You can now install popular automatic screen brightness app Flux on iPhone and iPad

IMG_0015

With iOS 9, it is now possible to install screen brightness app Flux (or f.lux). Flux adjusts screen brightness and color depending on the time of day automatically, so you aren’t blasted with bright light at bedtime or early in the morning. Due to App Store restrictions, Flux has been only available on the Mac OS X platform until now. Whilst it isn’t available through the App Store, you can now download and install the Flux beta for iPhone and iPad by sideloading the app through Xcode on the Mac.

It sounds complicated but it’s actually really easy to do. Apple lifted the developer limitations on device app sideloading earlier this year, so it’s completely free. Until Apple relaxes App Store policies, this will be the only way to do this. Read the instructions on how to install Flux after the break …

Installing Flux on iPhone and iPad involves downloading Xcode from the Mac App Store, for free. Xcode 7 lets anyone install apps locally to their iOS devices, which is how this whole process can work.

Next, download the open-source Flux iOS Xcode project from the Flux website. The app works on iPhones and iPads running iOS 9.

Double-click on the xcodeproj file to open Xcode with the file loaded. Connect your iPhone or iPad using a Lightning cable to your Mac. IMG_1349In the Devices menu (top-left of the Xcode window), you should see the name of your iOS device, such as Benjamin’s iPhone. Connecting the iOS device for the first time may require Xcode to do some initial setup, so wait patiently whilst it whirrs away if you don’t see your device name immediately.

Then, press the big Run button — it looks like a Play button from a video app. This builds the source code and packages into an app which will appear on your Home Screen. You now have the F.lux app installed on your iOS device!

The app includes normal night and day color temperature adjustments as well as settings for configuring when you wake up to optimize the transitions between states. Flux for iPhone and iPad even includes a dark mode which turns your device black and red, a stark change from the usual bright white UI of iOS 9.

The reason Flux isn’t allowed in the App Store is because it uses private APIs and requires constant background time. You should always be cautious when sideloading apps. If Flux ever causes problems, like iPhone battery drain, then simply uninstall the app to remove all the features and functionality.

Another major downside of side-loaded apps is that they cannot participate with the App Store automatic updates system. Flux will show a message inside the app if a new build is available but installing the update will require you to connect to Xcode again and perform the install dance again.

Periscope for iOS updated w/ 3D Touch support, new Teleport feature, more

1*U1AFnYSju5BHeqU8l4V_ww

Popular live streaming app Periscope has today announced a major update for its iOS app, bringing with it a handful of new features and optimizations for Apple’s new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. The update bumps the app to version 1.3 and was detailed in a blog post on Medium by Periscope.

First off, the update introduces a new version of the app’s popular Global Map feature. This capability was originally introduced back in June with a handful of limitations. The Global Map didn’t originally show replays and was limited to showing 250 total broadcasts. Now, the app is capable of showing more streams, as well as replays. Live streams are denoted by red dots, while blue dots represent replays from the last 24 hours.

Next up, the Periscope update introduces the ability to skip ahead in replays. You can do so by holding down on the replay and dragging left or right to rewind and fast-forward. You can also drag up and down to change the seek speed. 1*XuMkx0SiE--ewKuDosuZHgExclusive to the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, Periscope 1.3 introduces support for the 3D shortcuts. Pressing on Periscope’s app icon now allows you to perform the following tasks:

  • Search People — Pretty self explanatory!
  • Teleport — Takes you someplace random in the world and shows you a live broadcast from there. We love this shortcut because we’ve always wanted Periscope to feel like teleportation.
  • Broadcast Mutuals — Starts a private broadcast that only your mutual followers see (people you follow, who also follow you). This is a great way to quickly go live to your friends.
  • Broadcast — Quickly start a public broadcast.

Persicope 1.3 is available now on the App Store for free.

