them on their wrists. As noted in Vine’s announcement, the simplified Vine interface allows users to quickly watch videos from either the featured category or from their favorite Vine accounts. Of course, the application also allows users to like and Re-Vine clips from the Apple Watch. Notably, the application also includes a watch face complication so users who post videos to Vine can quickly measure their loops. In related news, Vine’s updated iPhone application now lets users more easily swipe between videos.

SwiftKey for iOS updated w/ new “Bubble Gum” keyboard theme, more

SwiftKey, the popular third-party keyboard app for iOS, has today been updated with a few changes and tweaks that users of the app will certainly welcome. First off, the update adds a new dynamic theme for the keyboard. Called “Bubble Gum,” this new keyboard design offers light blue keys with pink keys. Every time you tap on it, pick, blue, and yellow bubbles float behind the keyboard.

Bubble Gum is the second “dynamic theme” SwiftKey has introduced on iOS, following “Shooting Stars” earlier this year. “Bubble Gum” is available under the “Design” tab in the app for $1.99.

Danish man reports severe burns from Apple Watch following earlier, more minor reports

Danish news site Ekstra Bladet reports that a man received severe burns from his Apple Watch, and has been waiting for several weeks for the results of an Apple investigation. Photos accompanying the report (below, not for weak stomaches) seem to show two long burn marks on the wrist of Jørgen Mouritzen, together with what appear to be burn marks on the strap.

Mouritzen and a witness to the event say that they are both certain the heat came from the Watch itself and not from any external source … 

Apple’s PR agency in Denmark told Ekstra Bladet that it considers it a private matter with the individual concerned and would not therefore be commenting.

There have been sporadic earlier reports of burns from the Apple Watch, but these appear to have been much more minor – and are in many cases difficult to distinguish from simple skin irritation.

Apple has a support page in which it cautions that “a small number of people will experience reactions to certain materials.” It also advises that wearing the watch too tightly or loosely can cause rubbing. We’ve also reached out to Apple for a comment.

Pen guy gives thumbs-up to Apple Pencil for handwriting after rejecting all previous styli

We’ve seen the Apple Pencil being well received by high-profile artists even before launch, but I’ve so far seen little on what pen guys think of it. The Pen Addict filled in the gap with a review in which Myke Hurley said that it provided the digital handwriting experience he’d been waiting for.

Sure, I like to doodle and scribble as much as the next person, but all I wanted to know was if the Apple Pencil would give me the digital handwriting experience I had wanted for so long. TL;DR: It does … 

Hurley noted that pen guys consider weight and balance to be crucial, and Apple got it right here.

The Pencil is heavier than I imagined it would be. Brad and I constantly talk about how important weight and balance is in our writing instruments, and this has clearly been considered here. The Pencil is weighted fantastically. It feels great to hold; it feels substantial.

Hurley said that while it wasn’t quite perfect, it was better than anything else on the market.

Using the Apple Pencil in Notes is the closest I have ever come to getting a true handwriting experience from a digital device.

To say there is no lag would be incorrect, but it is close enough to feel that it works. When you move the Pencil across the screen, most lines will travel ever so slightly behind it. But compared to previous experiences of using a stylus on a iPad, the difference is like night and day.

And while he won’t be giving up real pens any time soon, he described himself as a convert.

After only having used it for a few days, I am now at the point where I wouldn’t want to go back. Being able to take quick notes or doodles whilst recording podcasts, having quick access to some sketching tools to mark up a document or screenshot, and having a new way to interact with iOS more precisely, has made the Pencil a must-have item in my toolkit […]

The work Apple has done to get the hardware and software in harmony to the point where this all works so flawlessly is astounding to me. The results I am able to achieve are just fantastic. I have always been a pen guy. But now I’m a Pencil guy too.

