Tim Cook Memo: Apple launches RSU shares program for all employees to retain talent
Apple today announced a significant new initiative internally for employees that “effectively [makes] everyone who works for Apple eligible for an RSU grant.” RSU grants, or Restricted Stock Units, have typically been reserved for top Apple management and product engineering roles as a way to retain employee talent for long periods of time. For example, Apple CEO Tim Cook was granted 1 million shares in 2011, following the succession of Steve Jobs, that will vest over time through 2021. According to an email from Cook to all employees today, a similar plan, with obviously much smaller amounts of shares, is now starting:
Team,
I’m writing you today to announce a new stock ownership program for employees.
For many years, we have offered people across the company the opportunity to become shareholders in Apple by participating in the Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP), which makes Apple stock available at a discount that’s exclusive to our employees. Many of you have taken advantage of this program, and I am told we have one of the highest participation rates of any company offering employee stock purchase plans.
In addition to the ESPP, employees in certain roles have been eligible to receive restricted stock units. Each year, the management team recommends eligible employees — typically from our product areas — to receive RSUs as an incentive to continue their important contributions to Apple. Each grant is approved by the Board of Directors.
This year, I’m excited to let you know that the Executive Team has created a new program for stock ownership through RSU grants. It’s designed to reach employees who were not previously eligible, including many in our amazing retail and AppleCare teams.
This new program extends eligibility to everyone not covered by other RSU programs, effectively making everyone who works at Apple eligible for an RSU grant. This is an unusual step, and very special — just like our team.
Please check HRWeb for details on this new program.
At Apple, our most important resource — our soul — is our people. Along with our many progressive benefit plans, this is another way for us to say thanks. On behalf of the Executive Team, I’d like to thank you for your many contributions to Apple. Working with all of you is the privilege of a lifetime.
Best,
Tim
Notably, these shares will serve as a significant bonus to both retail and AppleCare employees in addition to people working in Apple’s corporate divisions. Sources in Apple Retail say that RSU awards began being distributed to employees today, with initial grants ranging from $1000 to $2000 worth of shares. These amounts will likely increase based on the amount of time with the company, position, and assigned project. As Cook notes in his email, this type of program is not typically offered by major corporations, and it is clear that the company is going out of its way to retain employee talent.

iPhone 6s Plus vs Galaxy Note 5: Camera Comparison [Video]
Today we’re getting into the ultimate camera battle between Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 and Apple’s iPhone 6s Plus. These are without a doubt packing the best camera sensors in mobile right now, but which one will take the throne as 2015’s best smartphone camera? We’ll be taking a look at pictures and video from both devices to find out…
On the iPhone 6s Plus we have a 12-megapixel sensor, dual-tone flash, and optical image stabilization, with the ability to shoot up to 4K video at 30 frames per second. With the Galaxy Note 5, we have a setup that was first launched with the Galaxy S6. There’s a 16-megapixel sensor, LED flash, optical image stabilization, and 4K video recording up to 30 frames per second.
As far as camera software goes, I tend to prefer the simplicity of the Camera app in iOS and the streamlined layout, but it definitely lacks some features when compared to Samsung’s Camera app on Android. On the Note 5, there’s a much more intimidating experience for some people, but Samsung has toned things down a lot over the years and there’s even a full on manual mode for photos that can come in pretty handy if you know what you’re doing with things like ISO, shutter speed, and white balance.
Check out our camera comparison video below:
We’re going to break this comparison down into a few simple categories: Daylight photos, low light photos, and 4K video quality. We’ll also go through an optical image stabilization test as well near the end if that interests you. Anyway, enough talking about the cameras, let’s put them to the test. Also, if you’re curious about the skins I’m using, you can find them here. Check out the above video and gallery below for photo and video samples from each device.
iPhone 6s Plus Gallery:
Galaxy Note 5 Gallery:
It’s pretty clear that Samsung sharpens and saturates the Note 5’s photos, but because of this you get something that’s ready to go out of the box. On the iPhone 6s Plus, the pictures are still good, but not nearly as polished. And in my testing, the colors (while saturated more) seemed more accurate on the Note 5 than the iPhone 6s Plus. Daylight photos from the Note 5 just look better overall, but the iPhone 6s Plus kills it low light performance.
Under less than average lighting conditions, the Note 5 pictures tend to fall apart. Apple’s new sensor in the 6s Plus works very well with low light photography. I still think that the Note 5 reproduces colors better, but in terms of quality, the iPhone 6s Plus wins all around in low light.
When it comes to 4K video recording, I have to give the win to Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5. They’ve been working on UHD video recording much longer than Apple and it definitely shows. That’s not to say that the footage on the iPhone 6s Plus is bad, it’s just not as crispy. Apple’s iPhone 6s Plus also destroys the Note 5 when it comes to video stabilization. Take a look at the comparison video above to see for yourself though.
Either way, both of these cameras are great to have, but I personally prefer majority of the results from the Note 5. Though if I’m in a low light setting, the iPhone 6s Plus would be good camera to have around. Which camera do you prefer? Let us know with a comment below.