Popular Instagram client removed from App Store for harvesting usernames, passwords

Screen Shot 2015-11-10 at 8.31.15 PM

Apple today has pulled a popular Instagram client from the App Store after it was found to be harvesting usernames and passwords. First noticed by developer David L-R on Twitter, the Instagram client InstaAgent has been pulled from the App Store. The app, downloaded more than half a million times, touted that it would let you see who had been viewing your Instagram profile.

David L-R notes in his tweets that InstaAgent was sending account information, including usernames and passwords, unencrypted to a remote server that was not connected to Instagram officially in any way, shape, or form. In extreme cases, InstaAgent was using that login information to post photos to users’ accounts without their consent.

CTc9GKIWsAAozIJ.png-large

The app seemingly had passed Apple’s review process without raising an eyebrow and was never questioned until today, thanks in large part to its wild success in terms of downloads. Instagram, of course, has always encouraged users not to download or share information with third-party apps. In addition to being removed from the App Store, InstaAgent was also today removed from the Google Play Store, where it had also amassed around 500k downloads.

Today’s revelation comes two months after hundreds of apps were infected by fake Xcode tools. The apps had been developed using counterfeit versions of Xcode, dubbed XcodeGhost, that injected malicious code into apps without developer knowledge during the submission process.

Apple has yet to officially comment on the removal of InstaAgent, but it’s likely we won’t ever see it back on the App Store. At least, any time soon.

T-Mobile’s UnCarrier X: Unlimited video streaming, double data w/ Simple Choice

lp-mq-binge-on-desktop-1240x565

As was widely rumored, T-Mobile has today announced at their UnCarrier X event that customers can now stream unlimited video from certain services without impacting their data caps. The new program is called Binge On (not all too different than the company’s previously-launched Music Freedom in principle), and the list of compatible services includes many favorites like ESPN, Netflix, HBO Now, and more. The company also announced new Simple Choice plans…

Here’s the full list of supported services:

Crackle, Encore, ESPN, Fox Sports, Fox Sports Go, HBO Now, HBO Go, Hulu, MLB, Movieplex, NBC Sports, Netflix, Sling TV, Sling Box, SHOWTIME, STARZ, T-Mobile TV, Univision Deportes, Ustream, Vessel, Vevo, VUD

While this sounds great, it’s worth noting that T-Mobile is going to stream the video to you what it says is “DVD quality or better” (480p+), made more efficient with a proprietary compression technology. Any streaming service could theoretically join the program — as long as they meet T-Mobile’s requirements. The absence of YouTube is notable, though it could be around the corner considering that it will definitely be high-demand.

Also announced today, T-Mobile is giving Simple Choice customers double the data through what it’s calling Simple Choice Amped. Those on 1 GB, 3 GB, and 5 GB high-speed data plans will now have 2 GB, 6 GB, and 10 GB of data.

Here’s the gist:

Simple Choice customers still start with one line at just $50 a month for unlimited data, talk and text on T-Mobile’s nationwide 4G LTE network. But you’ll now get a full 2GB of 4G LTE data—twice the previous amount—on each line. As before, customers can still add a second line for $30 a month−but now with 2GB of 4G LTE data. Additional lines up to 12 are still only $10 per month—but each now come with 2GB of 4G LTE data.

Rounding it off, T-Mobile says that if everyone on a family plan gets additional data, Family Match will give everyone on the plan double the data across all lines. Finally, as a “celebration” of today’s announcements, T-Mobile is making the fourth line on a family plan free. This means that, for a “limited time,” a family can get four lines for $120 with 6 GB each.

Both Binge On and the new Simple Choice plan are effective starting Sunday for consumers on new plans and Binge One will roll-out to all T-Mobile users starting Thursday, November 19.

Abner Li contributed to this report.

