GarageBand 2.3 adds new Sound Library, Beat Sequencer, Instruments, iPhone X support & more

We are getting a major update to Apple’s free iOS music production suite today. GarageBand was already considered to be one of, if not the best, DAW’s available to mobile music makers, and now it’s getting even better. With today’s update, Apple is focusing almost solely on content and we couldn’t be happier. While there are enhancements and minor improvements across the board here, it’s all about new sounds, instruments, beat creation and making sure it all fits perfectly on the edge-to-edge iPhone X Super Retina display.

We’ve had some time to play with all the new features as well as some hands-on time with the new Moog Model 15 synth AU integration. Head below for more details on everything new to GarageBand 2.3 for iOS… more…

iPhone X Face ID versus Touch ID — which is faster?

There are key differences between Face ID on the iPhone X and Touch ID on other devices — facial recognition doesn’t care if you have wet fingers or gloves, while finger print recognition doesn’t worry about you wearing a ski mask — but which is faster? Early reviews put Face ID speed somewhere between Touch ID 1 and Touch ID 2, and Tom’s Guide has tested both and recorded the numbers. Touch ID beats Face ID in terms of speed, but there are a few things you can do to speed up the process.

Polish retailer listing suggests AirPower could be priced at $199

Apple now supports wireless charging with the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, but it isn’t selling its own charging pad yet. Instead, Apple Stores offer charging pads that support the Qi standard from Belkin and Mophie, each priced at $59.99.

The company did preview AirPower which it will start selling sometime next year, but the official release date and price are still unknown. Now a Polish retailer has published an online listing for AirPower which could give us a clue about how much we’ll have to pay for the special charging pad.

In unusual step, Apple touts positive comments from early iPhone X reviews

Apple has just issued a press release rounding up some positive comments from early reviewers of the iPhone X. This is an unusual step from the company, which is taking a different tack to reviews of this year’s flagship phone.

The press release has brief quotes from reviews by Buzzfeed, CNET, Creative Live Blog, the Evening Standard, Mashable, TechCrunch and the Wall Street Journal

Apple’s Irish data center saga may finally be over as local residents’ appeal rejected

After more than two years and numerous false-starts, it appears that Apple has now cleared the final hurdle standing in the way of building a $1B data center in Ireland. A bid by two local residents to pursue a High Court appeal has been refused.

Objections by a small number of local residents delayed things from the start, with the local planning body responding by asking Apple to respond to five concerns

IKEA finally adds HomeKit support to its Tradfri smart lighting range

After a few false starts, IKEA has finally added HomeKit integration to its Tradfri smart light range. For owners of Tradfri smart bulb accessories, you can now update your hub firmware and get the latest version of the Tradfri app from the App Store.

This allows you to generate a HomeKit code for your existing accessories and add them using the Apple Home app. You can then control the devices like any other HomeKit accessory, including Siri voice control.

Comment: I suspect Apple limits Face ID to one person because it would otherwise be too slow

One thing really jumped out at me yesterday reading Mashable’s early review of the iPhone X, and that was Apple’s response to a query by Lance Unlanoff.

One important limitation of Face ID: It only lets you register one face. That may strike many as unnecessarily limiting since Touch ID lets users register up to 10 [sic] fingerprints, but Apple says it found the number of people who register more than one person’s fingerprints is miniscule.

The idea that hardly anyone registers more than one person’s fingerprint didn’t ring true to me, and our poll shows that it’s not true for 9to5Mac users at least …
