LG fixes WiFi interference problems with UltraFine USB-C 5K display, new units unaffected

Earlier in the week, we reported that the LG UltraFine 5K display can be effectively unusable if placed near a WiFi router with some kind of radio interference causing the monitor to regularly black out and hang the connected MacBook Pro.

LG has now said that it has identified the issue as a hardware problem and that all new units made after February will be unaffected by proximity to home routers. Existing owners of the UltraFine display, recommended by Apple as the best companion to the 2016 MacBook Pro, will need servicing to add ‘enhanced shielding’ (via Recode).

Class action lawsuit claims Apple intentionally broke FaceTime on iOS 6 to push users towards iOS 7

Apple has been hit with another class action lawsuit in California. This one alleges that the company forced users to upgrade to iOS 7 by essentially breaking FaceTime in iOS 6. The move to render FaceTime useless in iOS 6, according to the lawsuit, was primarily driven by Apple wanting to avoid paying increasingly high data costs to Akamai.

Today’s suit alleges, however, that the forced upgrade to use FaceTime rendered older devices like iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S unusable.

If you could add one port back to the new MacBook Pro, what would it be?

Feature Request: Apple should roll its own VPN into iOS like Google and aim for better App Store moderation

When Apple released iOS 10 last September, they pushed in a small change when connecting to wireless networks. Tucked away under the Wi-Fi settings, iOS now warns users when connecting to insecure networks that it exposes a user’s network traffic. The easy answer to this is to simply not connect to public wireless networks, but that’s something that most people will just ignore. If users won’t stop connecting to insecure public networks, they could at least start using VPNs and Apple could make it easy to do that.

When Apple refused to compromise iOS security last year and unlock the iPhone 5c belonging to the San Bernardino shooter, the FBI turned to an Israeli mobile forensics firm called Cellebrite to find a way in to the encrypted iPhone. Now Motherboard reports that a hacker has released files allegedly from Cellebrite that demonstrate how cracking tools can’t be kept private.
