Report: Apple TV could be home for rumored Amazon Echo-like Siri speaker
Earlier this week a new report surfaced claiming Apple’s long-awaited Siri SDK could appear at this year’s WWDC, adding that Apple has been working on a dedicated Siri speaker similar to Amazon Echo or Google Home. Today VentureBeat reports that a source has indicated that a new version of the Apple TV actually may be Apple’s Amazon Echo and Google Home competitor.

Apple debuts Arabic version of Apple.com with right-to-left reading support

New iPhone 7 schematics suggest similar dimensions, unlikely front changes on iPhone 7 Plus
There are a pair of new iPhone 7 schematics circling the Internet today, depicting the 4.7 inch and 5.5 inch SKUs of Apple’s next-generation flagship phone. The 4.7 inch iPhone 7 drawing appears pretty much as expected, resembling the iPhone 6s by and large with repositioned (and larger) rear camera and redesigned antenna lines. Similar three dimensional schematics surfaced two weeks ago.
The measurements listed indicate the 7 will be a tad thicker at 7.2mm excluding the camera bump, compared to 7.1 mm for the iPhone 6s, but a 0.1mm difference is effectively nothing and effectively impossible to notice by humans. (Sadly, these schematics show that the new iPhone 7 camera will indeed protrude from the rest of the casing). The drawings reiterate the point that Apple will remove the headphone jack, re-using the space as a second speaker grille.

Patent troll VirnetX asks court to ban FaceTime & iMessage, increase damages award by $190M
Infamous patent troll VirnetX has formally asked a Texas court this week to order Apple to stop providing its FaceTime and iMessage features to customers. The request follows VirnetX’s victory in court earlier this year to the tune of $625 million, which the firm wants to see increased by $190 million or more, Law360 reports:

Adobe previews upcoming ‘content-aware crop’ Photoshop CC feature
Adobe is showing off a new feature coming to the next big version of Photoshop CC called content-aware crop. In the video demo below, Adobe gives the example of cropping a photo of a child by straightening the horizon in the shot, but doing so cuts off the lifeguard sign behind the child. Content-aware crop solves this problem…
Opinion: With Apple finally showing Siri some love, have we hit ‘peak app’?
Last year, I wrote a Feature Request asking that Apple give third-party apps access to Siri, and generally work at beefing-up both the intelligence and the capabilities of its intelligent assistant. A couple of weeks ago, I wrote an opinion piece pointing to the fact that Viv is exactly what Siri should have been by now.
This week, a report suggests that I may finally be getting my wish. Apple is said to be not only planning to offer a Siri SDK to all developers, but also building an Amazon Echo/Google Home type box that will embed Siri more deeply in the home through integration with HomeKit. We will, says the report, find out more at WWDC.
If true, the implications could be profound – perhaps even meaning that we’ve hit ‘peak app’ …

