Apple announces Apple TV-focused Tech Talks for developers across 10 cities around the world

apple-tv

Apple typically holds a single developer event each year, WWDC in San Francisco around June, but sometimes uses Tech Talks to bring developer events around the world at other parts of the year. With Apple TV’s App Store launching several months after WWDC 2015 and long before WWDC 2016, Apple has announced that it will host 11 Tech Talk sessions across 10 different cities around the world.

Registered developers can request to attend one of the upcoming Tech Talks with the registration deadline set for this Friday, November 13th at 10 am PT. The first Tech Talk kicks off in Toronto next month on December 7th while the last one happens in Sydney on February 3rd, 2016. Each Tech Talk runs the span of one day and venues for each have yet to be announced. Apple last held Tech Talk sessions for developers shortly after iOS 7 in 2013.

tvos-hero_2x

One week after the first tvOS 9.1 beta for Apple TV, developers now have access to an updated build of the software update to test. While the initial tvOS 9.1 beta contained no visual changes for users yet, Siri has since been enabled to work with Apple Music on the beta version of the software. Non-developer Apple TV users also recently saw the very first software update for Apple TV yesterday with the release of tvOS 9.0.1, which likely focused on stability and bug fixes as no visual changes were discovered. tvOS 9.1 beta 2 for developers and available to download from Apple’s developer center.

The new Apple TV, launched at the end of last month, delivers the very first App Store for the device as well as Siri support and Apple Music included. Several features from Apple TV 3rd-gen haven’t made it to Apple TV 4th-gen, however, including Bluetooth keyboard support and compatibility with Apple’s Remote app for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. apple-retina-macbook-mjlq2lla (1)

Software developers have been given access to a new OS X 10.11.2 build in preparation for the update’s public release. This is the third beta of the 10.11.2 update that has been published.

The first two software betas didn’t bring any notable user-facing changes to the desktop OS, but Apple encourages developers to continue testing in areas like Wi-Fi connectivity, graphics capabilities, and built-in apps like Mail and Notes.

The new beta is available through the Updates tab of the Mac App Store for users already on the developer release channel, and through Apple’s developer website for those who are on a retail build.

apple-music

After first being announced and previewed in screenshots at WWDC in June, Apple has officially brought its subscription music service Apple Music to Google’s Android platform. Apple Music joins the iPhone maker’s other Android apps Move to iOS and the Beats Pill+ companion app on the Google Play Store.

Apple Music offers access to a large catalog of streaming music and music recommendations. Music and music videos can be saved for offline listening as well. Memberships costs $9.99/month for individuals, the same as Beats Music subscriptions which Apple Music replaces, after a three-month free trial period. Apple Music family plans for up to five different accounts is available through Family Sharing on iOS and Mac for $14.99/month.

Apple Music for Android is on the Google Play Store now:

Introducing the beta of Apple Music on Android.
Notes about the beta period:
• Music videos are coming soon.
• Sign-ups and upgrades to Family memberships require Mac or iOS.
• Sign-up process to be optimized for Android.
Apple Music on Android also means iTunes music purchases can be easily accessed from Google’s platform.

Beats Music subscribers will need to move from the old app to the new Apple Music app to continue using the service. Libraries and playlists can be transferred over. While Beats Music has also been available on Windows Phone, a version of Apple Music on Microsoft’s mobile platform will not be available.

As for the Apple Music business, Android adds one more access point for subscribers. In October, Apple CEO Tim Cook shared that Apple had 6.5 million paying Apple Music customers with 15 million in total including free trial customers.

Apple’s music subscription service is now available on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple Watch, Apple TV 4, Mac, PC, and Android. For comparison, Beats Music which Apple Music is based on and replaces was available on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Android, Windows Phone, and the web.

How Android users handle Apple Music app reviews on the Play Store will be interesting to watch. Beats Music for Android enjoyed a 4-star rating after launching on the platform months before Apple acquired it. Move to iOS and the Beats Pill+ companion app, in comparison, each carry a low 2-star rating.

