iOS 10 How-To: Print to PDF from anywhere in iOS using 3D Touch
One of the few gripes I have with 3D Touch is that it’s not explicitly clear when you can use it throughout iOS to bring up more options. With iOS 10, 3D Touch has gained even more functionality, yet people are still discovering functionality that has seemingly been there, in some form, since iOS 9.
Something I’ve found myself having to do a lot recently is export various documents and webpages as PDFs. My process has always been to export the document into GoodNotes 4 and then share it via email or another method. Recently, however, a Reddit user pointed out that by using 3D Touch, this process is significantly easier…

iPhone 7 outlasts Galaxy S7 in 35-feet of water, gets dropped from a helicopter [Video]
Earlier today, we shared a pair of durability tests performed with the new iPhone 7. These tests showed that Apple has improved the durability of the new device compared to the iPhone 6s. Now, EverythingApplePro has conducted a deep water test to see just how far the new iPhone 7 can be submerged in water before it bites the dust, while another video shows the device being dropped from a helicopter. And the results are impressive…

Some iPhone 7 devices making ‘hissing’ sound while under heavy load
As with most new iPhone models, there are bound to be a few launch day issues that emerge, most of which end up being minor in the grand scheme of things. Nevertheless, it’s still interesting to note the various annoyances. Today, some iPhone 7 users have noticed an odd hissing sound coming from their device while putting the new A10 Fusion processor to the test.

Apple responds to campus sexism allegations, says it has investigated & taken action
Seemingly overshadowed by the chaos of iPhone 7 launch week were a pair of articles that highlight an alleged “very toxic atmosphere” at Apple’s Cupertino headquarters. An article from Mic pointed to a variety of instances of alleged sexism and inappropriate behavior.
Now, Recode has sat down with Apple’s head of human resources Denise Young Smith to discuss the issues raised in the article and what Apple is doing to combat them.

iPhone 7 bests iPhone 6s in durability drop test, survives ten foot face-down drop
Apple appears to have improved the durability of the iPhone 7 compared to the iPhone 6s, as highlighted by a new drop test video by EverythingApplePro. The iPhone 7 does very well in this specific test, sustaining ten foot face-down and side drops without cracking the screen. In contrast, the iPhone 6s was completely shattered at drops of five-feet. The iPhone 7’s rear sapphire cover glass (the camera bump) was damaged but the person could still take photos.
Apple makes no claims about drop or shatter performance of course; the waterproofness of the iPhone 7 has already been shown to be of a high-standard.

iPhone 7’s new Home button is rendered useless without skin contact, spelling trouble for winter
One of the changes with the iPhone 7 that has earned mixed reactions thus far is the new Home button. No longer is the iPhone’s Home button an actual button. Instead, a Taptic Engine beneath the display provides the allusion that you’re pressing the button, even though there is no physical part being moved.
Adding fuel to people’s argument that the new “solid state” Home button is a move in the wrong direction, Myke Hurley made the discovery that the new Home button requires physical contact with your skin in order to function at all…

HomeKit remote access and automation no longer works with third-gen Apple TV after iOS 10, 2FA now required
iOS 10 includes a pre-installed Home app from Apple that lets you easily set up and manage smart accessories and automation, which previously required using third-party apps from various developers. There is one important drawback for HomeKit users on iOS 10: you can no longer use the third-generation Apple TV as a hub for automation or remote access.

Comment: This is why Apple was right to hold back on wireless charging for the iPhone
It was yesterday suggested that Apple may be partnering with Energous, developer of a wireless charging technology known as WattApp. The company later issued a statement downplaying the evidence for the partnership, but – notably – without actually denying it.
Either way, it seems pretty clear by now that Apple is indeed waiting for either this or some similar long-distance wireless charging tech, and it is absolutely right to do so.
When I wrote a wish-list for the iPhone 7 back in November of last year, there were five items on it. Apple delivered three of them. But a number of you wondered why wireless charging wasn’t on my list, and I wrote a follow-up piece explaining my reasoning. The tl;dr version is that Apple should hold fire until wireless charging can be done properly – and I pointed directly to the WattApp tech developed by Energous as an example of how to do it right …

Researcher proves that approach rejected by FBI would have accessed San Bernardino iPhone [Video]
When the FBI was still demanding Apple’s help to access a work iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino killers, security firm Trail of Bits wrote a blog post claiming that the phone could be accessed without Apple’s assistance. A Cambridge University researcher has now successfully demonstrated that the method proposed would have worked.

Apple Watch Series 2 teardown reveals secret to waterproofing, beefier battery, 2nd mic
iFixit didn’t waste any time on a teardown of the iPhone 7 Plus, and has now done the same with the new Apple Watch Series 2.
The main discovery is a much higher-capacity battery. The 273mAh battery offers almost a third more capacity than the 205mAh one in the first-gen Watch. However, all that extra power doesn’t extend the battery-life of the device – it’s rated for the same 18 hours as the original – it instead powers the built-in GPS and much brighter screen.
iFixit also identified what seems to be the main secret to the greatly-improved waterproofing of the Series 2 …