August launching upgraded Smart Lock that works with Siri through HomeKit
Apple’s HomeKit platform for connected accessories around the house has been steadily expanding over the last few months, and today August is adding to it with a new version of its Smart Lock. Revealed today, the new HomeKit-enabled August Smart Lock is an upgraded version of the Bluetooth-connected door lock that first launched last year. HomeKit compatibility means you can use the Siri virtual assistant on iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch to lock or unlock August Smart Lock using voice commands. Working with Apple’s smart home platform also means Smart Lock can be a part of commands like “Goodnight” that turn off connected lights, lock the front door, and lower the temperature.
For example, Philips Hue lights recently shipped with an upgraded HomeKit-compatible bridge and Ecobee 3’s smart thermostat works with Siri commands. HomeKit lets you use voice commands to set each of these accessories to preferred modes with one command. Siri can also tell you the status of August Smart Lock in case you worry you forgot to lock the door or left it unlocked for someone.
Aside from HomeKit support, August says its new Smart Lock features a “modified industrial design with a magnetic faceplate, new micro-patterns to improve grip and rotation of the lock, and a slim, chrome indicator at the top of the device so people can visually see if it is locked or unlocked.”
In addition to the upgraded August Smart Lock with HomeKit support, August is expanding its lineup with a new August Smart Keypad and August Doorbell Cam.
Smart Keypad lets anyone unlock Smart Lock using a passcode when keys and smartphones aren’t available. Smart Keypad also works with one-time auto-generated codes that act as temporary keys. August says its battery-powered and can be installed in about 10 minutes.
Doorbell Cam is both Bluetooth Low Energy and Wi-Fi-enabled and lets you remotely check in with your front door using a “one-way, 140 degree HD video camera and two-way audio” for security. Motion detection automatically captures visitors, and August’s app can be used to livestream any activity. Doorbell Cam owners can receive alerts when activity is detected and communicate with visitors through audio and even buzz in people.
August also announced a new platform called August Connect, which will let partners Sears, Postmates, Doorman, and others work with August Smart Lock in different ways. The new platform launches in beta today.
Customers can pre-order August Smart Lock with HomeKit ($229), Smart Keypad ($79), and Doorbell Cam ($199) from Amazon, Best Buy, and August.com. Apple Stores will carry the new hardware once available. Not interested in HomeKit? The original August Smart Lock now goes for $199.

Google Translate adds iPad Split View, printed text translations for more languages
Google is rolling out a couple notable updates to its Google Translate apps that adds additional languages for translations of printed text and support for the new Split View app mode on iPads.
Using Google Translate’s instant visual translation feature, users can tap into their mobile device’s camera to translate printed text. With this month’s update, Google adds support for translating printed text in English or German into Arabic, something that was already available for the apps other translations features including conversation mode and text input model.
For iPad users, Google Translate is adding support for Apple’s new Split View feature that allows side-by-side use of apps on newer iPads with iOS 9.
So if you’re sending an email or text and need to translate, you can see both apps at the same time. And it even works with text from online books or websites.
And this is how it looks in action on the iPad:
The new features will be rolling out to mobile app users in the coming weeks.

