How to Avoid Costly Hiring Mistakes: A Step-by-Step Guide for Recruiting Top Talent

Avoid_hiring_mistakes.jpeg

As they say, there’s no “I” in “team” … but there are a few in “hiring mistake.” And you’ll have nobody to blame but yourself if you make one.

Hire well and you’ll have a high performing and happy team. Hire just one wrong person, fondly known as a “hiring mistake,” and you’ll spend a lot of time and emotional energy trying to fix your team. This is why hiring is arguably the most important job of a people manager.

Download our free guide here to learn how to hire and organize an outstanding inbound team.

To hire well, you need to have an effective process full of checks and balances in place. Notice I used the word “process,” as hiring consists of many more components than just the classic face-to-face interview.

So to help set you up for success, we’ve detailed our process below. With tips designed to help you avoid some of the common pitfalls that lead to costly hiring mistakes, the following information is perfect for anyone looking to build out their team.

10 Recruiting Steps That Avoid Hiring Mistakes

Step 1: Write a job description that depicts your ideal candidate.

I’ve heard too many hiring managers say “I’ll know the right person when I meet him or her” when asked to describe the ideal candidate for an open position. Maybe that’s true, but that mindset can lead to terrible inefficiencies. Interviews are time consuming; you’ll waste a lot of time talking to the wrong people if you don’t take a first step of putting a thorough and accurate job description down on paper.

The job description serves a couple of important purposes. First, it tells the candidate what the job will be like and who you are looking for. Second, it forces you to be thoughtful about the attributes someone must have to be successful in this role.

The exercise of writing a solid “JD” (job description) will help you envision what this person will be doing day-to-day and what skills and experiences are required to do the job well. Be sure to include two sections:

  1. A list of the job responsibilities with descriptions of each.
  2. The set of skills, experiences and personal characteristics that the ideal candidate will possess.

Step 2: Start your own sourcing online.

Even if you have a recruiter supporting your hiring efforts (lucky you!) or a steady stream of inbound resumes, you should be doing some of your own sourcing. Here’s why: Looking at marketers’ profiles will help you better articulate to yourself and others what the ideal candidate looks like. Plus, you may find the perfect person who wasn’t in the job market and therefore never would have found your job description.

Our advice? Start online. Community sites like LinkedIn and inbound.org have helpful filters and search functions to help you comb through profiles more effectively. Send a very personalized message to anyone who looks qualified. Keep in mind that candidates tend to be more receptive to hiring managers than recruiters — and even if they don’t bite, their response will help give you a pulse on the market. If you come across a few strong candidates, be sure to send them to anyone else involved in the hiring process to set expectations.

Once you’re done combing through online profiles, get your networked involved. Employee referrals are ideal for a few reasons. For one, they often have a longer length of employment: 46% of employee referrals stay for three years or more while only 14% of those hired from job boards stayed, according to Jobvite. Not to mention, employees hired through referrals are hired 55% faster than those from a career site.

To facilitate more referrals, post the JD on all of your social networks and talk the position up with your peers. There’s nothing more comforting than hiring someone who has experience working with a trusted friend or colleague. Remember, this process is designed to minimize risk and avoid hiring mistakes.

Step 3: Review resumes with Google by your side.

The old fashioned written resume still has its place, as it provides a candidate with an opportunity to market him or herself for the job. I always say, “How can I expect someone to market my product well if they can’t market themselves well?”

In terms of what to look for, an effective resume should tell a story where your open position is the natural next chapter. It should be concise, well-written, include metrics, and demonstrate a record of goal achievement.

When you find one the piques your interest, open your browser to get more of the story. Check out the candidate’s social media presence, website, and any publically available content such as blog articles. Be realistic about how much of an online presence this person should have based on their level of experience, and view anything you find with a critical eye. Do they understand fundamentals of digital marketing? Do they write in a voice that would match with your organization’s style? Do they use good judgment in what they chose to post about themselves?

Step 4: Plan out the 30-minute screening meeting.

You will probably have to talk to dozens of candidates, so be strict about keeping a first phone screen or coffee meeting to just 30 minutes. The goal is to use those 30 minutes really wisely. If you’re not prepared, you might end up hanging up the phone not knowing whether or not you should move forward with the candidate.

