Apple started offering water resistance in its smartphones along with the iPhone 7/7 Plus and iPhone X continues the trend with the same IP67 dust/water resistance. However, over the weekend a diver discovered the extremes the iPhone X can potentially withstand.

HomeKit Weekly is a series focused on smart home accessories, automation tips and tricks, and everything to do with Apple’s smart home framework. 

Fresh off of WWDC 2018, this week we’re looking at HomeKit’s debut on the Mac through macOS Mojave. Coming later this fall, macOS 10.14 includes a version of Apple’s Home app for smart accessory control. Siri on the Mac also learns how to control HomeKit with voice commands.

While not as major, Apple is today releasing the second developer builds for iOS 11.4.1 and tvOS 11.4.1. Being a bug fix update to the earlier release, we aren’t expecting any new user facing features.

Apple last week pulled the first watchOS 5 beta due to it bricking certain Apple Watch models. Today, Apple has re-issued the first beta that will hopefully resolve any bricking issues.

“What did you think of the keynote?” was the default greeting last week in San Jose. This year’s WWDC was the second to return to the McEnery Center, and the first I had the opportunity to be in town for. I’ve spent the last few days collecting my thoughts on the week’s events, and more than any new software feature, what stood out to me was the welcoming and enthusiastic Apple community around WWDC.

The long-running patent dispute between Apple and wireless chip supplier Qualcomm didn’t look likely to end anytime soon, with more than 50 separate proceedings filed across 16 jurisdictions in six different countries. Apple accuses Qualcomm of unfair terms for the use of its chips and patent licenses, while Qualcomm accuses Apple of infringing those patents.