T-Mobile Unleashes Mobile Video with Binge On™

Video now streams free at T-Mobile for HBO, Hulu, Netflix, SHOWTIME, Sling TV, STARZ subscribers without using up their high-speed data – 24 total services included initially with more to come
Biggest-ever update to Simple Choice doubles your data at no extra cost when everyone in the family gets extra data

Los Angeles, California — November 10, 2015 — At an event held today in the entertainment capital of the world, T-Mobile [NASDAQ: TMUS] announced its landmark 10th Un-carrier move and responded directly to Americans’ surging demand for mobile entertainment by—of all things—unleashing mobile video. Beginning this Sunday, video streams free at T-Mobile for subscribers of HBO, Hulu, Netflix, SHOWTIME, Sling TV, STARZ, WatchESPN and more—with more streaming services on the way—without ever burning up customers’ high-speed data. And it’s available to all current and new Simple Choice customers on qualifying plans—at absolutely no extra cost.

On top of that, the Un-carrier today also amped up its flagship Simple Choice plan—in the biggest update to Simple Choice ever—by doubling the data at every level and cutting the cost of extra gigs. On top of that, families can now get twice as much high-speed data as before—at no extra cost— when everyone gets extra 4G LTE data. And that’s all on the nation’s fastest 4G LTE network, now reaching 302 million Americans and counting.

Taken together, today’s moves give Un-carrier customers far more data that lasts far longer – prompting T-Mobile President and CEO, John Legere to declare today “Data Day” – the day the company took its Un-carrier movement to the next level.

“Un-carrier X marks the next step in this revolution, and it is massive,” said John Legere, President and CEO of T-Mobile. “Today, we’re not only doubling your data in Simple Choice, we’re making your data work a lot harder for you! With Binge On, video streams free from 24 streaming services to start, and more to come! Only T-Mobile would find a way for customers to watch unlimited HBO, Hulu, Netflix, Sling TV and more…without eating into their LTE data, while the Duopoly is squeezing consumers with overage fees and over-buying! T-Mobile is un-leashing entertainment and giving customers exactly what they want!”

Binge On − Watch your shows, not your data
With Binge On, video now streams free for viewers and subscribers of Crackle, Encore, ESPN, Fox Sports, Fox Sports Go, HBO Now, HBO Go, Hulu, MLB, Movieplex, NBC Sports, Netflix, Sling TV, Sling Box, SHOWTIME, STARZ, T-Mobile TV, Univision Deportes, Ustream, Vessel, Vevo, VUDU—with more streaming services on the way—without ever touching their 4G LTE data on Simple Choice plans with extra data. T-Mobile is also including Verizon’s Go90 and AT&T’s DirecTV streaming services in Binge On, so even the Duopoly’s video services stream without fear of overages.

Binge On is open to any streaming video provider who meets the technical requirements, which are available online at http://ift.tt/1QgIjIh. And it’s completely free for video streaming providers to join.

“With Binge On, no one pays—not the customers, not the video streaming services—and everyone wins,” said Legere.

Powered by new technology built in to T-Mobile’s network, Binge On optimizes video for mobile screens, minimizing data consumption while still delivering DVD or better quality (e.g. 480p or better). That means more reliable streaming for services that stream free with Binge On, and for almost all other video, it means T-Mobile Simple Choice customers can watch up to three times more video from their data plan. And, as always, T-Mobile has put customers in total control with a switch to activate or deactivate Binge On for each line in their My T-Mobile account.  Binge On is all about customer choice.

In addition, T-Mobile is celebrating the launch of Binge On with an exclusive offer of 30% off a full year’s subscription to Sling TV’s “Best of Live TV” package available to all Simple Choice customers. And those T-Mobile customers with Unlimited smartphone LTE get a free streaming movie rental every single month in 2016 with Binge On.

With mobile video now the #1 way Americans use smartphone data, Binge On is the Un-carrier’s answer to what today’s customers clearly want most from wireless. Customers are using nearly two-and-a-half times more of their wireless data for mobile video in the last two years. But that’s nothing compared to where we’re headed. According to forecasts, mobile video usage is poised to surge more than 400% by 2020.