To avoid this, create an outline of questions you plan to ask the candidate. I like to include a mix of questions that explore behavior, skills, and critical thinking. Have a set of questions that you’ll ask everyone so that you have some good points for comparison, as well as a set of customized questions for each candidate. The personalized questions should probe into areas you were uncertain about after the resume and online review you completed.

Once you’re on the call, don’t fire off the questions like an interrogation. Instead, use your outline to help guide a natural conversation. If you need to get to a new topic, or find a candidate rambling, try interjecting with a transition such as “You’ve given me a great understanding of (topic x), so now I’d like to shift gears and talk about (topic y).”

At the end of the conversation, go with your gut. Are you excited by the idea of talking to this person again? If no, prepare a thoughtful note explaining why they are not the right fit for the job. If yes, move them forward in the process. Even if you have a few uncertainties about their skills or experiences, the next step is going to be a really subjective checkpoint that won’t take much of your time.

Step 5: Give candidates written exercises to complete.

Every marketer needs to be a strong writer. All marketing jobs involve content creation, so the candidate should be able to create high quality content with ease. This stage of the hiring process is the perfect time to test someone’s writing skills by assigning a written exercise. This step won’t suck up much of your time, and it can be really helpful in determining the candidate’s interest in the roll.

When designing a written exercise, think about real life scenarios —  your own work, or that of team members with similar roles, can be a great source for ideas. Here are a few examples I’ve used before:

  • Blog post. Ask the candidate to write a blog post for a specific topic, or have them come up with their own topic based on certain buyer persona for your business.
  • Mock case study. Provide notes from a customer interview and ask the candidate to write up a mock case study.
  • Landing page optimization. Create a worksheet with that includes organic traffic numbers and submission rates for a number of landing pages. Ask the candidate which they would optimize if they only had the time to do two, and why. You could also provide sample landing pages and ask for suggested edits.
  • Competitive battlecard. Ask the candidate to create a one-page summary comparing one of your products or services to a competitor’s.

Step 6: Assemble a strong interview team.

If the candidate passes the written test, it’s time to bring them into the office for a round of interviews. You’ll want to start by having the candidate interview with one of your team members, your superior, and you. But don’t stop there.

Always include the main stakeholders this person must work with well to be successful. It’s important to include them on the interviewing team to get their buy-in and get off on a positive foot. Also, they will likely add a different perspective than people on your direct team.

You may also want to consider including additional interviewers who can add a unique point of view or who simply have a reputation as being great interviewers. For example, you might include someone to test for culture, product aptitude, or analytical skills.

Step 7: Prep the interview team.

It’s incredibly important to set up an interviewing strategy to use everyone’s collective time to the fullest. Doing so will create a better experience for both the candidates and the interviewers.

The first step is to reflect upon what you know about the candidate so far. Then, consider how you can use each interviewer’s strengths and experiences to poke holes in the candidate and remove any uncertainty you have about them.

Once you have decided on a strategy, send an email to the interviewing team including the following information:

The Candidate

  • Background. Include a few bullet points on what you think is most relevant, with a link to his or her LinkedIn profile and resume.
  • Strengths. Make note of what you have observed and why he or she has made it this far.
  • Weaknesses. Explain why you are willing to live with any weaknesses that you may have already identified.
  • Uncertainties. Highlight the main areas the team overall will be testing for to finish the evaluation of this candidate.

Competencies to Test

Give each interviewer two or three areas to focus on. This helps them use their own time more effectively and allows you to test more competencies, more deeply. It also provides a better experience for the candidate: there’s nothing more annoying than being asked the same question four times in one day.

Step 8: Conduct a thoughtful interview.

As with the phone screen, preparation is key for the in-person interview. You’ve already done some of the work for the others on the team by giving them specific areas to probe into. However, if anyone on the team is not a very experienced interviewer, you may also want to provide them with example questions to ask.

Interview questions will vary based on the role and the candidate’s experience, but I generally like to use the following structure:

  • Resume review. When reviewing the resume, I’m looking to see how well they can market themselves for this specific role. I ask them to keep it to just two or three minutes since I’ve already read their background.
  • Job interest. Always ask why the candidate wants to work at your company and in this specific role. It’s a good way to see how much homework they have done, if they truly understand what it takes, and how well they can sell themselves.
  • Behavioral questions. I usually have three or four questions in mind that have either been sparked by something I saw on the resume or by something I think will be challenging in their role.
  • Case questions. I like to use more open ended marketing case questions to test a candidate’s critical thinking, marketing acumen, and how they deal with ambiguity. Here are some marketing case examples from HubSpot’s CMO.

