Comment: Microsoft’s new Surface Go will put only the smallest of dents in iPad sales

Microsoft may be positioning its new $399 Surface Go tablet as a competitor to Apple’s $329 iPad, but I don’t think Apple need be particularly concerned.
On the, ah, surface, the Go looks like a good deal. For $70 more than the base-model iPad, you get something presenting itself as a full PC, running desktop apps rather than mobile ones. You can also add a $99 or $129 keyboard to turn it into a laptop, an option Apple reserves for the much more expensive iPad Pro.
Microsoft’s keyboards also include a trackpad, with the additional option of a $35 mouse …

Supply-chain report explains how this year’s LCD iPhone could be near-bezel-free

All three of this year’s iPhones are expected to have the near-bezel-free design of the iPhone X, despite the fact that the cheapest one will have an LCD screen.
It’s so far been unclear how slim the bottom bezel could be when using an LCD screen instead of an OLED one, but a supply-chain report today may have the answer …
Law enforcement may be able to work around iOS 11.4.1 Lightning port restrictions … using a dongle

iOS 11.4.1 (and iOS 12) include new line of defence against a type of security hack aimed at brute-forcing access to iPhones and iPads. The Grayshift boxes plug into the Lightning port and remove prolonged delays between PIN code attempts, allowing law enforcement (or criminals) to brute-force an unlock.
The new USB Restricted Mode in iOS 11.4.1 simply prevents any USB accessories from connecting if the phone has not been unlocked in the last hour. As it typically takes more than a hour to get a warrant for police to be allowed to use a Grayshift box, this is quite a significant roadblock. However, ElcomSoft note that the behaviour can be worked around in some cases …
Microsoft launches cheaper ‘Surface Go’ iPad competitor with a 10-inch display

Today Microsoft officially took the wraps off the next product in its Surface lineup, a budget-minded tablet called Surface Go. The Surface Go is a 10-inch tablet that starts at a pocket-friendly $399, but you’ll need to pony up more cash for more storage and memory.
Lighter and smaller than the Surface Pro, the Surface Go features dimensions of 9.6-by-6.9-by-0.3 inches and weighs just 1.2 pounds. The 10-inch 3:2 1800-by-1200 PixelSense Display dominates the front side of the device, but substantial bezels remain on each side of the display.
Preorders are available starting today, with shipments scheduled to begin in early August. more…

Mac: How to set default web browser

Safari is the best browser if you live within the Apple ecosystem. All your tabs sync across all devices, you can pick up where you left off on other devices with Hand Off, among other things.
However, every user is different and sometimes you’ll want to choose a different web browser for various reasons. Follow along to learn how to do so on your Mac.
Mac: How to set default web browser
- Fire up System Preferences, and then click on General.
- You’ll then see a selection box to choose your default web browser. By default, this will be Safari, but if you have other browsers you’d like to pick, simply tap on the box, and choose your browser of choice. Now, when you tap a link in Mail, Messages, Notes, or wherever else, it will now open in said browser versus Safari.