Apple delays launch of iPhone 6s in Turkey due to recent terror attack
While the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus was scheduled to arrive in 40+ more countries for Apple’s second wave launch this month, the company is delaying sales of the device in one of those countries, Turkey, due to recent terror attack that killed 97 people in the country’s capital Ankara. Apple confirmed that sales of the device would be delayed in an email to partners in the country that was obtained by appletoolbox.com.
Rather than launching alongside the 40+ other second wave launch countries this month, Turkey’s planned launch date of October 16 will be pushed back until further notice, according to Apple’s email. Its website is now advertising a launch date of October 23 in the country, but it’s unclear if that date will be pushed back further due to the unexpected delay.
Earlier this week Apple CEO Tim Cook sent out a message through his Twitter account offering his “prayers, condolences, and hope for all this affected by the bombings in Turkey.”
In its email to partners, Apple said it’s working hard to launch the device in Turkey and will let retailers know when a new launch date is available.

Apple clarifies how Wi-Fi Assist handles cellular data usage in iOS 9
Buried deep in the Cellular section of the Settings app in iOS 9 is a new networking feature called Wi-Fi Assist that lets your iPhone use cellular data over Wi-Fi during poor connectivity. Intended to remedy those times when your iPhone gets stuck trying to load data on a weak Wi-Fi connection due to range or other issues, Wi-Fi Assist raised a concern for many iPhone users on tiered data plans after iOS 9 was released.
The feature is turned on by default, so users could mistakenly eat up expensive data on a weak Wi-Fi network without realizing cellular data was being used. Addressing concerns that have been raised over iOS 9’s Wi-Fi Assist feature, Apple issued a new support document this week that details how the feature handles certain situations (via Six Colors):
Wi-Fi Assist will not automatically switch to cellular if you’re data roaming.
Wi-Fi Assist only works when you have apps running in the foreground and doesn’t activate with background downloading of content.
Wi-Fi Assist doesn’t activate with some third-party apps that stream audio or video, or download attachments, like an email app, as they might use large amounts of data.
While Apple acknowledges that Wi-Fi Assist may use “a small percentage higher” amount of data for most users, it clarifies that the status bar will signal the change between Wi-Fi to cellular connectivity. Apple also mentions that Wi-Fi Assist works with most (but presumably not all) apps including Safari, Apple Music, and Maps, which can potentially be data heavy.
Wi-Fi Assist can be managed under Settings > Cellular > Wi-Fi Assist.

AT&T unveils NumberSync, a network-level feature for sharing your phone number with connected devices
Apple has been building Continuity features into its software that let you make phone calls and send messages from iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches through your iPhone for a while now, and today AT&T is announcing a new network-level advancement called NumberSync capable of doing that for all connected devices.
With NumberSync, AT&T customers will soon be able to use what’s called mobile twinning to share a single phone number with multiple SIM cards in smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and other connected devices. The goal is to let you send and receive phone calls or messages from all your connected devices without relying on a specific app or operating system feature.
NumberSync won’t immediately benefit iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch customers, but it is an advancement that prepares AT&T’s network for what many consider just a matter of time: Apple Watches with built-in cellular connections and possibly one day cars.
Even before Apple Watches become untethered from iPhones, AT&T’s NumberSync feature will soon be able to benefit other smartwatches that already ship with SIM cards but have their own phone numbers for making phone calls and handling messages.
NumberSync won’t require smartphones to be on a Wi-Fi network, connected via Bluetooth, or even powered on for other connected devices to work with your real phone number. This also unifies your voicemail inbox to one phone number if you miss or can’t take calls.
As for availability, AT&T says its focused on supporting NumberSync through an ecosystem of devices with the first supported device expected soon and more to follow before the end of the year.

T-Mobile brings back its 4 for $120, 10GB-per-line deal
T-Mobile is bringing back one of its most popular promotions by — once again — offering four 10GB data lines for $120 total. The offer is available for a limited time from today, and is ideal for data-hungry families needing multiple lines. With no overages, you know exactly what your bill’s going to be every month too.
If you don’t need four lines, you can get two 10GB lines at $50 each:
With #10Gigs4All, two people can get up to 10 GB of 4G LTE each – no sharing required – for just $100 a month. Then, each additional line is just $20 more per person – also with 10 GB of T-Mobile’s blazing-fast 4G LTE. Now, with this promotion, that 4th line is free, bringing the total cost to just $120 per month for a family of four.
As with every Simple Choice plan, customers signing up get access to a host of awesome offers including rollover data for up to 12 months, Wi-Fi calling, unlimited music streaming and unlimited in-flight texting with GoGo. Customers also get unlimited calls to and from Mexico and Canada, as well as the ability to use 4G LTE data from their plan allowances in those countries, unlimited data and texts in 140 countries abroad and unlimited international texts from the US. Compared to the other three carrier options, it looks a fantastic deal:
This news comes just weeks after the carrier announced some killer iPhone deals, where customers were offered the new iPhones for $5 per month if they trade in their old ones.