Always allow at least five minutes for the candidate to ask you questions at the end, and at least ten if you’re the hiring manager. Their level of preparation and thoughtfulness behind their questions will give you a lot of insight into how they approach problems. It will also give you an idea of how comfortable and effective they are being in the drivers seat now that you’ve handed them the wheel.

Step 9: Gather feedback from the interview team.

As the hiring manager, the ultimate decision about whether to hire a candidate is yours. But remember that you assembled a whole interview team for a reason: to ensure you’d get a wide variety of perspectives. That said, be very thoughtful when considering the feedback of others.

Hopefully, you’ll all be on the same page. But if someone has raised any uncertainty, don’t hesitate to go back to conduct additional interviews, present additional exercises, or check with references. This process is all about reducing risk, so the whole team should feel very confident about a hiring decision before you make an offer.

Step 10: Share both good and bad news with the candidates.

It’s important to follow up with every candidate, whether you’re delivering good news or bad news. And the faster you do it the better. Nobody likes to wait around wondering if they should be getting ready for celebration or consolation.

Making a job offer can be incredibly fun and rewarding. If the candidate has other offers, it’s also an important time to do some selling. Go into the conversation prepared to discuss specific terms of the offer, such as salary. Or, if someone else will be having that discussion, let the candidate know up front when they can expect those details and who will be sharing them.

On the flip side, it’s tough to reject someone for a job. Be thoughtful about whether it’s more appropriate to deliver the news on the phone or via email. That will depend on the candidate’s personality and the relationship you’ve developed with them. You should provide the reason(s) why they didn’t get the job, but you don’t need to be detailed. If they do ask for more feedback as follow-up, be constructive. You saw potential in this person when they applied, so why not invest just a little more time to help them develop?

JBL announces its Legend CP100 head unit with support for CarPlay

Screen Shot 2016-01-05 at 8.40.58 PM

Harman today has announced the JBL Legend CP100 in-car infotainment system. The JBL Legend CP100 marks the company’s first in-car solution that is compatible with Apple’s CarPlay system, joining the growing number of aftermarket solutions for obtaining Apple’s car infotainment system in older vehicles.

The JBL Legend CP100 features a 6.75-inch capacitive touchscreen, as opposed to a resistive touchscreen offered by other head unit manufacturers. Capacitive touchscreens are often easier to use as they require a lighter touch to navigate. Furthermore, the Legend CP100 features an AM/FC tuner, rear USB input, rear camera input, and carries support for steering wheel controls. The rear camera input would allow for users to connect a backup camera to the display.

The head unit also offers a “push to talk” button, which JBL says provides instant access to Siri. There’s also support for Bluetooth 3.0. The JBL Legend does not appear, however, to support wireless CarPlay, which was introduced last year but has yet to really catch on in any significant fashion.

As far as the look of the head unit goes, it features an all black design with white illumination buttons, and the aforementioned “push to talk button.” There’s also a volume button and a power button.

Pricing and availability for the JBL Legend CP100 is unclear at this point. The full press release can be read below:

Apple reportedly preparing to build second data center cluster in Reno

iCloud Calendar

Apple is set to further set to build upon its data center in Reno, Nevada according to a report out of the Reno Gazette-Journal. Apple has been building upon its Reno data center for a while now, but the company has recently filed a permit with the county requesting permission to construct a new data center adjacent to the existing one.

The report claims that Apple will build the second data center under the codename “Project Huckleberry.” The new data center will reportedly be several new clusters of data centers, as well as a support building. This is similar to the existing to the similar set up in Reno, which is codenamed “Project Mills.”

A senior planner for Washoe County told the Reno Gazette-Journal that Project Huckleberry will be similar to Project Mills. “It’s a whole different set of buildings but it looks like it is going to be essentially the same design as Project Mills, only turned perpendicularly to the east,” Trevor Lloyd told the news organization.

Apple has yet to complete construction of its Project Mills data center as it keeps expanding, although it is operational. The company has invested more than $1 billion into the center. Project Mills consists 14 building combining for over 412,00 square feet of space. The center is responsible for Apple’s cloud services like iCloud, iTunes, and the App Store.

