Apple joins consortium to help with more efficient video compression tech called AV1
Apple has joined the Alliance for Open Media, a technology consortium that is working on a new industry standard, high-efficiency video codec called AV1.
The group includes Amazon, Google, Facebook, Netflix, Hulu, Intel, and many others. Apple was quietly added to the website’s homepage today, and is even considered a founding member (via CNET). Here’s how the consortium describes its goal:
Spotify hits 70 million paid subscriber milestone as it pursues public offering
Busy week for Spotify news. Just yesterday it was reported that the music streaming company privately filed plans to go public, and now Spotify has announced that it has hit 70 million total subscribers. For comparison, Apple Music which launched years later but has Apple’s backing last disclosed 30 million customers.

A new report from Canalys today shares its prediction that smart speakers are on track for record growth and will be the hottest consumer tech items of 2018. Canalys believes that consumers will buy 56.3 million smart speakers in 2018, just shy of doubling from 2017 sales.