Mini-review: Flyshark, the pocketable folding Bluetooth Smart keyboard made from 7000-series aluminum
Apple was the first company to create a touchscreen keyboard I considered usable. Nothing prior to the iPhone even came close, which is why in those days I stuck to phones with physical keyboards.
Even today, though, I still have a strong preference for the real thing. My iPad is usually accompanied by my Brydge keyboard, but what about those whose iPhone is their primary device when out and about?
Cam reviewed one option – the Microsoft Universal Foldable Keyboard – and now there’s an even smaller and cheaper option on the way: the Flyshark 2. The company first launched a version of this a year ago, and currently has a Kickstarter campaign running for an improved version. It’s fully-funded, with 10 days to go, and I’ve been testing a prototype version with my iPhone 6s …
Size, look & feel
The key benefit of the Flyshark is that it’s small – really small. In its folded state, it’s just 130mm wide, 75mm deep and 13mm thick. That’s a little wider, and a little shorter, than the iPhone 6s.
It’s thicker, as you might expect, but it is still genuinely pocket-sized, and weighs just 150g.
The aluminium used is 7000-series – the same as used in the iPhone 6s – which is all about combining strength and lightness. The finish does have a slightly industrial look, and it has plastic hinges. Overall, I’d say the look is neutral – it isn’t going to be mistaken for an Apple product, but neither does it look cheap and nasty.
It’s Smart Bluetooth, so should offer decent battery-life. Actual life will of course depend on usage; the company says the standby time is up to a year. Treat ‘up to ‘ with the usual skepticism, but in my experience, Bluetooth keyboard batteries last for ages.
In use
Like the Microsoft keyboard, and LG’s Rolly (which is a neat idea but not really pocket-sized), the Flyshark 2 offers proper moving keys. The amount of movement in the keys is somewhere between a MacBook Air/Pro keyboard and the (non-Magic) Apple Wireless Keyboard.
In use, it feels a little cheaper and ‘looser’ than Apple’s keyboards, and I found I wasn’t quite as accurate using it. The keyboard is, without doubt, a compromise compared to anything full-sized, but that’s not too great a surprise.
Trying to persuade a folding keyboard to sit completely flat on a table when it has a hinge in the center is something the company spent a lot of time figuring out, and they got 99% of the way there. It wobbles perhaps half a millimeter as you type. Personally, I found it very slightly annoying, but I was still impressed how near-flat they’d got it.
The keyboard automatically switches on and re-pairs with the last-used device as soon as you open it, switching off when you close it which makes it extremely convenient to use. It does, though, take a couple of seconds to switch off, and I found I got about ten gibberish characters ‘typed’ by the keyboard each time I closed it.
Conclusions
If you want a keyboard for use with an iPad, I would highly recommend getting a full-sized one (for iPad-sized values of ‘full size’). I was impressed with both the ClamCase Pro and Brydge keyboards, and there’s no real advantage to anything smaller than the iPad itself. Some people also carry an Apple Wireless Keyboard, which is obviously bulkier but a delight to use.
But if you don’t want to carry an iPad around and still want to do a lot of typing on your iPhone, I’d say the Flyshark 2 is a decent compromise. It doesn’t match the typing experience of a larger keyboard any more than the Microsoft keyboard does, but the difference between this and the on-screen keyboard is night-and-day. If you want to improve your iPhone typing experience while retaining pocket-level portability, the Flyshark 2 may well be the answer.
The Flyshark 2 can be pre-ordered on Kickstarter from $46, with shipping estimated for November. It’s available in a range of colors.