Apple hopes to be granted the permit for Project Huckleberry by the end of this month. It makes sense for Apple to continue building at the same site for data expansions, as uprooting its structure would undoubtedly be time and money consuming.

Freelancer – Hire Online Experts to Get Your Project Done

freelancer logoMany small businesses are familiar with the concept of outsourcing and hiring freelancers. Some organizations hire external service providers because they have no other choice, but some do so with a conscious effort to cut costs. Aside from trying to control costs, another benefit of hiring freelancers is the ability to start new projects quickly. Building and training an in-house project team may take a longer time than simply hiring the services of trained experts ready to hit the ground running. Especially for small businesses in today’s quick-changing market landscape, time is a luxury. Freelancer.com provides a place to find help in no time.

Introducing Freelancer

Freelancer Technology Pty Limited is a publicly listed company based in Sydney, NSW, Australia. It does have a global presence with offices in Vancouver, BC, Canada; London, UK; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Manila, Philippines; and Jakarta, Indonesia. It was founded in 2004 and has made several acquisitions, the latest of which is Escrow.com. It went public in November 2013 and is listed as FLN on the Australian Securities Exchange. Matt Barrie is Chairman and CEO since 2009.

Freelancer is described as the largest online job marketplace in terms of total number of users (17.6M+) and number of projects posted (9.2M+). Employers can post for free a project or job to be done. Users will offer quotes or bids to complete the project. The employer then chooses to award the project to his or her selected freelancer. A built-in chat allows the employer and freelancer to communicate about the status and progress of the work. The employer can then release payment after he or she is satisfied with the work completed. Freelancer.com takes a percentage fee of the total cost of the work.

Types of Freelance Projects

Some of the projects that small businesses can outsource through Freelancer are website development, web design, SEO marketing, mobile app development, article writing, business card design, company logo design, and data entry jobs, among others. Posting a website development job, for example, is easy by clicking the link which then displays a form that allows the employer to fill in job details. A dropdown menu displays the choices for the type of job such as building a website, an online store, or creating a WordPress template. There are also choices whether the project is fixed rate or hourly rate and the budget of the project.

freelancer image 1

Is it for everyone?

Freelancer and other online job marketplace companies provide opportunities for both businesses and service providers. Aside from better cost control and rapid deployment, small business owners and company staff also can become more efficient and focus on their core business. However, there are also risks and disadvantages in outsourcing, such as poor quality control, exposure of confidential data, low morale and decreased loyalty among internal staff. These can be managed with the right attitude, well-explained strategy and project management tools. However, it is recommended that not all functions should be outsourced.

Reviews and Issues

In several sites, Freelancer has been receiving low reviews for unresolved issues particularly in their payment system. There are also issues about the need to pay for commissions charged to employers aside from service fees. As one of the largest, it is expected that problems will arise, but because they cater to a very large number of users and projects, any problem will surely be significant. If you have tried their site or service, feel free to share your experience with us.

Samsung Gear S2 to gain iOS compatibility later this year, now comes in gold & platinum

samsung-gear-s2

At its CES keynote, Samsung announced that its Gear S2 smartwatches will come in two new metal finishes and will get iOS compatibility later this year.

The Gear S2 launched with compatibility for non-Samsung Android devices, whereas their previous wearables required a Samsung phone. Later this year, the S2 will receive an update that adds support for iOS devices. The level of integration and feature set is unknown, but will likely come via a companion app on the App Store.

The smartwatch will now also come in 18K Rose Gold Plated and Platinum variants, in addition to the current stainless steel model with leather strap. The regular Gear S2 just comes with a plastic body and rubber wrist strap. The two new models will be available starting in February, though pricing has yet to be announced.

More Google-y CES coverage is available over on 9to5Google.

How to Get the Most out of Your Project Management System

Need a simple project management software to manage your team?
Check-out our valuable and unique Top 15 Web Applications 2015.

How to Get the Most out of Your Project Management SystemUnless you like doing things the hard way, you probably use a project management system. Why wouldn’t you? There’s tons of software available to help project managers simplify their careers by providing all the necessary tools for organization. The biggest possible mistake would be to assume that this software can essentially do your job for you. It can’t, but it can make doing your job a lot easier if you’re using it correctly.