The old carriers are trying to exploit this trend − and their customers − to line their pockets. For carrier customers, the surge in wireless video has translated directly into an unprecedented surge in overages. Together, the carriers are projected to rake in a record $2.4 billion this year from overage penalties—up a staggering 60% from $1.5 billion just last year. Roughly one quarter of AT&T and Verizon customers say they’ve been hit by overages in the last 6 months – that’s twice as many Verizon customers getting billed for overages compared to just two years ago. Worse still, the carriers’ overages scare customers into buying more data each month than they need—only so Verizon and ATT can repossess it after 30 or 60 days. American wireless customers waste an estimated $45 billion annually overbuying wireless data they don’t use.

With T-Mobile, on the other hand, Binge On now unleashes customers to watch what they want, when they want and on any device they want—without watching their data.

Simple Choice − Now with double the data
With this explosion in data usage, a few gigs is just not enough anymore. So, in the biggest update ever to the company’s wildly popular Simple Choice plan, T-Mobile is giving families and businesses what they want most by doubling their high-speed 4G LTE data when everyone gets extra data.

Of course, Simple Choice customers can add even more 4G LTE data. And now, when everyone in the family gets extra 4G LTE data, families can save even more with T-Mobile’s new Family Match. Everyone will get twice as much data as before at absolutely no extra cost. They can add an extra 4GB of 4G LTE data (on top of the 2GB included), including mobile hotspot data, for just $10 more a month on each line, up to a total of 10GB per line. For families who’d rather customize their data by line, extra data is just $15 a month for each 4GB—compared to $20 a month for 4GB before—a savings of 25% per GB of high-speed data vs. before.

While the Duopoly continues to punish customers on their legacy unlimited LTE plans, the Un-carrier announced it is doubling down on Unlimited Smartphone LTE data by doubling the amount of tethered data included from 7GB to 14GB. And with Binge On, streaming video from participating services won’t eat into that tethered data.

For businesses, the pain is even worse. Nearly two-thirds of small businesses (63%) say they’re now being charged overages, and more than half (52%) of small business limit their employees’ smartphone usage to prevent overages. With the Duopoly, giving employees a smartphone is like creating an open-ended tab where employees can run up insane overages the company has no choice but to pay. With the new Simple Choice plan unveiled today, businesses get double the LTE data at no extra cost at T-Mobile, up to a thousand employees. An average small business with T-Mobile can save 40% compared to AT&T and a full 50% compared to Verizon for similar services.

And, as always, Simple Choice customers have no annual service contracts, no domestic overages and no sharing, and they get all the Un-carrier value the company keeps pouring into the plan – from Simple Global, Music Freedom and Data Stash to Mobile Without Borders, Wi-Fi Un-leashed and Binge On.

To celebrate today’s news, T-Mobile is making the fourth line free. Now, for a limited time, a family of four can get four lines for $120 with 6GB per person (24GB total) – no sharing – at just $30 per line. That’s an incredible four times the high-speed data you get at Verizon who’ll charge you $20 more, and almost five times the data at AT&T where you’ll pay $30 more—$150 for just 5GB your whole family’s gotta share. And now with Binge On, T-Mobile customers don’t just get 6GB each, they get unlimited video streaming from popular sites as well.

Binge On and the new Simple Choice plan will be available starting Sunday, November 15. Existing T-Mobile customers will get Binge On starting Thursday, November 19. Apple doubles external TestFlight testers to 2,000 users, beta periods to 60 days

TestFlight 2-1

In addition to several new software betas and new Tech Talks today, Apple has more developer news to share today. Starting today, TestFlight will now support up to 2,000 external testers for iOS and tvOS. TestFlight allows developers to easily share pre-release versions of their apps with a large group of external testers outside of their own development team.

TestFlight was previously limited to 1,000 external testers on iOS and tvOS. Internal testing is limited to 25 team members on 10 devices each. Apple also notes on its TestFlight website that beta periods now last 60 days versus 30 days before.