Apple expands social media presence with new @AppleMusicHelp Twitter account to answer support questions
Apple is continuing to expand its presence on social media services, today launching a brand new @AppleMusicHelp Twitter account to answer queries and support questions live over Twitter related to its Apple Music service. The account is manned each day of the week from 6 AM – 8 PM Pacific Time. Apple representatives will watch the account’s mentions timeline and try to help resolve people’s problems. The service is completely free, but the account will only help with Apple Music-specific questions. The company directs customers to the normal support pages for information or help with other Apple products.
Apple has been slowly ramping its outreach on social media and has grown considerably with the launch of Apple Music. For example, it recently began posting promotional photos on the company’s first official Snapchat account. In fact, the main Beats 1 scheduling page is actually hosted on Tumblr. It also recently launched the @AppStoreGames Twitter account to promote games for its platforms. The new @AppleMusicHelp account is likely taking a page out of Beats Music’s playbook, which featured @BeatsMusicHelp on Twitter.
Apple employees, including executives, have also been more open about posting on social media in recent months. Apple SVP Marketing Philip Schiller regularly links to positive Apple articles in the tech blogosphere and Eddy Cue was even responding to feature requests ahead of iOS 9.
That being said, Apple still lacks its own official company account. The company likely holds the @Apple handle itself but it remains inactive and dormant for the time being.

Video: Apple’s Lightning-equipped Magic Mouse 2 gets unboxed and reviewed
Just as we expected, Apple unveiled a new family of Mac accessories yesterday including the new Magic Mouse 2 alongside updated 5K 27″ iMacs and the first 4K 21.5″ iMacs. YouTuber DetroitBORG managed to pick up Apple’s latest Bluetooth mouse on day one, giving it the full unboxing and review treatment.
Similar to Apple’s other accessories including iPhone cases, the packaging for the Magic Mouse 2 has changed since the last generation. A larger, mostly white box featuring Magic Mouse 2 graphics replaces the smaller, clear plastic packaging from the original Magic Mouse. Anyone who has ever opened the first Magic Mouse knows how tricky the old packaging could be to get through.
The headlining change between the first Magic Mouse and Magic Mouse 2, of course, is the built-in rechargeable battery versus AA slots that needed replaced frequently. Magic Mouse 2 charges using the same Lightning cable as iPhones and iPads so Apple includes the cable in the box.
While the overall design and gestures are left mostly unchanged save for tweaked runners along the bottom, Magic Mouse 2 does feature a handy pairing method to Macs on OS X El Capitan. DetroitBORG demonstrates the new plug-and-pair feature in the video.
And while Magic Mouse 2 is said to charge up for 9 hours of use in about 2 minutes and about a month’s worth of use in just a couple hours, the Lightning port’s placement on the bottom does rule out using Magic Mouse 2 at all while charging. As demonstrated in the video, though, Apple’s new Lightning Dock intended for iPhones makes for a handy Magic Mouse 2 dock as well.
Magic Mouse 2 is available for $79, which is $10 more than the original Magic Mouse which didn’t include a Lightning cable and a built-in rechargeable battery. Magic Mouse 2 also comes standard with every new iMac (the $129 Magic Trackpad 2 is not an upgrade option; only a separate purchase).

Two key Apple suppliers fighting for control of Taiwanese chip company – billions at stake, say analysts
The WSJ reports that Foxconn and the world’s largest chip assembler, Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE), are fighting for control of the number three company in the chip assembly business, SPIL. ASE assembles chips used in the Apple Watch, while SPIL last year started supplying chips for iPhones.
ASE had planned to take a controlling interest in SPIL in order to protect its market-leading position and remain one jump ahead of competitors. Key iPhone assembly company Foxconn, however, persuaded the company that it would do better by collaborating with the Chinese firm in order to win more of Apple’s business.
SPIL shareholders will vote on the proposed deal with Foxconn tomorrow. Although ASE had already bought some shares in the company, it did so too late to qualify for vote, so has instead sent a letter to other SPIL shareholders urging them to vote against the motion.
All three companies are competing for system-in-package (SiP) orders from Apple, which analysts say will be worth billions of dollars.
There is huge competition for Apple’s business among chip manufacturers and assemblers, with Apple reportedly playing off Samsung and TSMC against each other in order to squeeze out last-minute price cuts for the A9 chip. Samsung’s recent return to profit was attributed to the chips it supplies to Apple.