16 of the Best Website Homepage Design Examples
You never get a second chance to make a first impression — that’s why your homepage is undoubtedly one of the most important web pages on your website.
For any given company, the homepage is its virtual front door. If a new visitor doesn’t like what they see, their knee-jerk reaction is to hit the “back” button.
That’s right — unfortunately, a lot of people still judge a book by its cover.
What makes a website’s homepage design brilliant instead of blah? Well, it takes more than looks alone — it also has to work well. That’s why the most brilliant homepages on this list don’t just score high in beauty, but also in brains.
But before we dive into the 16 examples, let’s dissect some of the best practices of homepage design.
What Makes a Good Website Homepage Design
All of the homepage designs shown here utilize a combination of the following elements. Not every page is perfect, but the best homepage designs get many of these right:
1) It clearly answers “Who I am,” “What I do,” and/or “What can you (the visitor) do here.”
If you’re a well-known brand or company (i.e., Coca Cola) you may be able to get away with not having to describe who you are and what you do; but the reality is, most businesses still need to answer these questions so that each visitor knows they are in the “right place.”
Steven Krugg sums it up best in his best-selling book, Don’t Make Me Think: If visitors can’t identify what it is you do within seconds, they won’t stick around long.
2) It resonates with the target audience.
A homepage needs to be narrowly focused — speaking to the right people in their language. The best homepages avoid “corporate gobbledygook,” and eliminate the fluff.
3) It communicates a compelling value proposition.
When a visitor arrives on your homepage, it needs to compel them to stick around. The homepage is the best place to nail your value proposition so that prospects choose to stay on your website and not navigate to your competitors’.
4) It’s optimized for multiple devices.
All the homepages listed here are highly usable, meaning they are easy to navigate and there aren’t “flashy” objects that get in the way of browsing, such as flash banners, animations, pop-ups, or overly-complicated and unnecessary elements. Many of them are also mobile-optimized, which is an incredibly important must-have in today’s mobile world.
5) It includes calls-to-action (CTAs).
Every homepage listed here effectively uses primary and secondary calls-to-action to direct visitors to the next logical step. Examples include “Free Trial,” “Schedule a Demo,” “Buy Now,” or “Learn More.” (Here are 30 examples of great CTAs for more inspiration.)
Remember, the goal of the homepage is to compel visitors to dig deeper into your website and move them further down the funnel. CTAs tell them what to do next so they don’t get overwhelmed or lost. More importantly, CTAs turn your homepage into a sales- or lead-generation engine, and not just brochure-wear.
6) It’s always changing.
The best homepages aren’t always static. Some of them, like Whitehouse.gov, are constantly changing to reflect the needs, problems, and questions of their visitors. Some homepages also change from A/B testing or dynamic content.
7) It employs great overall design.
A well-designed page is important to building trust, communicating value, and navigating visitors to the next step. As such, these homepages effectively use layout, CTA placement, whitespace, colors, fonts, and other supporting elements.
Now, get ready to learn about excellent homepage design through the following 16 real-life examples.
Website Design Inspiration: 16 of the Best Homepage Designs
1) FreshBooks
Why It’s Brilliant
- It’s easy to consume. There is much debate on whether short or long homepages work better. If you choose to do the latter, you need to make it easy to scroll and read — and that’s exactly what this site does. It almost acts like a story.
- There’s great use of contrast and positioning with the primary calls-to-action — it’s clear what the company wants you to convert on when you arrive.
- The copy used in the calls-to-action “Try it Free for 30 Days” is very compelling.
- The subheadline is also great: “Join 5 million people using FreshBooks to painlessly send invoices, track time and capture expenses.” It zeros in on a common pain point for freelancers and small businesses (FreshBooks’ target audience) — typically accounting software is often “painfully complex.”
2) Airbnb
Why It’s Brilliant
- The homepage is gorgeous on its own: It greets you with a full-screen video of beautiful, high-definition footage of travelers doing activities as if they’re locals, from cooking in the kitchen to buying local cheeses to driving a moped through the streets. It’s very human and authentic.
- It includes the destination and date search form that most visitors come looking for, right up front, guiding visitors to the logical next step.
- The search form is “smart,” meaning it’ll auto-fill the user’s last search if they’re logged in.
- The primary call-to-action (“Search”) contrasts with the background and stands out; but the secondary call-to-action for hosts is visible above the fold, too.
3) Mint
Why It’s Brilliant
- It’s a super simple design with a strong, no-jargon headline and sub-headline.
- The homepage gives off a secure but easy-going vibe, which is important for a product that handles financial information.
- It also contains simple, direct, and compelling call-to-action copy: “Sign up free.” The CTA design is also brilliant — the secured lock icon hits home the safety message once again.
4) Dropbox (Consumer)
Why It’s Brilliant
- Dropbox’s homepage and website is the ultimate example of simplicity. It limits its use of copy and visuals, and embraces whitespace.
- It’s difficult to tell from the static screenshot above, but this site captures your attention with its subtle use of whimsical animation in that graphic.
- Their sub-headline is simple, yet powerful: “Get to all your files from anywhere, on any device, and share them with anyone.” No need to decode jargon to figure out what Dropbox really does.