Since acquiring TestFlight last year, Apple has maintained TestFlight apps on iOS with support for watchOS and tvOS. Apple first announced these changes, which go live today, earlier this year at WWDC.

Apple releases tvOS 9.1 beta 2 for Apple TV to developers

tvos-hero_2x

One week after the first tvOS 9.1 beta for Apple TV, developers now have access to an updated build of the software update to test. While the initial tvOS 9.1 beta contained no visual changes for users yet, Siri has since been enabled to work with Apple Music on the beta version of the software. Non-developer Apple TV users also recently saw the very first software update for Apple TV yesterday with the release of tvOS 9.0.1, which likely focused on stability and bug fixes as no visual changes were discovered. tvOS 9.1 beta 2 for developers and available to download from Apple’s developer center.

The new Apple TV, launched at the end of last month, delivers the very first App Store for the device as well as Siri support and Apple Music included. Several features from Apple TV 3rd-gen haven’t made it to Apple TV 4th-gen, however, including Bluetooth keyboard support and compatibility with Apple’s Remote app for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. Apple’s Podcasts app also hasn’t made it to the new box yet.

The first two software betas didn’t bring any notable user-facing changes to the desktop OS, but Apple encourages developers to continue testing in areas like Wi-Fi connectivity, graphics capabilities, and built-in apps like Mail and Notes.

The new beta is available through the Updates tab of the Mac App Store for users already on the developer release channel, and through Apple’s developer website for those who are on a retail build.

Apple has released a third beta version of iOS 9.2 for developers and public beta testu users to try. The two previous builds of this operating system introduced support for AT&T’s new NumberSync system and changes to embedded Safari browsers that allow them to load all extensions. It also adds Arabic language support to Siri.

The new build is available from the Software Update section of the Settings app on devices running a previous developer build, or from the Developer Center for those on a public release.

For users on the iOS public beta who aren’t on the current preview build, it can be obtained through the Apple Beta website.

We’ll keep this post updated with any new features discovered in the third beta seed.

Apple Music for Android now available in the Google Play Store

apple-music

After first being announced and previewed in screenshots at WWDC in June, Apple has officially brought its subscription music service Apple Music to Google’s Android platform. Apple Music joins the iPhone maker’s other Android apps Move to iOS and the Beats Pill+ companion app on the Google Play Store.

Apple Music offers access to a large catalog of streaming music and music recommendations. Music and music videos can be saved for offline listening as well. Memberships costs $9.99/month for individuals, the same as Beats Music subscriptions which Apple Music replaces, after a three-month free trial period. Apple Music family plans for up to five different accounts is available through Family Sharing on iOS and Mac for $14.99/month.

Apple Music for Android is on the Google Play Store now:

Introducing the beta of Apple Music on Android.
Notes about the beta period:
• Music videos are coming soon.
• Sign-ups and upgrades to Family memberships require Mac or iOS.
• Sign-up process to be optimized for Android.
Apple Music on Android also means iTunes music purchases can be easily accessed from Google’s platform.

Beats Music subscribers will need to move from the old app to the new Apple Music app to continue using the service. Libraries and playlists can be transferred over. While Beats Music has also been available on Windows Phone, a version of Apple Music on Microsoft’s mobile platform will not be available.

As for the Apple Music business, Android adds one more access point for subscribers. In October, Apple CEO Tim Cook shared that Apple had 6.5 million paying Apple Music customers with 15 million in total including free trial customers.

Apple’s music subscription service is now available on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple Watch, Apple TV 4, Mac, PC, and Android. For comparison, Beats Music which Apple Music is based on and replaces was available on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Android, Windows Phone, and the web.

How Android users handle Apple Music app reviews on the Play Store will be interesting to watch. Beats Music for Android enjoyed a 4-star rating after launching on the platform months before Apple acquired it. Move to iOS and the Beats Pill+ companion app, in comparison, each carry a low 2-star rating.

