Making The Grade: Criteria for picking the best iPad apps
Making The Grade is a weekly series from Bradley Chambers covering Apple in education. Bradley has been managing Apple devices in an education environment since 2009. Through his experience deploying and managing 100s of Macs and 100s of iPads, Bradley will highlight ways in which Apple’s products work at scale, stories from the trenches of IT management, and ways Apple could improve its products for students.
In the education industry, most people are very transparent about sharing advice. Even in the private school industry, you likely aren’t “competing” for the same kids, so we’ve ended up with a very open group of people that are willing to share best practices, tips, and tricks. One of the most common questions I get is about app selection for iPad deployments. I’ve been researching apps for a long time, so for me, it’s less about what apps are the best and more about what criteria do I use when examining them. Here some of the things I look for (in no particular order).
Leaked macOS 10.14 screenshots show off new dark mode, Apple News app for Mac, and Xcode 10
Developer Steve Troughton Smith today tweeted photos of macOS 10.14 with some very juicy details about Apple’s upcoming operating system. The OS is very clearly sporting a fresh new dark theme, presumably a toggle-able setting, with the dark UI affecting all application chrome. You can also see an icon for a Mac News app in the Dock, as well as a first look at Xcode 10.
These certainly seem legit although Smith did not disclose how he came across these images, however they represent a pretty big leak ahead of Monday’s keynote …

Apple highlighting apps made by WWDC 2018 scholarship winners with App Store Today feature
Apple is featuring apps from WWDC 2018 scholarship winners in a special editorial piece in the Today tab of the iOS 11 App Store. It’s a cool gesture that gives some exposure to apps from upcoming developers. The feature highlights scholarship winners from various regions, with a list of names and links to their apps already on the App Store.
There are usually a couple hundred scholarship places given out at each WWDC, and this list only includes about twenty names. It’s not clear how Apple chose which individuals made the list. The feature will be rolling out to the App Store front page, worldwide, from tomorrow (June 2nd).

iOS 12 will upgrade ARKit with ability for two iPhones to see same virtual object
As we inch closer to Apple’s WWDC keynote on Monday, new details are starting to slip out about what the company plans to present. Reuters is reporting that Apple plans to upgrade ARKit, Apple’s augmented reality framework for iOS, with the ability for two users to see the same virtual object in space. The feature will reportedly be implemented in a way that considers data privacy for users as well.
Alleged ‘iPhone 9’ schematics claim to show entry level 6.1-inch LCD model
On the heels of a new render release from this morning of what we might see with Apple’s 6.1-inch LCD iPhone, another new set of images has surfaced. These ‘iPhone 9’ renders offer side by side comparisons with iPhone X and the expected 6.5-inch X Plus.
macOS 10.13.5 now available for Mac, includes Messages in iCloud

WSJ: Apple bringing Search Ads to results within apps, in talks with Snapchat and Pinterest
The Wall Street Journal has published a new report detailing one thing we might expect to see on stage at WWDC next week: a digital ad platform expansion. According to the Journal, Apple has been in talks with major apps including Snapchat and Pinterest about the project:
Over the past year, Apple has met with Snap Inc., Pinterest Inc. and other companies about participating in an Apple network that would distribute ads across their collective apps, the people said. Apple would share revenue with the apps displaying the ads, with the split varying from app to app, they said.

Renders imagine 2018 6.1-inch LCD iPhone X with single rear camera and aluminum frame
