How-To: Use Final Cut Pro X’s move event feature to archive events and save space [Video]

Since the 12″ MacBook is significantly limited when it comes to attaching external peripherals, I generally do all of my editing work in Final Cut Pro X with events stored directly on device. Being that I shoot 99% of our videos in 4K, you can probably imagine how quickly my MacBook’s storage is exhausted.

Needless to say, I’ve become accustomed to archiving events on a bi-weekly basis to save on space. In this hands-on tutorial, I’ll share my easy-to-use workflow for archiving Final Cut Pro X events and media to an external drive. more…

8 Ways to Make Your Communication Trustworthy

Need a simple project management software to manage your team?
Check-out our valuable and unique Top 15 Web Applications 2016.

There is no doubt that communication is essential for any successful project. Communication is one of the most important, if not the single most important, skills in the arsenal of a project manager.

The lack of efficient communication will quickly hinder a project, and for this reason, a project manager’s priority is to ensure trustworthy communication within the team, and between him and the team.

We will discuss how to achieve better communications for your project, and establish a highly positive working environment for your team.

1. Use Apps to Communicate

There are hundreds of project management software (these are the top 15 – in our opinion) available on the internet. Most of them let you organize, track time, set tasks and priorities.

You should not rely too much on project management software, but it is definitively a good addition to your project communication.

You can also consider using tools such as Google Docs for creating customized documents online. Using Google Docs means all team members can participate in creating and sharing documents.

2. Be Accessible and Cooperative

As a project manager, it is your task to give direction throughout the whole project, be there for your team members and make sure they are motivated. However, good communication is much more than giving directions and telling your team members what is expected.

You must be there to actively encourage communication, be there for your team members to provide help and advice. Be accessible, cooperative and visible. Show interest in all aspects of the project, not just the ones concerning your leadership.

Staying in touch with all the challenges is central to good communication. Don’t hesitate to talk with your team members, even when everything is in order.

3. Be Open to Proposals

A critical trait of a good project manager is openness to different ideas and proposals. As a leader, you must show genuine willingness to listen to your team members, as well as superiors, and take into consideration all constructive proposals.

Not only that, you should also encourage an active dialogue within your team, especially regarding new ideas that could serve to improve the project.

This way you raise the overall communication level in your team. The benefits are going to be immediate and will reflect on the effectiveness of your team.

4. Visualize Your Goals

How you communicate project goals with the rest of the team sends a message about your dedication to the project and your communication skills.

Knowing this, it is very important that the goals you have set are clear to all team members. Visually represent the key steps towards ensuring that everyone properly understands the objectives.

A good visual presentation will focus on priorities. Make sure that everyone understands these priorities. Use graphics and statistics as a means to motivate your team members and create a positive working atmosphere.

It also must be stated that the team must have a clear vision of the end result.

5. Inform the Stakeholders

Communication with your stakeholders is certainly not to be overlooked. It is very important to keep your stakeholders informed about all aspects of the project. This includes potential issues, current problems, and dilemmas you might have regarding the project.

You should also communicate your concerns to stakeholders. However, communication with stakeholders might present a problem, especially if the project is large and there’re many parties involved.

You need to outline your communication strategy and adapt to circumstances. Stakeholders might have different expectations and different ways of communicating. So adapt to ensure effective and smooth communication.

6. Stay in Touch With The Audience

Nothing is more important for your project than staying in touch with your target audience. How you will communicate with the audience will depend on the type of project in question. You should keep in mind that it is essential to keep the audience and other parties involved informed about the status of the project and its progress.

Consider using interactive tools such as animations, 3D visuals and videos. It is also a good idea to keep a strong presence on social media networks. Engage your audience by actively encouraging them to participate in the project.

7. Organize Presentations and Conferences

Presentations and conferences are a direct and active communication method. They are important for maintaining regular communication within your team. Make sure it is a positive atmosphere and that everyone actively participates in the discussion. Furthermore, conferences are important when you want to discuss changes to strategies or goals. When communicating with stakeholders, you should consider organizing face-to-face meetings. If that is not possible, video conferences or webinars.

8. Your Presence Is Key

Being there all the time demonstrates your dedication to the project. This means being completely involved: physical, mental and emotional – be a good listener, consistently patient and understanding.

In the End…

Don’t forget that as a project manager, you must inspire.