SwiftKey updated with complete set of new emoji for iOS 9.1

swiftkey emoji

The popular SwiftKey keyboard for iOS has been updated today with support for all of iOS 9.1’s new emoji icons. Included in the new version are such favorites as the 🦄 unicorn, 🌭 hot dog, 🖖🏻Vulcan salute, and new expressions like the 🤔 thinking face, the 🙄 eye roll face, and (my personal favorite) the 🙃 upside down smiley face.

All of the new emojis work with the existing SwiftKey features, like Emoji Insights, which provides fun statistics about your emoji usage, like which one you overuse more than other people and which US state best matches your emoji usage.

SwiftKey is free on the App Store.

Want to Grow Your SaaS Company? Track These 12 Marketing Metrics

Clearly defined and closely monitored marketing metrics are critical to the success of any SaaS company. Not only do they help measure the effectiveness of your marketing campaigns, but they also help diagnose risk and identify opportunities to accelerate growth.

How do I know? I’ve spent the last six years of my professional life tracking a small list of SaaS marketing metrics very closely — maybe even somewhat obsessively at times.

In doing so, I’ve found that these metrics function much like a scorecard for marketing. By highlighting the performance of particular tasks or initiatives, these metrics hold the keys to what almost every growth oriented-marketer wants: bigger budgets, accelerated growth, and bigger opportunities.

Below I’ve detailed 12 of the most important metrics I’ve kept my eye on over the years. While these metrics have helped fuel the SaaS companies I’ve worked with, it’s important to keep in mind that all businesses are a bit different. To help move your company forward, pull from this list as you see fit.

12 SaaS Marketing Metrics That Matter

1) Unique Visitors

Unique visitors are simply the amount of unique individuals coming to your website. To be honest, this is the closest thing to a “vanity metric” on this list because unique visitors gives you no sense of the quality of the visitors to your website.

That said, it’s a helpful measure of how accessible your website is, and it’s worth keeping tabs on the mix of visitors that come to your site organically, directly, and from paid programs.

2) Leads

It’s critical that sales and marketing teams hash out and agree on the difference between “leads” and “qualified leads.”

In the vain of keeping this simple, I like to refer to “leads” as any lead that’s closer to the top of the funnel. In other words, maybe they’ve expressed interest in a topic related to your product by reading a blog, but they are yet to show direct interest in the product itself.

To help you gain a better understanding of how to weed out leads that aren’t a great fit, check out this post.

3) Qualified Leads

When I say “qualified leads,” I’m generally speaking about leads that I’d classify as living in the middle of the funnel — commonly product demos or free trials.

A prospect that requests a demo has signaled a desire to see how your product works. Even better, a free trial is interested in kicking the tires on the product to see how it works for their business.

These types of leads are frequently referred to as “marketing qualified leads,” and I like to report on them as such.

4) New Customers

This one’s as straightforward as it gets: How many new customers signed up for your product this month? This quarter? This year?

While revenue typically trumps new customer sign-ups in terms of importance, it’s still useful to know how often you’re winning and how much of the addressable market you are capturing.

5) Revenue

Cash on the books means a great deal to the success of your business. By tracking monthly recurring revenue (MRR), annual recurring revenue (ARR) and average revenue per account (ARPA) you’ll be able to strengthen your understanding of how much money is actually coming in.

6) Qualified Lead to Customer Rate

If you’re interested in “growth hacking,” there’s no better place to start than trying to improve the rate at which you convert qualified leads into paying customers.

What percentage of free trial sign-ups end up buying your product? What percentage of prospects who request a demo buy?

7) Unique Visitor to Qualified Lead Rate

So you have thousands of unique visitors coming to your website every month … that’s great. But what percentage of them actually interact with your site and become a qualified lead?

Once you know this number, you can use A/B testing software to run experiments that can influence your conversion rate. For guidelines on how to run an effective A/B test, check out this resource.