Use a cloud based system

If everyone is running around, or some people work remotely, having a stationary system can only take you so far. Opting for a cloud based system will allow workers to tend to their responsibilities from wherever they are. Smartphones, tablets, and laptops let us take our work with us, and you can’t afford to take that option off the table. This is especially important for business trips if you want to maintain the same standard of quality outside of the office.

Don’t expect magic

Project management systems are immensely useful, but they aren’t magic. They’re a great way to keep track of numbers and data, and they’re also helpful for making charts, lists, and graphs. You have to plug in this information properly, otherwise nothing is going to get done. Don’t rely on project management software to do all the hard work for you. They’re more of a supplemental tool than a universal fixer.

Integrate your software

What you can integrate largely depends on what project management system you choose. Selecting a closed system will only provide you with limited capabilities. You need to use a software that will work with other programs you’re currently using. Things like Quickbooks and Microsoft applications are also an integral part of your job, so using a project management system that’s designed to work in synergy with your other products will give you a cohesive, smooth working experience.

Train your employees

What good is it to have something that no one knows how to use? If you’re the only one who can interact with your management software, you’re going to be faced with many unnecessary burdens. If the software comes with a tutorial, make sure your employees have access to it. If not, either hire someone to train them or take the time to do it yourself. Allowing untrained employees to dabble with the software can have a disastrous outcome, and that’s not a risk you should take.

Use tracking features

Tracking features are the biggest part of project management systems that simplify your life. Many newer systems offer live tracking for expenses and productivity. These figures allow you to see where you are relative to your deadline, and having to manually draw up those numbers on a constant basis can drag you down. By using these features, you’re saving yourself time and energy by having readily available figures you can work with.

Stay cohesive

If you’ve found the perfect project management system, it’s only as good as the people who are using it. If everyone is using different software, you’ll wind up with some wonky outcomes. Make sure the software you ultimately choose has all the features you require, and then make sure everyone else agrees with that decision. Everyone should use the same software to avoid confusion.

You should always have realistic expectations of your software, and be consistent in its use. Every business has different needs, and your software needs to accommodate your vision. In the event that you can’t find prepared software that will work for you right out of the box, you can always contact software companies and inquire about customized solutions.

Heading into 2016, Apple looks to continue expanding Apple Watch availability. On January 29th, the device will become available in Portugal and Czech Republic. The Apple Watch initially launched in 9 countries around the globe on April 24th of last year and has gradually been expanding to more markets since then. We reported last month, however, that Apple plans to introduce the second-gen model during a March press event.

Review: Riutbag, the back-to-front backpack designed to keep your gadgets safe from thieves

riutbag-review

Backpacks are as convenient a way to carry things around a city as they are when hiking in the great outdoors, keeping your hands free and spreading the load across two shoulders, but they can be a little worrying when you’re carrying expensive gadgets. The reason? All the zips are behind you. Standing on an escalator, in an elevator or on a platform waiting for a train, you always have the worry of a thief quietly unzipping the compartments to make off with your hard-earned technology.

A messenger bag feels safer, because you can carry it at your side with an arm across it, but it’s less convenient and less comfortable than a backpack. This is the problem Riut set out to solve, with a secure backpack designed specifically to keep your gadgets safe from sneak thieves – so I thought I’d give it a try …

A conventional backpack design has two flaws where security is concerned. First, all the zips are on the outside, leaving them accessible to anyone standing behind you. Second, there are usually lots of separate compartments, each with their own zip, so multiple pockets are left vulnerable.

The Riutbag reverses this approach. First, the zips are against your back, where it would be virtually impossible for anyone to unzip them. Second, there are only two zips – one for a small phone/wallet pocket, and the other one giving access to all of the interior compartments. In this photo, the small pocket zip is completely hidden beneath the straps, while the main compartment zips are shown at the side. In practice, when wearing it, you keep the zips at the top, where they are completely inaccessible without removing the backpack.

zips

The original Riutbag, launched back in 2014 after a successful Kickstarter campaign, was a little bulky for everyday use, with a capacity of 20 litres. The new models are available in a choice of 10 and 15 litre capacities. I tested the slimmer of these, the Riutbag 10, which is small enough to slip under an airline seat so should be accepted as a second bag for those airlines that allow a laptop bag in addition to your main carry-on.

