This week’s best iTunes movie deals: various Disney films $15, 4K from $5, $1 rental, more

iTunes has refreshed its movie storefront this morning with a fresh selection of deals. Leading the way is a selection of Disney movies for $15. Regularly selling for $20, today’s offer is 25% off and a return to all-time low prices at iTunes in many instances. We’ve also spotted the usual smattering of deals from $5 and this week’s $1 HD rental. You’ll find all the deals below.

Comment: The Touch Bar hasn’t really taken off, perhaps it should be optional?

CNET has a piece today listing five things it thinks Apple needs to do with the Mac line-up this year. Alongside sorting out the butterfly keyboard issues, allowing a sneak-peek at the Mac Pro, updating the MacBook Air and offering one non-USB-C port on MacBooks, Dan Ackerman asks for … one more thing.

Make the Touch Bar truly optional. It’s not a universally adopted control interface, and plenty of Mac users either don’t care for it or don’t feel they need it.

The least expensive 13-inch MacBook Pro without the Touch Bar is a full $500 less than the least expensive 13-inch MacBook Pro with the Touch Bar (yes, there are CPU and storage differences as well). The 15-inch MacBook Pro, however, is only available with the Touch Bar. I’d wager that many potential shoppers would jump at a chance to shave a few hundred dollars off a 15-inch Pro that skipped the high-concept Touch Bar …

iPhone rumored to adopt USB-C ports next year, 2018 iPhone bundles USB-C charge cables

Apple is expected to transition its iOS devices to USB-C connectivity later this year, by shipping a Lightning -> USB-C cable and a new 18W charger, previously rendered here. This will move new iPhone buyers over to using USB-C for charging with a cable. It will also mean that customers can take advantage of Type-C fast charging without needing to buy additional accessories.

Next year, Digitimes reports that Apple will add USB-C ports to the iPhone itself. This would be a major shift for the product line and would presumably be the beginning of the end for Apple’s proprietary Lightning connector.

Apple now explicitly bans background cryptocurrency mining in apps

Back in March, app developer Qbix thought it had hit on a great new way to make money from its Calendar 2 app for the Mac. Instead of charging users, or including intrusive ads, it offered users access to pro features in return for allowing cryptocurrency mining in the background.

Apple quickly put a stop to that, and has now updated its app guidelines to explicitly ban background currency mining …
