Twitter’s official iOS app gains a highly requested dark theme called ‘night mode’
iPhone and iPad users have long requested that Twitter add a dark mode to its iOS app and today it’s finally happening.
Twitter’s ‘night mode’ feature was introduced earlier this year on Android, and today Twitter shared that the feature is rolling out to iOS as well. Hopefully that means both iPhone and iPad (and add streaming to my feature request list next if so).

Keep in Mind that Fire Safety is a Part of Your Project
For most projects, fire safety matters! Therefore, risk management should include being fully aware of how to create and maintain a fire-safe environment along with managing other risks associated to your project.
For project managers involved in projects where fire safety plays a crucial role in the planning stages, they should encourage improvements and creative thinking. This article highlights some suggestions and ideas for making sure that any of your upcoming project is as efficient as possible in regards to fire safety.
Assess, Assess and Then Assess Some More
First and foremost, you need to carry out a thorough assessment of the building or property. Some business owners will be able to do so by following the correct guidelines online, and being able to establish the minimum requirements that are necessary.
Those who’re unable to carry out a risk assessment on their own will want to seek the help of a fire safety consultant. They’ll guide you through each step of the risk assessment process, showing you how to apply each aspect of fire safety to your specific situation.
You can also call in health and safety experts for a broader, more generalized assessment, which will be extremely beneficial when the time comes to evaluate your project’s overall health and safety compliance.
Once yourself or your fire consultant has concluded the fire risk assessment, you’ll have a better idea of any safety precautions that need to be added and any potential hazards that should be removed. When and only when the risk assessment has been carried out and concluded are you ready to begin the improvements.
Embrace New Technology
With such a wealth of modern technology at your disposal, it would be foolish not to embrace it in any aspect of your work where you’re likely to benefit. This is where you and your team can keep ideas flowing and come up with some efficient and innovative ways of keeping your project safe.
With that being said, business owners are not obligated to use the latest technology. And for some, it may seem like an unnecessary expenditure. But the benefit of using the most advanced tech to maintain safety goes above and beyond a price tag.
When it comes to fire prevention, the benefits of modern technology can provide a sense of security and peace of mind for business owners. Installing fire suppression equipment for detection, and alarms that automatically contact the emergency services are more important now than ever, as many companies these days will have equipment running overnight. In this case, preaction sprinkler systems will go into effect when they detect smoke or an irregular level of heat.
Although fire prevention technology does improve overall fire safety, the use of fire safety equipment provides its own benefits. An example being for companies that have expensive equipment or irreplaceable data on-site, the use of modern tech will extinguish a fire in a quicker and more efficient manner.
Improve Your Safety Knowledge
As a project manager, or being part of a project management team, it’s a huge benefit to get some insight and knowledge from other professionals. And being that the subject matter is safety, some extra knowledge is paramount.
A fire consultant is an invaluable resource in this situation: they can advise you on fire safety aspects that relate to your current project. And can also provide knowledge to apply to future projects.
Safety First!
In any situation where you find yourself working with an idea that includes aspects of fire safety, the key is to try and learn as much as possible about the topic at hand and to make improvements wherever necessary. A building or site full of employees can never be “too safe”, so there’s always room for improvement.

