U.S. iPhone factory idea thrown into doubt by remarks made by Foxconn chairman
The idea that Foxconn might establish an iPhone assembly factory in the United States – something which had already seemed unlikely – has been thrown into further doubt by remarks made by the company’s chairman.
Apple reportedly asked both Foxconn and Pegatron to look into the possibility of bringing iPhone assembly into the U.S. following threats by President Trump to impose hefty import tariffs on products imported from China. Pegatron reportedly refused outright, while Foxconn agreed to investigate the idea.
But comments made by Foxconn chairman Terry Gou today suggest there is little prospect of this happening …

Apple engineers working to address remaining CIA exploits, but two factors hampering efforts
The WSJ reports that Apple engineers are working to address the remaining iOS exploits reportedly used by the CIA, but they and other tech companies are being hampered by the two factors. The first is lack of any access to the code itself.

Companies now find themselves in a difficult position: They believe that at least two organizations have access to hacking code that exploits their products — the CIA and WikiLeaks — but neither one is sharing this software …

Renault has announced that many of its new cars will offer CarPlay compatibility from April.
R-LINK 2, available in Megane, Scenic, Talisman, etc will be compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The announcement is a little vague – including that ‘etc’ in the quote above – but appears to indicate that CarPlay support will not be available in either the Clio or Captur …

‘There is no such thing as absolute privacy in America,’ says FBI Director James Comey
FBI Director James Comey – who has previously attacked Apple for refusing to create a weak version of iOS to allow government access to iPhones – has said that Americans have no right to expect absolute privacy. CNN has a video clip of Comey making the statement yesterday at a Boston College conference on cybersecurity.
Even our communications with our spouses, with our clergy members, with our attorneys are not absolutely private in America […] There is no such thing as absolute privacy in America; there is no place outside of judicial reach …

Apple speech team head explains how Siri learns a new language
One area where Apple is the undisputed king of the personal assistant space is localization; Siri supports twenty four languages across 36 country dialects. In contrast, Google’s Assistant can only understand five languages and Alexa (popularized by the Amazon Echo) just two, English and German.
iOS 10.3 is introducing another language, Shanghainese, extending its international advantage even more. In an interview with Reuters, Apple’s head of speech explains how Siri is taught to learn a whole new language …

Conan pokes fun at congressman’s iPhone/healthcare argument with mock ‘Apple Healthcare’ ad [Video]
Yesterday we told you about Jason Chaffetz, a Republican Congressman who thought that the reason some low-income Americans couldn’t afford healthcare was because of the iPhone:
“You know what, Americans have choices. And they’ve got to make a choice,” the House Oversight Committee chairman told CNN’s ‘New Day,’ one day after the House GOP unveiled its plan to replace ObamaCare.
“And so maybe, rather than getting that new iPhone that they just love and they want to spend hundreds of dollars on, maybe they should invest in their own healthcare.”
Now, the folks at the Conan O’Brien show are poking fun at the notion with a mock advertisement for “Apple Healthcare.”