- It has a focus on one primary call-to-action, “Sign up for free.” But the Google-enabled sign-up feature reduces friction for visitors who hate completing long registration forms.
5) Dropbox (Business)
Why It’s Briliant
- It’s a great example of providing a different website experience for a different audience. Unlike their main homepage, which was originally built for the consumer side (above), their business users require more information and additional proof points that Dropbox for Business a safe and scalable solution for companies (a perception issue that Dropbox addresses on their homepage directly).
- Dropbox continues to carry over it’s simple design and branding. It includes only what is important: A large, relevant image with supporting copy, and a “Try free for 30 days” call-to-action button
6) Whitehouse.gov
Why It’s Brilliant
- Building a website that supports an entire nation is no easy task. Whitehouse.gov is a constantly changing to reflect top concerns and priorities — the homepage alone has gone through hundreds of revisions. Testing and optimization is a key component to a brilliant homepage design.
- What’s particularly great about Whitehouse.gov is that it is completely unlike most government-related websites. It has a clean design and fosters a community.
- It’s fairly easy to find what you’re looking for when you land here. And if you can’t find it immediately, there’s even a handy search box.
7) 4 Rivers Smokehouse
Why It’s Brilliant
- Drool. That’s what I think when I arrive at the website for 4 Rivers Smokehouse. Combined with great photography, the headline “Brisket. 18 years to master. Yours to savor.” sounds like an experience worth trying.
- The parallax scrolling guides you on a tour through their services, menu, and people having a great time — a great use of this popular design trend.
- The only negative? I don’t live close enough to this place. Boo.
8) Cobb Pediatric Therapy Services
Why It’s Brilliant
- The headline and subheadline appeal to the visitors’ emotional side: “Work With a Company That Gets It”; “Trust us. We’ve been there too! We’ll find jobs where you can thrive.” That value proposition is unique and compelling.
- It’s hard to tell from the screenshot above, but the headline is on a rotating carousel that caters to specific personas, from job applicants to people searching for a therapist for their schools.
- There are several pathways visitors can take when they arrive on the page, but the calls-to-action are positioned well, worded simply, and contrast with the rest of the page.
9) Jill Konrath
Why It’s Brilliant
- It’s simple and gets straight to the point. From the headline and sub-headline, it’s clear exactly what Jill Konrath does (and how she can help your business).
- It also gives easy access to Jill’s thought leadership materials, which is important to establishing her credibility as a keynote speaker.
- It’s easy to subscribe to the newsletter and get in touch — two of her primary calls-to-action.
- It includes news outlet logos and testimonials as social proof.
10) Evernote
Why It’s Brilliant
- Over the years, Evernote has turned from a simple note-saving app into a suite of business products. This isn’t always easy to convey on a homepage, but Evernote does a nice job packaging many potential messages into a few key benefits.
- This homepage is uses a combination of rich, muted colors in the video and their signature bright green and white highlights to make conversion paths stand out.
- Following a simple headline (“Remember Everything”), the eye path then leads you to their call-to-action, “Sign Up For Free.”
11) Telerik
Why It’s Brilliant
- “Stuffy enterprise” isn’t the feeling you get when you arrive at Telerik’s website. For a company that offers many technology products, their bold colors, fun designs, and videography give off a Google-like vibe. Just one important aspect to making visitors feel welcome and letting them know they’re dealing with real people.
- I love the simple, high-level overview to their six product offers. It’s very clear way of communicating what the company does and how people can learn more.
- The copy is lightweight and easy to read. They speak the language of their customers.
12) Boxbee
Why It’s Brilliant
- The headline is a call-to-action directed straight for their target audience: entrepreneurs in the storage industry.
- It has a very clean and simple design. The design highlights the headline, and then immediately shows the primary call-to-action — not much else.
- That primary call-to-action is in a highly contrasting color, making it stand out.
13) eWedding
Why It’s Brilliant
- For those love birds planning their big day, eWedding is a great destination to building a custom wedding website. The homepage isn’t cluttered and only includes the necessary elements to get people to starting building their websites.
- The sub-headline “Over 750,000 wedding websites built!” is great social proof.
- They’ve included excellent product visuals, a great headline, and a call-to-action that reduces friction with the copy, “Start website.”
14) Basecamp
Why It’s Brilliant
- For a long time, Basecamp has had brilliant homepages, and here you can see why. They often feature awesome headlines and clever cartoons.
- The call-to-action is bold and above the fold.
- In this example, the company chose a more blog-like homepage (or single page site approach), which provides much more information on the product.
15) charity: water
Why It’s Brilliant
- This isn’t your typical non-profit website. Lots of visuals, creative copy, and use of interactive web design make this stand out.
- The animated headline is a great way to capture multiple messages on one line.
- Great use of video and photography, particularly in capturing emotion that causes action.
16) TechValidate
Why It’s Brilliant
- This homepage is beautifully designed. I particularly love their use of white space, contrasting colors, and customer-centric design.
- The headline is clear and compelling, as are the calls-to-action.
- There’s also a great information hierarchy, making it easy to scan and understand the page quickly.