9-year-old boy gets his hearing back after six years thanks to bone-conduction implant & iPhone app

Apple VP of environment, policy and social initiatives Lisa Jackson has  shared a story via ABC7 News about a nine-year-old boy whose hearing was restored thanks to a new type of bone-conduction hearing aid controlled by a companion iPhone app. Highlighting accessibility and inclusion, Jackson wrote that ‘technology can transform lives [and] 9-year old Joshua is a great example.’

Joshua Gomez started losing his hearing at the age of three, and a succession of surgeries over a five-year period all failed. Conventional hearing-aids couldn’t help with his particular condition, but the Children’s Hearing Center at Stanford finally found a solution …

Muted expectations for next week’s AAPL earnings report, but analysts looking ahead to 2017

Apple has already told investors to expect a substantial year-on-year decline in Q3 earnings when it reveals the numbers next week, so it’s no surprise that analysts are mostly downbeat in their predictions for the quarter. However, there is an optimistic note in most of the analyst notes summarized by Business Insider when it comes to the outlook for 2017 …

Deutsche Bank claims iPhone 7 will ship with Lighting-to-3.5mm dongle, not Lightning EarPods

A Deutsche Bank research note based on supply-chain sources claims that Apple will sell the iPhone 7 with a Lightning-to-audio dongle, rather than providing Lightning headphones, reports Business Insider.

It also suggests that the iPhone 7 Plus will have 3GB of RAM. All of the note’s other predictions echo things we’ve heard many times before: similar design to the 6s; dual cameras on the Plus, improved camera on the standard model; better sound, possibly stereo; better waterproofing; and a touch-sensitive Home button.

Supply-chain sources aren’t always the most reliable source of information on Apple’s plans, as Tim Cook himself has observed, and there are a couple of reasons to treat this report with some suspicion …

Apple retakes ‘world’s favorite company’ title as Google drops out on a technicality

Apple has once more been dubbed the world’s favorite company after last year losing out to Google.

Each year, FutureBrand looks at the world’s 100 largest companies and asks 3,000 consumers and industry professionals to score them on a range of factors, and to explain how they feel about their preferred companies. The two top feelings respondents had toward Apple were passion and admiration. Apple was ranked highly for individuality, authenticity, innovation and thought-leadership.

However, it’s possible that Apple may have retaken the number one slot on a technicality …

How to Add Slide-In Calls-to-Action to Your Blog Posts [Tutorial]

Slide-in_CTAs.jpg

Many blogs — including this one — end each post with a call-to-action that leads to a landing page.

But the question is … are readers noticing your blog’s CTAs?

The problem with static CTAs at the bottom of each blog post is that after a while, visitors learn to tune them out. This isn’t only a problem with your repeat visitors, either — since so many blogs implement this tactic, even your new visitors might be ignoring your “additional content” or “recommended next steps.” Download 50 customizable call-to-action templates here.

To combat this, some blogs have started to implement something called a slide-in CTA. Ideally, this CTA will enter the screen below your sidebar content so it doesn’t cover it. If you don’t have a sidebar, it’ll simply slip right in on the right side once it’s triggered.

giphy_11-1.gif

Pretty cool, right? If you’re interested in testing out this type of CTA on your blog, we’ll walk you through the instructions below. But first, let’s explore some numbers …

Do These Slide-In CTAs Actually Work?

When we first implemented slide-in CTAs on our blog, we decided to run some tests to find out if they we’re actually working.

Over the course of a month, we ran a test where we added these slide-in CTAs to ten of HubSpot’s highest-trafficked blog posts. We compared the slide-in CTA vs. the static CTA at the bottom of each post and looked at three data points:

  • Clickthrough rate (CTR) – What percentage of blog post visitors clicked each CTA?
  • Conversion rate (CVR) – What percentage of the people who clicked ultimately converted on the landing page form?
  • Submissions – How many leads did each CTA ultimately generate?

In this test, the slide-in CTA had a 192% higher CTR and generated 27% more submissions. The number of submissions actually wasn’t higher, because the CVR on the slide-in CTAs was lower than the static CTAs. But the volume of clicks was so great that it was worth compromising on CVR.

Keep in mind that the success rate of any CTA will have a lot to do with your specific audience, so we encourage you to run some tests of your own to determine if slide-in CTAs are the right fit for your blog.

