Tim Cook says self-driving car tech ‘incredibly exciting,’ Apple may or may not make a car
Tim Cook has been a little more open than usual about the open secret that Apple is working on autonomous driving technology, describing it as an ‘incredibly exciting’ field. He did so in an interview with Bloomberg TV that apparently took place on June 5 but was published today.
Cook had previously avoided the question altogether, said vaguely that Apple was ‘exploring’ cars or told people to wait and see what the company had planned. He did, though, express more enthusiasm in this brief interview …
Apple granted patent for Touch ID sensor in power button as uncertainty remains over iPhone 8 approach
A series of apparent iPhone 8 leaks still haven’t answered one of the biggest questions about this year’s flagship iPhone: will the fingerprint sensor be embedded into the display?
We know that Apple has numerous patents for this type of embedded fingerprint technology, and it also appears clear that the display will occupy almost the entire front face of the device, but some claimed leaks do show a fingerprint sensor on the back of the case. I’ve discussed a third option, where a Touch Bar element appears to be part of the display, and a patent published today raises a fourth possibility …

How to move multiple iPhone Home screen apps icons on iOS 11 using drag and drop [Video]
Earlier today, developer Steve Troughton-Smith posted a well-received tweet showcasing drag and drop functionality that’s present, yet currently disabled, in iOS 11 for the iPhone. Whether or not Apple will eventually enable such functionality for iPhone users is anyone’s guess, but I think the majority of us would welcome the addition with open arms.
That said, there is one drag and drop feature that all iOS 11 beta iPhone users already have. It’s now possible to manipulate Home screen app icons using drag and drop, allowing users to move multiple icons at once. Why use such a feature? It makes organizing iOS apps directly from the iPhone’s Home screen significantly faster. more…
Here’s the first trailer for the new South Park Phone Destroyer iOS game
South Park is getting its very first proper iOS game sometime this year. It appears to follow a similar format as the console releases with a turn-based battle system and cut-scenes that look/sound like they could be lifted right from an episode. Details are light so far but South Park Phone Destroyer will hit the App Store sometime in 2017.
Apple begins rolling out Swift Playgrounds 2 beta to developers
Apple has started sending developers access to the first beta version of Swift Playgrounds 2. The company originally announced the update at WWDC, but only opened TestFlight signups rather than releasing the first build. This evening, however, developers have started receiving Swift Playgrounds 2.
Developer uncovers drag and drop support for iPhone in iOS 11
One of the standout features in iOS 11 is support for drag and drop, which allows iPad users to easily move things such as links and images between applications. Though, the feature is limited to iPad users as Apple works to make the device more of a PC replacement.
Developer Steven Troughton-Smith, however, has discovered how to enable inter-application drag and drop on iPhone…
Top 10 QR codes supported by iOS 11
During Apple’s keynote at this year’s WWDC 2017, Craig Federighi announced iOS 11 support for the oft-forgotten quick response (QR) codes. While users stateside may not use QR codes regularly, for many in China it has become somewhat of a norm.
Onstage, Federighi announced the QR support as part of “some features of special interest to our customers in China.” Coming in iOS 11, the native camera will have built-in support for QR codes. No longer needing third-party apps to scan them, QR code adoption may see a bump in usage over the coming years.
Native support for QR codes in iOS 11 will open the doors for some interesting mobile interactions. With official support for HomeKit and some third-party app flexibility in iOS, let’s take a look at which QR code types are compatible with Apple’s upcoming iOS.