Report: Apple considered buying Time Warner last year, will ramp spending on original TV content
The Financial Times is reporting that Apple considered a buyout of Time Warner late last year, with Apple executive Eddy Cue raising the idea at a meeting with Time Warner’s head of corporate strategy, Olaf Olafsson. The idea of bid was very much tentative and did not enter serious negotiations involving Tim Cook, according to the report. However, Apple is still interested in acquiring media company talent and sources indicate the company is ramping spending on original content: “several hundred million dollars a year”.
Apple has long been rumored to want to launch a skinny cable subscription service for internet television, in concert with its Apple TV set top box. At Startup Fest earlier in the week, Tim Cook said he wants Apple to be a catalyst in the entertainment business.

Review: Burkley hardshell leather MacBook Air case, premium leather at a premium price
I’m not normally one for hiding Apple’s gorgeous designs away inside cases, but my 11-inch MacBook Air is used almost exclusively when I’m out and about, so it does normally live in a TwelveSouth BookBook case to keep it safe on its travels. I adore that case, so persuading me to set it aside for an alternative would not be an easy task.
But I was very taken with the leather iPhone and iPad cases I recently reviewed from NY-based Burkley, so I decided to give one of the company’s snap-on leather MacBook Air covers a try. It currently offers these for the MacBook Air only (both 11- and 13-inch) – though it does also have a non-snap-on variation for the 12-inch MacBook.
Burkley likes to mix up its leather offerings for each product, with the Antique Camel Leather I liked last time not available for the MacBook, so I tried the Special Burned Tan Leather. This is a fairly standard tan color in the center, with darker burned-in edges …

´
- ¿Vas a dirigirte solo a mujeres? ¿A hombres?
- ¿A jóvenes universitarios? ¿Abogados?
[FASE 3.2. FIDELIZAR AL USUARIO]
Segundo paso, Email Marketing
[FASE 3.3. CONSEGUIR ALCANCE SEGMENTADO]
Tercer paso, Facebook Ads

[FASE 5.5.

All drop-tests should be done this way: iPhone 6s vs Samsung Galaxy S7 to the death
Drop-tests are always fun to watch, but I’ve always felt that the reliability of most of them is suspect simply because there are so many variables.
Most involve someone dropping a phone by hand, and the distance is often as imprecisely measured as ‘waist height’ or ‘head height,’ making it hard to be sure both phones experienced exactly the same force. Dropping a phone from a hand can result in differences in initial angles, and releasing one side of the phone a fraction of a second before the other can impart a rotation to the device. In short, most drop-tests are more entertainment than science.

9 Questions to Ask Before Creating Another Social Media Account
The social landscape today looks a lot different than it did last year … or even last month. As soon as your figure out a successful strategy on one channel, another one shows up and begins to demand your attention.
Sound familiar?
For a lot of marketers, determining exactly where and when to spend your precious resources (read: bandwidth and money) can be a challenge. That’s why it helps to have a plan in place for considering your options.
At HubSpot, we’ve developed a series of questions to help folks determine if it’s really time to create a new social media account. So if you’re struggling to figure out whether or not you’re ready to expand your social presence, take some time to run through the list below. We’ve got a feeling it’ll help.
9 Questions to Ask Before Creating Another Social Media Account
1) Is my persona on this network?
Different social networks have different user bases — even the major ones. For example, 72% of adult internet users are on Facebook, while only 25% are on LinkedIn, according to Pew Research Center. Each of those networks attract users for different reasons, and cater to different user behavior.
Just because a network is hot right now, doesn’t mean you should be using it. The key is to figure out where your personas are engaging on social media and figure out a strategy for connecting with them there. (Don’t have personas yet? Check out our persona templates to get started.)
Note: Keep in mind that the personas you’re targeting might differ between departments. For example, your recruiting department may be looking to engage with different folks than your marketing department.
2) Will this account fill a need that is different from one of my other accounts?
If you have a social channel for your company already, you likely already have an audience that’s interested in receiving your content and updates. Congrats, that’s hard work.
When you start a new account, you are building that audience all over. Don’t do the work for nothing. Unless there is specific content that your audience cannot receive in the original area, or there is a need to serve a new user base, there might not be reason enough to create another account.
In other words, don’t create a need for a new segment if it isn’t already there. Creating a new account should be to drive a business need, not to create one from scratch.
3) Do I have the time required to build an account?
If you are going to have a handle represent your brand it is important for that handle to be meeting the expectations of the customers. Most commonly that means building a sizable following and consistently posting to the account. Otherwise, the handle can look inconsistent with your other handles — or worse, dormant.
That being said, it takes time to build and publish to a new account (multiple hours a week for several weeks). This is a laborious process that requires a big time commitment in order to be successful. Before committing to your new account, take a look at the calendar and see what your team can realistically handle.
4) Do I have the time required to monitor the account?
This is the one that surprises most people. When you open up a direct channel of communication, your audience will use it. Being able to monitor an account is imperative for a good brand experience. This expectation of service can be great if you’re looking to start a support account, but trickier if your account has primarily a marketing function.
Keep in mind that expectations will be different depending on the network you’re considering. On Twitter, 70% of surveyed users expect a response from brands, and 53% want that response in under an hour. Brands that don’t respond actually hurt their brand reputation. Facebook is also encouraging faster responses by giving brands who respond to 90% of messages within 5 minutes a “very responsive” icon on their pages.
While you may have a slightly longer grace period for brand comments (like on Facebook or Instagram), when people are reaching out to you directly on an account, they are doing it because they want a rapid response.
Check out this handy guide to learn how to monitor your social media effectively.
5) What is the plan for content planning/creating?
This may be the most time-consuming part of your social strategy, but some (myself included) would say it’s the most important. Content is what will keep your social channel front of mind, and it’s also what will bring in the views, interactions, and leads. Suffice to say, when creating a channel you should have a plan for sustained content creation.
When thinking about your new social channel, consider where you will be getting the material and how you’ll be able to sustain this to create multiple posts a week. Remember, this content should also serve a unique function from your existing accounts.
6) How many posts/week am I able to commit to this account?
Posting consistency is key. Once you have a content plan, be sure that you’re able to keep up a consistent posting schedule as well. After all, your accounts aren’t doing much for you if you’re not posting from them. Dormant accounts also can give off the impression that you don’t care, or can’t commit to brand followers.
Exactly how often you post is dependent on network and industry, but you should plan to have at least 1-2 Facebook posts a week, and 4-5 on Twitter (if not more). For some of the quieter networks with less links to click (think: Snapchat, Instagram, etc.), you can manage posting a couple of times a month, rather than weekly.