How to Install Slide-In CTAs on Your Blog Using Leadin

To install these slide-in CTAs on your blog, you’ll need:

  1. Access to either your WordPress account, or the ability to add a line of JavaScript to your company’s website.
  2. A free Leadin account (sign up here).

If you don’t have access to #1, email this article to your webmaster so he or she can setup Leadin. You can do the rest.

If this seems overwhelming, keep in mind that you’ll only need to do step one once. Once the JavaScript or WordPress plugin are added to your site, you can simply create new slide-in CTAs right from Leadin.

1) Install Leadin on your website via the WordPress plugin or standalone web app.

First, go to Leadin and create your account.

If you have WordPress, you’ll be prompted to install the plugin by following these instructions.

If you aren’t using WordPress, you’ll be asked to install a piece of JavaScript before the </body> tag in the HTML of your website. Here’s a guide on how to do that for most content management systems, including Joomla, Drupal, Wix, Weebly, and more.

tracking-code-standalone.png

If you use HubSpot to host your website, you can add Leadin as an add-on in Products & Add-ons by following these instructions. (Note: If you have an existing Leadin account, you’ll have to add the add-on, then delete your old account.)

ProductsandAdd-Ons-1.png

2) Create a Lead Flow and choose “slide-in box” as the type.

Once you have Leadin all set up, you’ll want to start by creating a Lead Flow — an all-in-one conversion pop-up that allows you to target your audience with specific content.

To access the Lead Flows editor, click “Lead Flows” in the top navigation, then “Create Lead Flow.”

Once you’re there, you’ll have several customization options. First, you’ll need to choose your Lead Flow type. To achieve the slide-in CTA effect, you’ll want to select “slide-in box.” (Note: You can choose between a slide-in that appears on the right or left — it’s up to you.)

Screen_Shot_2016-07-20_at_1.26.18_PM.png

After that, it’s time to craft your actual “callout” or CTA. Your CTA provides an opportunity to grab your visitor’s attention with a brief description of what you’re offering via a title, description, image, and theme color.

callout.png

In the callout step of the editor you can:

  1. Upload an image (also included in the form step).
  2. Set your callout text (the main header).
  3. Adjust the button text (also included in the form step).
  4. Set the theme color which will be included throughout the Lead Flow.

You will see a live update of the changes you make on the right-hand side of the editor. Here’s a closer look at what it might look like:

Zero_Budget_Guide_Slidein_CTA.png

Still with us? Good. It’s time to build your form.

Within the form step, you can add additional fields to the form, change the language of the fields, and add a body to elaborate on the value you are providing with your Lead Flow.

form.png

Screen_Shot_2016-07-21_at_1.08.56_PM.png

Language allows you to change the language of the non-editable parts of the CTA, including the form field labels. Currently, it is possible to translate these parts of the form to French, Spanish, Japanese, German, and Brazilian Portuguese. (Looking for a language that’s not listed? Let us know.)

Lastly, create a thank-you message that your visitor will see after submitting your form.

thankyou.png

In this step, you can also add a link to additional resources/downloads and include some lightly formatted text, like this:

Thank_You_Message_Slide-In_CTA.png

3) Adjust your options.

Within the “Flow Options” section, you can adjust the location of your flow, the triggers that will cause it to appear for your user, and more.

options-name.png

First, you can adjust the internal name for your Lead Flow or unpublish it if needed. When naming your CTA, keep in mind that this is the name that will appear in your contact timeline and in internal email notifications.

Next up, configure which pages you’d like your flow to appear on. You’ll notice that the ‘exact match URL’ option in Leadin supports a wildcard option. For reference, a wildcard is a character like an asterisk that serves as a placeholder for a character or group of characters — for example: “http://ift.tt/2alzYFM”.

So if you’d like your CTA to appear on all pages on your blog, make sure you add that “*” at the end.

options-location.png

Following location, you can choose the action that will trigger the Lead Flow. Your trigger options will vary depending on the Lead Flow type you’re using, but the following options are available for slide-ins:

  • Page scroll. This will trigger the moment your visitor scrolls 50% down your page.
  • Elapsed time. This will trigger the moment X seconds have past (minimum of seven seconds).

options-trigger.png

Don’t want this Lead Flow to appear on mobile? You can disable it using the next option. (Note: Lead Flows are fully mobile optimized, so in most circumstances it’s recommended to include your Lead Flows on mobile.)

options-mobile-size.png

Lastly, you can enable/disable internal email notifications for new submissions on this Lead Flow. With notifications enabled, you’ll receive an email whenever a contact is captured.

options-email-notifications.png

You can also connect Leadin to an email provider (more on that here). If you have Leadin connected to a provider you can select which lists new contacts that submit this Lead Flow will be pushed into.

options-esp.png

(HubSpot users: The Lead Flow is treated like a form. When someone fills it out, they enter the database as a form submission. From there, you can set up workflows or automated emails within HubSpot based on those form submissions.)

