Comment: As app-based ‘Open Banking’ hits UK, USA is likely follow suit
One of the biggest shake-ups to the way that consumers manage their finances launched in the UK this weekend. Known as Open Banking, it means that you’ll no longer be limited to using whatever apps your bank chooses to make available, but can instead manage your accounts from a wide variety of third-party apps.
It’s been possible for some time to use third-party apps to analyse your spending, and even perform some financial transactions, but right now in the USA, anything with access to your accounts relies on partnerships agreed by your bank. You can use the apps your bank wants you to, but not others. For example, Chase partners with Intuit and Wells Fargo with Xero and Finicity, but the choice of app is up to your bank, rather than you.
That’s what Open Banking changes …

The first new product Steve Jobs announced after taking the stage for the Macworld 2008 keynote was Time Capsule, a router and wireless backup solution designed to work with Time Machine, Apple’s then new backup software. Jobs would talk about another kind of time machine before the keynote was over: the MacBook Air.

Digitimes reports no major MacBook Pro update expected in 2018
Digitimes today reports that Apple is reallocating MacBook Pro orders from Quanta to Foxconn in order to lower costs and reduce risks. The company is willing to shift production this year reportedly because Apple does not have a major hardware update for MacBook Pro in the pipeline for this year.
This means that supply of 2017 MacBook Pro will remain strong even if Foxconn encounters yield and quality control problems whilst it ramps up. Apple first launched the modern MacBook Pro design in 2016.
iPhone 7 Plus was 2nd best-selling phone in China in 2017, Apple only foreign brand in top 10
A new research note from Counterpoint shows that whilst Apple’s dominance in China is not as high as its peak, it is the only foreign smartphone brand that matters in the region. iPhone 7 Plus was the no.2 best selling handset across all of 2017, and the smaller iPhone 7 took fifth place (via CNBC).
China’s propensity towards larger-screened phones is shown by the Plus’ popularity compared to the regular iPhone 7. Apple was the only foreign brand to feature in the top 10 phone models, with 5.2% total marketshare from both iPhone 7 models.