7) Do I have budget to help build/scale this account?
Money talks on social media. This is an unfortunate truth we are seeing more and more often. While you don’t really need budget to build out an account, a little spend can go a long way for boosting posts or putting yourself in front of new followers — especially on algorithm-dependent networks such as Facebook.
If you choose to put your money behind advertising in social, watch it carefully. Define goals beforehand, and put it into a network that is really worthwhile for you. Each network has a slightly different way of handling paid advertising. For more on how to navigate paid social advertising, check out this free guide or click on any of the respective links below:
(Note: Snapchat ads can be quite expensive. You may want to consider an on-demand geofilter instead).
8) What is the goal of this account? How will I know if it’s successful?
When you’re launching any initiative it’s important to know what value it will bring you, how you know you should double down on your efforts, or when you may want to cut and run.
Whether your success is measured in leads, applicants, or share of voice, knowing your goals can help you prioritize your time and report your wins back to your team more effectively.
9) Why is time spent on this social account more valuable than time spent doing these other things?
If you’re feeling good about the questions above, you’ve hopefully determined that creating a new social account will take you a healthy (but totally worthwhile) amount of time. Now you have to ask yourself: Am I best spending my time creating content for this specific channel, or should I consider other marketing tactics (running experiments, optimizing emails, hosting events, etc.)?
At the end of the day, it comes down to you and your team. Specifically, to whether or not you can create and sustain a new account to a degree that feels worthwhile to your company. If these questions have you planning a run for the hills, perhaps a new account is not the right fit. At least not right now. On the other hand, if they have you feeling excited about the content you’ll post with this account, or the goals you’ll be trying to hit, sounds like you have some creating to do.

How to Stay Focused in the Age of Distractions [Infographic]
While most of those “survivalist” reality TV shows — like Survivor and Naked and Afraid — send contestants to exotic, tropical locations, the producers of those shows are really missing out on an exceptionally chaotic destination: the office.
True, in the office you don’t have to worry about building a shelter (that’s usually provided) or getting swallowed whole by an anaconda, but there are other dangers office workers have to face. And one of the most intimidating? The dreaded distraction.
Tweets. Facebook messages. Texts. Snapchats. That annoying coworker who is always bugging you with their personal problems (for the last time, Tyler, I don’t care that your cat has eczema). Office distractions are everywhere. But in addition to being annoying, they can wreak havoc on our productivity. Fortunately, the team at On Stride Financial created the infographic below, which offers several tips and tricks for dealing with distractions.