8) Churn

Churn can be expressed in terms of either revenue or customers, and it’s absolutely one of the most important metrics for any SaaS company. In essence, churn tells you how much business you are losing over a given period of time.

While many argue that churn is a product or customer service metric, I’d argue that it’s an “everybody metric,” including marketing. There is not a more sure-fire way to increase your churn rate than to market and sell your product to people who don’t truly need it.

To measure customer churn, take the number of customers you had at the beginning of the month, say 500. Once you have this number, subtract the number of customers you lost in that month, say 50. Your customer churn rate (expressed monthly) would be 50/500 = 10%.

9) Customer Lifetime Value

Customer lifetime value (CLTV) refers to the amount of money your average customer pays over the course of their relationship with your company.

To calculate CLTV, you must first calculate your average customer lifetime. To do so, use this formula: 1/customer churn rate (expressed in months or years). For example, if you have a 10% monthly churn rate your customer lifetime is 1/.10 = 10 months.

Once you know your average customer lifetime, you must then multiply it by your average revenue per account (ARPA) over a given time period. To do so, use this formula: Total revenue/total number of customers. For example, say your business made $5,000,000 in revenue last month off of 5,000 total customers. $5,000,000/5,000 = $1,000 in revenue per account.

Finally, to determine customer lifetime value, you’ll simply multiply customer lifetime (CL) by your average revenue per account (ARPA). In the example above that would be 10 months*$1,000 = $10,000 in customer lifetime value.

10) Customer Acquisition Cost

Customer acquisition cost (CAC) divides your total sales and marketing spending by the number of new customers you add in a given period. For example, if you spent $250,000 in sales and marketing expenditures last month and added 250 customers, then your CAC would be $1,000.

It’s important to note that CAC calculations should include personnel-related expenses — the cost of your sales and marketing teams (both salaries and benefits).

As your company scales and spends more money on marketing expenses not as tightly correlated with customer acquisition (think PR), you may want to filter some of these expenses out of your calculation of CAC. However, for earlier stage start-ups, I’d recommend that all sales and marketing related expenses be folded into your CAC calculation.

11) CLTV:CAC Ratio

The relationship between the lifetime value of your customers and the amount you spend to acquire them is the single metric I rely on most to measure the health and growth potential of customer acquisition programs within any SaaS company.

A general rule of thumb is that your company must have a CLTV three times greater than your CAC in order to be a “healthy” business. If your CLTV:CAC ratio is greater than 3:1, then you have a customer acquisition engine that is working and likely warrants additional spending in sales and marketing. (Depending on the nature of your product, you may fall slightly outside of this baseline.)

Pour money into the machine, and favorable returns will be spit out.

12) Gross Margin

Gross margin is commonly considered a financial metric, but I think it’s an important marketing metric because marketing should play a role in pricing your products and services — which contributes significantly to your gross margin.

Quite simply, gross margin looks at the percentage of sales revenue that a company retains after it subtracts the costs associated with delivering their products and services. (Gross Margin (%) = Revenue – Cost of Goods Sold/Revenue.)

For example, if a company made $10,000,000 in revenue and it cost them $2,000,000 to deliver their products and services, then the company’s gross margin would be ($10,000,000-$2,000,000)/$10,000,000 = .80 or 80%.

Keeping Tabs on Measurement

While tracking these metrics well is critically important for any SaaS company, it’s worth mentioning that doing so isn’t always so easy.

Issues with data integrity and simply defining what measurement systems you’ll use are not always so straightforward. To ensure you’re reporting on factual numbers, here are two pieces of advice:

  • Declare “systems of record” for each metric. This ensures that your measurements will be consistent. It also makes it easy for everyone to understand where you’re getting your data from each month. When determining which system to use, take the time to understand how each option calculates the number you’re looking for so that it can be easily explained to others.
  • Use a business intelligence tool that pulls data from multiple sources into one dashboard. There are many tools on the market today that pull together your data from CRMs, spreadsheets, marketing automation systems, and other data sources into a single repository. This typically allows data from different sources to be used in the same calculation if necessary.