Understanding How to Plan a Project With the Right People
Each project caters to a defined and discerning audience. Therefore, project managers, just like any great musician, must know who they will cater to and communicate with, taking this into consideration when planning a project.
What do you think the reaction of an audience would be if they went to a concert expecting a classical music performance but were instead regaled by the sounds of a popular heavy metal rock band? Or, how do you think an audience would respond if they went for a hip-hop performance and a ballet ensued? Or, how do you think someone would feel if they found out that they had just missed a performance by their most favorite artist? Everyone above would feel confused, disappointed, and let down.
Consider the projects you manage as a performance. You have to orchestrate a number of performers, there’re various phases or acts as your project progresses, and you ultimately want the audience to stand up and cheer at the end of the performance. In your case, the end of the project. That’s why it’s so critical that you have the right audience engaged and involved from the start of a project to the very end. For the success of any project, it’s critical to have the right people.
Here are 9 ways to identify the correct audience before you start planning a project
1. Get a Head Start on Putting your Project Audience List Together
Once you know that you are going to be a project manager, immediately start thinking about who is going to be included. Think about the purpose of your project, its benefits, some of the challenges that may surface, and other nuances of your project. This will help you put together a solid short list of who to involve in the planning of a project. If you are struggling with putting together a list or only ending up with the obvious attendees (i.e. the client or the project sponsor) then dig deeper by asking these people who else to involve.
2. Consider All Phases of Your Project
When you begin planning a project it’s easy to identify those people to involve at the beginning and possibly into the middle of the project. But, keep in mind that as the project continues down its particular path of completion different people will need to be involved at different times. Think through all of who these people will be from beginning to end. For example, who you do you want to involve at the very end of the project when it comes to closing the project or making sure all the legal requirements are met? These people need to be identified so they can be part of the planning process of a project.
3. Dig Down Until You Identify the Right Audience
When you’re planning a project you need to be mindful to dig down until you find exactly the right group, or even person, that you need to involve in the project planning process. For example, you may know that you need to include the marketing department, but exactly which part? The marketing department is responsible for trade shows, print advertising, the website, social media, and many other aspects that make up your company’s marketing efforts. When planning a project, identify the right audience, otherwise, confusion and disappointment may occur.
4. Compile a List of Each Audience Member’s Name and Position
It’s now time to identify each person in the audience by name and position description. A great place to do this is to assemble a spreadsheet that includes the person’s name, department, title, email address, phone number, and even functional manager (you’ll see why this is important in the next step). Putting a list together like this helps you identify your audience and any obvious gaps that need filling.
5. Include Functional Managers as Part of the Audience List
You may wonder why this is necessary when it comes to planning a project since the functional managers are not the ones that will be doing the actual work. It’s important to include them on the list of audience members (even if it’s just another column next to the resources name) for a couple of reasons. First, you want to establish a very good working relationship with them: as typically they’re directly responsible for accessing and scheduling of the resources in their department. Second, if you find that you aren’t getting the cooperation you need from their resources you can solicit the assistance of their functional manager.
6. Include Resource Names for Each Role your Audience Plays
When planning a project and identifying the resources that will help put the plan together, it’s important to include them with each role they play. Let’s say a technical resource has recently moved to the sales department to help out with pre-sales activity. You need to include their input from both their new position and their former position. Include their name twice on the audience list you are compiling.
7. Keep your List Up-to-Date
Resources will come and go throughout the life-cycle of a project. This is especially true if it goes on for months or years. Make sure your audience list stays current with these changes and continues to stay involved in the aspects of planning a project that are relevant for them. What was important from one person’s perspective may mean nothing to the new person that has taken over the position. You need to make sure your audience understands the current performance or you could receive icy stares and dissatisfaction at the end of the project.
8. Speak to as Many People as Possible
Go WAY beyond your comfort zone when it comes to planning a project and involving the right people. Move beyond just your organizational unit. Expand into other disciplines within your company. Open the door to additional groups of people that you typically do not involve in your projects. The more you involve people in the planning process the less likely you’ll miss including someone you should have.
9. Not Sure Whether to Include Someone?
If there is someone that you’re unsure whether or not to include in your project audience, include them. It’s better to err on the side of inclusion than to fall on the side of exclusion. If someone feels they don’t need to be included when you’re planning a project, they will let you know. If someone feels they SHOULD have been included in the planning of a project, they’ll also let you know. Not only will they let you know, but they’ll also let others around them know. That could be your manager, and even upper executives. They may be not happy that they were not able to provide their input on a project.
In Short
Once you have identified all the right people to include when planning a project, begin your discovery sessions with them. These sessions are the following: interviews, workshops, webinars, and other methods of extracting their needs, concerns, risks, and issues. This will pay off dividends as you near the end of your project. Your audience will align 100% with your performance and who knows…you might even end up with a standing ovation!

Apple buys Gliimpse, a startup aiming to create universal electronic health records
Fast Company reports that Apple has acquired Gliimpse, a health startup whose stated aim is to allow any American to pull together a comprehensive picture of their health, which they would be free to share with medical professionals as desired.
Our vision is personalized and shareable medical records for all 317,000,000 Americans.
The acquisition reportedly happened ‘earlier this year.’ While it hasn’t yet been noted on the Gliimpse website, Apple has issued its usual ‘non-denial’ statement that it ‘buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.’
Founder Anil Sethi started out as an Apple engineer back in the late 80s, before becoming a serial entrepreneur after forming and taking public his company Sequoia Software. He said that he formed Gliimpse out of a frustration at the incompatibility of existing Electronic Health Record systems …

CNET provides its report card as Tim Cook reaches fifth anniversary as Apple CEO
Siri will soon pronounce Barbra Streisand’s name correctly after she complained to Tim Cook
Barbra Streisand’s name may be known by many for her world-renowned singing and acting career but it turns out Siri has always pronounced her name incorrectly, since its launch in 2011. In an interview with NPR, Streisand voiced her dissatisfaction about this publicly for the first time. Rather than using the correct soft ‘s’ sound for the middle of her surname, Siri announces her name using a ‘z’ pronunciation.
Apparently, this has bugged the celebrity since Siri launched and she has finally made a stink about it. She called Apple CEO Tim Cook directly and he ‘delightfully’ agreed to update Siri to use the correct pronunciation in a forthcoming update.