Apple projected to sell more iPad Pros in a single quarter than all MS Surfaces ever sold (w/$200 profit on each)

A week after KGI forecast that Apple would sell around 2.5M iPad Pros this quarter (down from far bigger numbers before launch), RBC Capital Markets has predicted a more conservative 1M per month, suggesting around 1.7M units this quarter.

The company has also estimated that Apple’s average profit per unit is around $200.

Whoever is right, Business Insider notes that even the more cautious forecast puts the iPad Pro on-track to exceed total sales of the Microsoft Surface tablet range within its first three months.

Much may of course depend on the extent to which consumer sales supplement those of its primary corporate market. I was surprised to find that I did see a consumer market for it despite my own decision not to keep it. And while we may be waiting a while for pro apps, there’s a lot you can do today to make the most of it.

New York promotes mobile app to report suspicious activity in ‘See Something, Say Something’ campaign

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo yesterday announced that the state is supporting a mobile app allowing people to report suspicious activity, reports the NY Daily News. The See Send app, available on both iOS and Android, allows users to send either a text note or a photo.

The app […] will allow people to send a photo or written note to the state police Intelligence Center, where its credibility can be examined and referred to the proper law enforcement agency if necessary. [It] should be used to report suspicious behavior or specific situations like an unattended backpack in a public place, not simply hunches.

The app is already supported by Pennsylvania, Ohio, Louisiana, Colorado and Virginia.

State Police Superintendent Joseph D’Amico likened the app to a telephone crime tip line, with police hoping that making it easier to pass on tips will make it more likely that people will use it.

“If you see something that may be linked to terrorism, send something,” D’Amico said. “Your tip could provide valuable information that could prevent a tragedy.”

Some Pebble smartwatch owners can now reply to text messages on the watch – but there are catches

Pebble smartwatches just got a little smarter, allowing some iPhone owners to reply to text messages directly on the watch – something that has so far been possible only on the Apple Watch.

Pebble is excited to introduce Text Reply for iOS, a beta feature making us the first non-Apple smartwatch to bring voice and text replies to our iPhone users […]

After setting things up, users can respond with a voice reply or pre-defined text to incoming items from the iOS Messages app.

There are, though, a few disclaimers … 

First, the new Text Reply for iOS feature is limited to the more recent models: the Pebble Time, Time Steel and Time Round. Second, it’s initially limited to AT&T, and there only to post-paid accounts. Third, it uses a carrier-specific workaround, so you won’t see your replies in the thread in the Messages app on your iPhone.

But if you’re one of the lucky ones, you’ll find the instructions below. If not, Pebble says it is working with other carriers to bring the feature to more iPhone users.

  1. Update your Pebble Time iPhone app to version 3.4 or higher.
  2. After updating the iPhone app, update your Pebble Time’s firmware to version 3.7 or higher. Select Menu » Support » Update Your Pebble if you aren’t prompted automatically.
  3. From the iOS app, navigate to Menu » Settings » Actionable Notifications to set up Text Replies for the first time.
  4. Follow the setup instructions.
  5. After successful setup, notifications received from the Messages app will have the option to reply with voice or a list of pre-defined responses.

Report: Apple to launch Apple Pay in China by February of 2016

Back in September, Apple created a company in the Shanghai free-trade zone, hinting at its plans to launch its mobile payment solution Apple Pay in the country. Now, Dow Jones reports that Apple plans to launch Apple Pay in China by February.

The potential for Apple Pay in China is huge. China is already a bigger market than Europe for Apple and will soon overtake the United States in size. Currently, mobile payment is dominated by Alipay in China, the service created by Alibaba.

In the past, it has been reported that Apple has been in talks with Alibaba regarding a potential partnership to help facilitate a faster rollout in the country. At this point, Apple does not appear to have regulatory approval to launch in China, but Tim Cook has commented that he “Tim Cook confirmed” wants to launch the platform in the country and is “very bullish” on its prospects there.

Most recently, Apple Pay has expanded to the U.K., Canada, and Australia following its initial launch in the United States.
