Online Apple Store now has category for accessibility accessories, confirming earlier rumors
As rumored late last year, Apple has now added a dedicated accessibility accessories category to its online store. As Amvsement noted, Apple currently offers a total of 15 products, addressing the three areas of vision, physical & motor skills, and learning & literacy.
For those who are blind or partially sighted, Apple offers two different braille displays which serve as both screen-readers and control keyboards. For those with motor skills impairment, products include an over-sized trackball and a wide variety of switches to trigger functions on a Mac or iOS device. Devices for learning disabilities include a ‘tactile musical interface’ to provide a fun way to create music …

LAPD successfully hacked a locked iPhone 5s during time FBI said it couldn’t access 5c
LAPD detectives have successfully hacked into a locked iPhone 5s despite the phone having a Secure Enclave, according to an LA Times report.
Los Angeles police investigators obtained a method to open the locked iPhone belonging to the slain wife of “The Shield” actor Michael Jace, according to court papers reviewed by The Times.
LAPD detectives found an alternative way to bypass the security features on the white iPhone 5S belonging to April Jace, whom the actor is accused of killing at their South L.A. home in 2014, according to a search warrant filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court.
More intriguingly still, this appears to have occurred during the time that the FBI was still demanding that Apple help it unlock the less secure iPhone 5c in the San Bernardino shooting case …

33 Little Ways to Improve Your Nonverbal Communication Skills [Infographic]
As famed dancer and choreographer Martha Graham one said, “The body never lies.” And it turns out that this is as true in an office or boardroom as it is on a stage or dance floor.
Whether you realize it or not, your posture, your mannerisms, even how close you stand to someone can communicate something to the people around you. And yet, many of us don’t give a second thought to what our bodies are doing when we communicate — we’re too focused on what we’re saying.
But as an observer, you’ve likely noticed that when someone is saying one thing, but their body language seems to be saying another (e.g., when your boss says “that’s a great idea!” while sporting a frown and a furrowed brow) there’s often a breakdown in communication. To help you avoid such communication breakdowns, the team at Ethos3 put together the infographic below. Check out their 33 tips for mastering nonverbal communication.

Apple will appeal loss of iPhone trademark rights at China’s highest court
In a statement, Apple has said that it will appeal a Chinese trademark ruling which saw the company lose exclusive rights to the iPhone name, allowing other Chinese companies to use the name for leather goods products. Obviously, the iPhone is Apple’s cash cow so the initial ruling was a big blow allowing legal dilution of its most-valuable brand.
Apple will take the appeal to the Supreme People’s court, the highest court in the Chinese law system …

Apple Music’s fall iOS 10 overhaul detailed: black & white UI, ‘huge artwork’, lyrics integration
Nearly a year after Apple Music’s debut, Apple is preparing to announce its streaming music service’s first end-to-end overhaul, according to multiple sources familiar with the changes. The changes are expected to be shown off at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in mid-June, and Apple currently plans to launch the updated service across its product lines that currently support Apple Music this fall as part of new operating system versions.
The updated version of Apple Music has been in the Apple product development pipeline since the end of last year, and work in earnest on the updated service began at the end of February, according to sources.

Apple loses market leadership to Samsung as number one smartphone OEM in the US
In the middle of seemingly stalling profits and a general slowdown of the smartphone industry — like Apple‘s notable first quarter of YoY growth drop in years — Samsung seems to be enjoying a moment of sunshine bathing.
Eleven months after losing the leadership to the Cupertino giant, the Korean manufacturer has climbed once again to the top of the US vendors’ list, as per a Counterpoint Research report (via Business Korea)…

Moog brings its classic $10,000 Model 15 synth to iPad and iPhone w/ new $30 app
Moog Music has been known for producing some of the most popular synthesizers since the 70s— we reviewed a couple of the newer models in our Logic Pros series and noted that iPad/Mac synths still can’t quite capture the experience of even a $1,000 Moog. But today Moog is releasing its own iPad and iPhone version of its popular $10,000 Model 15, aiming to offer a similar experience in a $30 mobile app.
Moog’s own techs helped program the app at the Moog Factory in Asheville, NC, according to the company, with the app both resembling the look and sound of the original 1970’s Model 15 hardware:

What will Tim Cook’s ‘can’t live without’ new feature for iPhone 7 be?
In a TV interview with CNBC’s Jim Cramer this week, Cook said the iPhone 7 will have a killer feature that would prove to be an upgrade customers won’t be able to resist.
Could it really be something we already know about? Could any of the rumored features for the device possibly fall under the groundbreaking or irresistible category of features Cook hinted at? Could the new rumoured dual-camera system be enough to account for Cook’s comment, perhaps? Of course, it’s also possible it’s all just post-Q2 PR hype after a quarter of declines. Will Apple have something new and exciting that we don’t yet know about for the iPhone 7?
That’s the question we ask readers in today’s poll. What rumoured new feature for iPhone 7 will make it upgrade worthy for you? Or will Tim Cook and Co need something beyond what’s expected to get upgrade numbers it didn’t get in 2015 with the 6s update and this year with the iPhone SE? more…

Site News: Let’s Disqus commenting
After a lot of deliberation we’ve hit the switch and moved our commenting system to the much-requested Disqus today. How did we get here?
Since we moved to WordPress VIP a few years ago, we’ve been using WordPress built-in comments for a number of reasons:
- Speed. Comments load instantly even on mobile.
- Integrated comments become part of the story
- It is quicker/easier to mod 1 system rather than 2. We comment on our stories with the same account as our author accounts
- A bunch of other little things
Unfortunately, that’s where the love story with WordPress comments kind of ends. Automattic, the company that runs WordPress, almost never updates their commenting system – and from what we’ve heard, no big updates are coming.
Meanwhile other commenting systems are evolving with great features like voting, lots of nesting, cross site promotions, excellent mod tools and other features that make commenting much better than the WordPress default. Of the big commenting systems, Disqus feels like the best out there and is certainly the most requested by our readers. We spent a lot of time and ‘intense debate’ on the decision, which is why it took such a long time.
So here we are.
If for some reason you aren’t already signed up, get a Disqus account and meet us in the comments!
(All of the old post comments will remain open and on WordPress comments. Moving forward, all new posts will be Disqus.)

Department store Kohl’s first retailer to integrate Apple Pay with rewards points
Apple Pay may be a convenient, one-tap method of paying for your purchases – but not if you want to collect rewards points at the same time. That has so far always required a separate step, usually using the store’s own app.
Department store Kohl’s has just announced that it has partially solved the problem, allowing Yes2You Rewards points to be accrued just by using Apple Pay – but there is one small catch …
