Latest report suggests LG will supply 3-5M OLED screens for this year’s iPhones

The latest report on Apple’s efforts to secure a second supplier of OLED screens for this year’s iPhones suggests that it may give 3-5 million orders to LG. This is a little higher than the 2-4M suggested in an earlier Bloomberg report.
The reported order is part of Apple’s long-running efforts to reduce its dependence on Samsung …

Comment: I understand why Apple wanted its own maps, but it fails the laser focus test

A Counterpoint blog post today questions whether the planned ‘massive overhaul’ of Apple Maps is too little, too late.
This brings me to my key point — that map making, map data collection and keeping maps up-to-date, is an expensive and unending task […]
Apple will have to pour in hundreds of millions of dollars every year to collect, parse and integrate maps, transit and traffic data. Further, having Apple Maps cars equipped with expensive LiDAR, 360 cameras gear and drive hundreds of thousands of miles globally will still take Apple years to perfect the maps at a global scale […]
In summary, it could be a little too late for Apple to build maps content from the ground-up.
For a company which boasts of saying no a thousand times for every time it says yes, Apple Maps always seemed like a strange project to green-light, but I think there were a couple of reasons for it …
Apple dropping Intel as radio chip supplier, killing off the product – report

A new report claims Apple has notified Intel that it will not use the chipmaker’s radio chips in its 2020 iPhones. It goes on to say that as Apple was the primary customer for the combined 5G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip, Intel has now halted development of the product and disbanded the team working on it …
Kuo: New 2018 iPhone models to come in gold, grey, white, blue, red and orange colors

Ming-Chi Kuo released a report today that ups their estimates for the new 2018 iPhone sales, as well as detailing a few changes to expect. Kuo says that the 6.5-inch OLED iPhone model should be priced around $1000 like the current iPhone X, and will feature dual SIM capabilities. The 6.1-inch LCD iPhone X style device should retail for around $700.
Perhaps, most excitingly, Kuo says the new iPhones will come in a plethora of colors. The 6.5-inch phone will be offered in black, white and (new!) gold. The entry-level 6.1-inch LCD iPhone will apparently debut in ‘grey, white, blue, red and orange’.
Apple registers five new iPads and Macs in Eurasian database

We are expecting significant updates to the iPad and Mac lines later this year, and Apple appears to be getting in the admin work early as five new iPad and five new Mac models have turned up in the Eurasian Economic Commission database as found by Consomac.
The filing says that these new devices are running iOS 11 and macOS 10.13, which is unusual as we’d typically expect Apple to ship these hardware updates with the new flagship software releases, iOS 12 and macOS Mojave. Indicators from this source had a solid track record of accuracy last year, but it’s notable that an April filing on new iPhones is yet to see payoff in new products.