Apple Music for Android is out now on the Google Play Store.

SwiftKey updated with complete set of new emoji for iOS 9.1

swiftkey emoji

The popular SwiftKey keyboard for iOS has been updated today with support for all of iOS 9.1’s new emoji icons. Included in the new version are such favorites as the 🦄 unicorn, 🌭 hot dog, 🖖🏻Vulcan salute, and new expressions like the 🤔 thinking face, the 🙄 eye roll face, and (my personal favorite) the 🙃 upside down smiley face.

All of the new emojis work with the existing SwiftKey features, like Emoji Insights, which provides fun statistics about your emoji usage, like which one you overuse more than other people and which US state best matches your emoji usage.

SwiftKey is free on the App Store.

KGI: Apple unlikely to add AMOLED screens to iPhone as Foxconn builds out new LCD factory

Rose Gold iPhone 6s Plus Apple Watch

In a research note, reliable supply chain analyst KGI’s Ming-Chi Kuo is suggesting that Apple is unlikely to bring AMOLED screens to the iPhone for many years to come, through 2018 at least, and almost certainly not coming to the iPhone 7.

OLED iPhones have been a long-running rumor but Apple has remained steadfast with investments in better LCD panels for the most part. Yield for OLED panels continues to be a big issue given the incredible scale Apple requires for iPhone shipments.

Apple started using AMOLED in its product line this year with the Apple Watch, which takes full advantage of the deep blacks OLED screens can create in its user interface, blurring the line between bezel and screen wherever possible. In an interview earlier this year, Jony Ive called the iPhone screen (which cannot reproduce such an effect as LCD contrast levels are not as good) as ‘old’.

Regardless, The KGI note says that Foxconn is investing in a new $4bn LTPS TFT-LCD plant for iPhone screens, a further indication that Apple is not looking to change screen technology anytime soon. The plant is scheduled for mass production in 2018. Although Apple could change course over three years, the current outlook is definitely against AMOLED. Certainly, don’t bet on the iPhone 7 featuring an AMOLED display.

Sonos debuts new Trueplay speaker tuning feature with latest Controller iOS app

Trueplay Sonos

Back in September, Sonos unveiled an impressive new feature for its wireless speakers called Trueplay. Using the built-in microphones on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, this Sonos feature lets you fine tune your speaker to the room it’s in while optimizing the sound regardless of placement. Starting today, Sonos users can use try out Trueplay using the latest version of the controller app for iOS.

Trueplay setup is super simple too. Because Trueplay tunes your Sonos speaker to the room and its surroundings, it does require setting up any time you relocate your hardware. But the process takes just a couple minutes and only requires that you pace around the room waving your iOS device up and down enough to catch the audio wave sent from your speaker.

One of the best parts of Trueplay is that it can improve the sound of existing Sonos speakers. Trueplay works through the latest version of the Sonos controller app to fine tune the original and upcoming PLAY:5, and all PLAY:1 and PLAY:3 Sonos speakers. Once you setup Trueplay, you can easily adjust the equalization settings to fit your preferences.

To get started, grab the new Sonos Controller 6.0 for iOS from the App Store, then update your Sonos speakers before taking advantage of Trueplay.

Early iOS 10 and OS X 10.12 ‘Fuji’ internal testing ramps up ahead of 2016 launches

ios10

A few months following the launches of both iOS 9 and OS X 10.11 El Capitan, Apple has shifted a large portion of its software engineering resources over to development of the upcoming iOS 10 and OS X 10.12. While iOS 9.2 and OS X 10.11.2 remain under development, 2016’s mobile and desktop Apple operating systems are now moving forward at full speed, sources indicate.

osx

As indicated by checks of our own Google Analytics data, testing of both 2016 Apple operating systems has picked up significantly in recent weeks, after a slow start between September and October. Sources indicate that the internal codename of the new Mac operating system is “Fuji,” which follows last year’s “Gala” release. Stay tuned for details in the future about both of the new operating systems.