Metrics Don’t Matter If Nobody Cares

While it’s typically the responsibility of your company’s marketing leadership to track these metrics and be able to explain the relative importance of each of them, it’s also important that they are drawing connections between the numbers and the people on the team.

This starts with making your data accessible, and then hinges on making your data easy to understand. Everybody on your marketing team should know very clearly that success for them means influencing one of these metrics in a positive direction.

In other words, if you want to move numbers in the right direction, you need to get people to care about them.

KGI: Apple unlikely to add AMOLED screens to iPhone as Foxconn builds out new LCD factory

Rose Gold iPhone 6s Plus Apple Watch

In a research note, reliable supply chain analyst KGI’s Ming-Chi Kuo is suggesting that Apple is unlikely to bring AMOLED screens to the iPhone for many years to come, through 2018 at least, and almost certainly not coming to the iPhone 7.

OLED iPhones have been a long-running rumor but Apple has remained steadfast with investments in better LCD panels for the most part. Yield for OLED panels continues to be a big issue given the incredible scale Apple requires for iPhone shipments.

Apple started using AMOLED in its product line this year with the Apple Watch, which takes full advantage of the deep blacks OLED screens can create in its user interface, blurring the line between bezel and screen wherever possible. In an interview earlier this year, Jony Ive called the iPhone screen (which cannot reproduce such an effect as LCD contrast levels are not as good) as ‘old’.

Regardless, The KGI note says that Foxconn is investing in a new $4bn LTPS TFT-LCD plant for iPhone screens, a further indication that Apple is not looking to change screen technology anytime soon. The plant is scheduled for mass production in 2018. Although Apple could change course over three years, the current outlook is definitely against AMOLED. Certainly, don’t bet on the iPhone 7 featuring an AMOLED display.

Sonos debuts new Trueplay speaker tuning feature with latest Controller iOS app

Trueplay Sonos

Back in September, Sonos unveiled an impressive new feature for its wireless speakers called Trueplay. Using the built-in microphones on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, this Sonos feature lets you fine tune your speaker to the room it’s in while optimizing the sound regardless of placement. Starting today, Sonos users can use try out Trueplay using the latest version of the controller app for iOS.

Trueplay setup is super simple too. Because Trueplay tunes your Sonos speaker to the room and its surroundings, it does require setting up any time you relocate your hardware. But the process takes just a couple minutes and only requires that you pace around the room waving your iOS device up and down enough to catch the audio wave sent from your speaker.

One of the best parts of Trueplay is that it can improve the sound of existing Sonos speakers. Trueplay works through the latest version of the Sonos controller app to fine tune the original and upcoming PLAY:5, and all PLAY:1 and PLAY:3 Sonos speakers. Once you setup Trueplay, you can easily adjust the equalization settings to fit your preferences.

To get started, grab the new Sonos Controller 6.0 for iOS from the App Store, then update your Sonos speakers before taking advantage of Trueplay.

Early iOS 10 and OS X 10.12 ‘Fuji’ internal testing ramps up ahead of 2016 launches

ios10

A few months following the launches of both iOS 9 and OS X 10.11 El Capitan, Apple has shifted a large portion of its software engineering resources over to development of the upcoming iOS 10 and OS X 10.12. While iOS 9.2 and OS X 10.11.2 remain under development, 2016’s mobile and desktop Apple operating systems are now moving forward at full speed, sources indicate.

osx

As indicated by checks of our own Google Analytics data, testing of both 2016 Apple operating systems has picked up significantly in recent weeks, after a slow start between September and October. Sources indicate that the internal codename of the new Mac operating system is “Fuji,” which follows last year’s “Gala” release. Stay tuned for details in the future about both of the new operating systems.