ACLU’s principal technologist reacts to NSA hack with the perfect tweet about Apple/FBI battle
It’s just ten days since I pointed to a Microsoft security leak as proof of my point that any iPhone master key created by Apple would inevitably fall into the wrong hands in time – and even more powerful support for that position now exists.
It was revealed last week that powerful hacking tools created by the NSA have been leaked, and are now being auctioned to the highest bidder. Christopher Soghoian, Principal Technologist with the Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project at the American Civil Liberties Union, summarised that argument in a single tweet.

How to ‘Un-Stock’ Your Photography: 8 Examples That’ll Change the Way You Choose Photos
With 46% of marketers reporting that photography is critical to their current marketing and storytelling strategies, it should come as no surprise that quality photos are in high demand.
Trouble is, most commercially available photos on the internet were taken to visualize broad overall concepts rather than concrete messages. That means they can be used in all sorts of campaigns … but also end up looking generic.
Think of all the photos of smiling receptionists and perfectly suited business leaders you’ve come across. These images may compete for attention, but often fail to register, simply because your customers can’t identify with them.
As a marketer, you can cut through the noise by using images that more closely relate to your audience. It’s what we call “real photography” here at EyeEm: Unique captures, delightful moments, and surprising perspectives. Images that are more concrete will resonate with audiences much more powerfully since they show real life rather than staged situations.
To visualize what we mean, we put together a handful of generic images alongside a ‘real’ counterpart sourced from our community of photographers. The proof is in the pictures, but we’ll let you see for yourself …
8 Examples of Authentic Imagery For Your Campaigns
1) Business
When it comes to business-related photos, there’s no shortage of clichés. Rather than deciding on an overly clean, generic image like the one below of the woman holding an “open” sign, dig deeper for something more authentic — something that tells a story.
You’ll notice that our suggestion ties in a more personal side of business by highlighting two people working together on a project. You can see the emotion in the woman’s face, as she uses her hands to explain something to her coworker in a seemingly authentic exchange.

2) Technology
Technology is notoriously hard to visualize, since a concept like “connectivity” is quite abstract. Old-school stock photography usually puts people next to the tech to achieve that connection, but the results are clumsy and constructed. Or worse, they add in a weird futuristic digital overlay like the image below.
Our suggestion is inspired by contemporary social media culture — and it’s more recognizable. It also features soft focus, natural lighting, and it shows a person truly interacting with the technology.

3) Travel
Let’s be honest: When we the last time you went on vacation hoping to come home with a suitcase full of sand? In many cases, travel photos are just plain corny, and they lack the excitement and sense of wonder that comes with exploring new places.
These days, customers’ attention can much more effectively be captured by showing the actual experience of travel, as depicted by our suggestion below. The shot shows the view from a window on an airplane. It captures that thrilling feeling of embarking on a trip — a feeling that many people can easily relate to.

4) Happiness
According to one study, pictures with smiling faces can positively impact conversions. Trouble is, while picturing happiness with a simple smile might have worked in the past, it has long become a tired cliché.
While the image of the four people sharing smiles over coffee feels forced, our suggestion reads more natural, as it radiates a positive emotion while including an interesting element of movement. The image looks like a snapshot, taken in a genuine moment of fun and togetherness.

5) Office
Representing an office by the tools one might (or might not) use there looks incredibly staged. It’s better to show context.
In this case, the image we suggested shows a creative space of a freelancer, with a pleasing color palette to underline the tranquility and focus of the workplace.

6) Phone
Most images of phones show people awkwardly handling them, presenting their devices in a way nobody in real life would. Exhibit A: The image of the suited man awkwardly pointing to his device. It’s odd, staged, and a little confusing.
Now, notice how our suggestion sets the phone apart without making the pose seem unnatural. The person in the image is shown using the phone in a really natural way, and it’s easy to identify with — after all, who doesn’t love taking photos of their pets?
Do This:

7) Productivity
Being productive isn’t about doing many things at once, as the photo on the left suggests — but about focus and a clear sense of what matters. (Check out this free guide for tips on how to be more productive.)
While the stock photo below is just plain creepy, our suggestion shows a woman at work, with her focus being underlined by the headphone she wears. It also uses much softer, natural light to remind the viewer how common this activity is.

8) Leadership
Leadership is all about building trust and establishing credibility. Unfortunately, leadership-inspired photos often miss the mark.
The photo below portrays an artificial and thereby very conventional idea of what leadership looks like. To combat that, we choose an image that while more loosely related to the idea, manages to demonstrate the emotive aspect of leading a team.