4) Preview & publish your CTA.

The Lead Flows editor provides an interactive preview where you can test each stage of your Lead Flow and see it in action. This preview offers the ability to view on desktop, tablet, and mobile.

preview-small.png

When you’re ready to publish your Lead Flow, simply select the blue “Publish” button in the top right.

publish.png

Need to unpublish it for some reason? Head into the “Options” tab and you’ll find an “Unpublish” option at the top. You can also unpublish right from the Lead Flows Dashboard.

unpublish.png

Once you get your Lead Flow up and running, you can track views and conversions right from your Leadin dashboard. Here’s a little preview of what that’ll look like:

Leadin_Dashboard.png

Whew, we’re finally done. You did it! Excellent work. Now let us know how it goes.

Stagefright-style vulnerability discovered in OS X and iOS, update for protection

Security researchers last year discovered what they described as ‘the worst Android vulnerability ever,’ able to infect a phone with malware simply by sending an MMS message to it. The vulnerability, dubbed Stagefright, didn’t even require people to open the message for their phone to be infected.

A Cisco researcher has now discovered a similar vulnerability in OS X and iOS, that could allow an attacker to gain access to your stored passwords and files simply by sending you a malicious image file …

What’s the Deal With Ad Blocking? 11 Stats You Need to Know

Ad_Blockers.jpg

It’s no secret that internet users are no strangers to seeking out the information they need online — in fact, Google now processes over 40,000 search queries every second.

And as the volume of search queries continues to climb, advertisers are recognizing an opportunity to introduce a number of different types of ads. (Think: pop-up ads, autoplaying video ads, and the dreaded mobile ad that takes up the entire phone screen.)

As a reaction to some of these disruptive online ads, internet users have started installing ad blocking extensions by the millions. In case you’re wondering: Ad blockers scan websites for advertising code to prevent them from loading on a browser.

Here’s a visual look at how they work:

To help marketers get a handle on the state of ad blocking today, HubSpot Research dove deep into the issue to create this report. Below, we’ve outlined some of they most noteworthy statistics and takeaways from our research to get you up to speed quickly.

11 Ad Blocking Stats You Need to Know

1) Adblock Plus, the world’s most popular ad blocking extension, has been downloaded over 500 million times.

Many research and news sites have different numbers, but it’s hard to ignore the hockey stick growth in adoption here.

2) Ad blocking is blamed for costing the advertising industry $22 Billion in 2015.

Why is ad blocking a big deal? When ads aren’t displayed, content sites that host ads and the advertiser lose out on potential revenue. And the losses have been enormous.

3) As for potential revenue losses in the future, Ovum predicts that $35 billion in ad revenue will lost by 2020 because of ad blocking.

4) 64% say ads today are annoying or intrusive.

5) Pop-up ads, autoplaying video ads, and online video ads are the most disliked online ad types.

6) 70% of respondents say they would have a lower opinion of a company that uses pop-up advertisement.

7) 34% of people say usually click online ads by accident.

8) Adoption of mobile ad blocking is growing even faster (90% YOY) than desktop-based ad blocking adoption. A study from Priori Data suggests 419 million people (a fifth of the world’s internet users) have some type of mobile ad blocker installed.

9) 83% of online browsers in the U.S., U.K., Germany, and France say they’d like to block mobile ads.

10) 73% of people stated that ads that cover the entire screen on a phone are the most annoying, followed by ads that track browsing (65%).

11) When asked about the best way to support websites (to cover costs), the majority (68%) of respondents say they don’t mind seeing ads — as long as their not annoying.

The lesson? Marketers need to use unobtrusive forms of advertising (native ads, social ads, etc.) that people tolerate more than interruptive ads like pop-ups. (Check out this post on native ad examples for inspiration.)