How 8 Agencies Are Building Their Brands on Snapchat
When Snapchat first emerged on the scene back in 2011, it was excusable to dismiss the ephemeral photo-sharing platform as just another shiny piece of millennial bait.
But things have changed.
The once niche app has grown into one of the least ignorable social media forces in the industry, wooing marketers with its command of more daily active users than Twitter. But does any of that matter for agencies?
For agencies looking to diversify their reach and prove their digital dexterity in a competitive field, Snapchat has proven to be an unexpectedly valuable tool.
Here we’ll show you how eight marketing agencies are using Snapchat to grow their brands, recruit new talent, and connect with their audiences in a whole new way.
8 of the Best Agency Snapchat Accounts
1) Marcel Worldwide
Username: @marcelagency
When they’re not working on ad campaigns for Uber, Ray-Ban, and Instagram, this Paris-based ad agency can be found snapping up a storm. Their creative use of filters, emojis, and cameos from team members portray their daily office life as anything but dull.
Marcel is perfect proof that running an agency Snapchat account doesn’t require a huge time commitment or tediously polished design. In fact, it’s the playful, behind-the-scenes vibe of their team’s snaps that make them come across as charming and genuine.
2) Giant Spoon
Username: @giant_spoon
Recently named creative agency of the year by MediaPost, it’s no surprise that this marketing strategy team has been a quick and enthusiastic adopter of Snapchat. On their website, they invite fans to follow their account for an eclectic assortment of “intel, faves, trends, rants, and other surprises.”
Since Snapchat’s content isn’t permanent past 24-hours, there’s no need to carefully curate a particular aesthetic. As Giant Spoon shows us, Snapchat is a chance to experiment with odds-and-ends content that might not fit well on any other channel.
Here are a few screen shots of their intern giving a presentation called Millennials: A New Political Paradigm Shift. (Yes, we zoomed in a lot).
3) RPA
Username: @rpa.advertising
RPA‘s Snapchat feed pulls back the curtain on a top marketing agency to reveal the heart and soul of the team behind the scenes.
Their feed lets followers experience the daily grind of the creative team — a low-investment way to show off their agency’s culture and generate interest from job-seekers.
4) ClearPivot
Username: @clearpivot
ClearPivot, a Denver-based inbound marketing agency, takes a decidedly unique approach to Snapchat. Instead of merely sharing glimpses into their office life and culture, they treat the platform like a micro video blog, addressing their audience directly to discuss the latest marketing news and social media hot topics. It’s like having an inbound marketer in your pocket.
4) VaynerMedia
Username: @vaynermedia
This digital agency has made Snapchat central to their social recruiting strategy. They use the platform to highlight their unique culture and draw in potential employees with their commitment to transparency.
“As a company, we’re constantly storytelling for our clients and we mirror that same approach on Snapchat by showcasing what individual employees’ days look like,” said Chief Heart Officer Claude Silver in an interview with Recruiting Social.
Not only does the agency compose compelling snaps of daily life at VaynerMedia, they also directly respond to their followers’ questions for a more engaging experience.

5) Huge
Username: @hugesnaps
Digital agency Huge lets followers tag along for everything from high-profile events to the daily office grind at any of their 14 offices worldwide.
In contrast to the agency’s meticulously polished and curated Instagram presence, their Snapchat Stories feel like a backstage pass to the real action. Other digital agencies should take note: You can’t claim to fully understand a social platform until you’ve proven you can use it effectively yourself.
6) FRED & FARID
Username: @fredfaridgroup
FRED & FARID, the marketing agency behind major campaigns for HP and Balmain, lets employees from their Paris, Shanghai, Beijing, and New York offices share vignettes of their creative endeavors.
Their Snapchat presence gives the big agency a personal touch, inviting followers to experience all the work that goes into an ad campaign first-hand.
7) DigitasLBi
Username: @digitaslbi
How do you make an agency with 40 global offices seem less intimidating and more accessible? Start with a group selfie.
DigitasLBi has found success with their Snapchat account, sharing videos and pictures of daily life to show followers what it’s really like to work at the agency. An added bonus? Letting multiple offices participate in the platform can help boost moral and foster a sense of community.
8) ExtrêmeSensio
Username: @extremesensio
As this French agency proves, you don’t have to be constantly attending events or rubbing shoulders with celebrities to produce an interesting and worthwhile Snapchat presence . Extrême Sensio‘s snaps offer simple, personal glimpses into the agency’s world.
Is your agency on Snapchat? How do you use the social platform to engage your audience and highlight your company?

Apple reportedly among companies that held potential acquisition talks with Lyft
While Apple made a $1 billion investment in Chinese ride-hailing service Didi Chuxing earlier this year, it apparently also held talks with Lyft, another popular car request service, regarding an acquisition. According to a report from the New York Times, Lyft has recently held discussions with handful of companies to discuss a possible acquisition, with Apple being one of them.