Look & feel

The lack of rear zips aside, the Riutbag 10 looks very much like every other commuter backpack out there, especially in the new black version I tried (there’s also a grey one). It’s smart enough to take to meetings, but doesn’t in any way stand out – something I consider a plus when carrying valuables. You don’t want a bag that screams out ‘Gadget bag – steal me!’.

One immediate difference you notice from most urban backpacks is the shiny plastic base. This is waterproof, and designed to ensure that the contents remain dry if you ever need to take it off and put it down on a wet sidewalk to access the bag. It’s one of those small touches that tells you the company has thought about practicality. The main fabric material is, like most backpacks, water resistant but not fully waterproof.

Wallet/phone pocket

If you’re in an area where pickpocketing is a concern, it’s nice to be able to slip your wallet and phone into a secure pocket while also keeping them reasonably accessible. The pocket is very small, but was large enough for my iPhone 6s and Belroy wallet. It also accommodates a standard passport and a set of keys.

Laptop compartment

When you open up the main zip, there’s a laptop slot large enough for a 15-inch MacBook Pro, with elastic straps to hold it in place when opening the bag flat on the floor. This slot is extremely well padded on the outside – the side that sits against your back. There’s only thin padding on the other side, but it seems adequate unless you’re carrying anything sharp inside the bag.

inside

Other compartments

Next is what Riut describes as an A4 document holder. As a paperless person, I used this for my iPad Air 2, comfortably accommodated with the attached Brydge keyboard. There’s a generously-sized cable compartment, easily big enough for a power pack and a complete set of cables. A nice touch here is the four color-coded cable-tidy straps included. There’s also a business card slot in here, which I used for a USB key. There are four pen/pencil slots above for anyone who uses such things – could be useful for an Apple Pencil when carrying an iPad Pro.

Finally, there is a large general compartment suitable for a sweater and other bits and pieces, plus two slim zipped pockets suitable for documents or more cables.

In use

The bag is comfortable to wear, though it did take a couple of days for the straps to lose some of their initial stiffness. There’s a chest strap, which personally I find overkill on a bag of this size, and it wasn’t that comfortable when I tried it. Personally, on anything short of a hefty hiking/climbing backpack, I tend to cut off chest straps.

I quickly got used to the reverse design of the bag. You do have to be a little careful unzipping the main compartment, as it can flop right down to the ground. This is actually really useful when you want to get at something in the general compartment – far preferable to the rummaging around needed with many backpacks – but you need to get used to it, to ensure you don’t allow things to fall out. The elastic straps on the laptop are reassuring here.

I was impressed how much even the smallest of the range held. As someone who travels light, this would even work for me as a weekend bag.

Price & conclusions

At $120 for the 10-liter model and $135 for the 15-liter version, it’s not an inexpensive bag. You could pick up a broadly similar-quality conventional backpack for less than half this amount – albeit usually not as well organized inside.

The question then becomes whether the secure design is worth the premium. Personally, I think it is. Having stuff stolen from a backpack isn’t an everyday occurrence, but the risk is something I’m conscious of when wearing a conventional one, so there is that constant background concern about it. That makes every journey just that little bit less pleasant.

Having invited a couple of friends to try opening the Riutbag zips when I was wearing it, I feel totally confident nobody could do so without me being aware of the attempt. It thus provides real peace of mind when you can easily be carrying three grand’s worth of electronics. My view is that the premium you pay will soon be forgotten, but the reassurance will be appreciated each time you use it.

The black Riutbag is available for pre-order from Riut’s website, for delivery in February. The grey one is theoretically available now, but currently showing out of stock. The R10 is $120, and the R15 $135.

Incipio adds USB-C MacBook docks, dockable offGRID iPhone batteries to lineup

incipiousbcetc

Expanding upon earlier product lineups, Incipio today announced a number of 12″ MacBook-ready USB Type-C accessories and dockable offGRID series batteries for iPhone users. The USB-C accessories offer affordable ways to expand either the ports or charging capabilities of Apple’s Retina MacBook, while the offGRID options include compact, device-agnostic dockable batteries and a new iPhone 6/6s battery case…

On the USB-C front, Incipio announced the Type-C Dual Port Hub ($25), which inexpensively adds twin full-sized USB ports to the 12″ MacBook and other devices with USB-C ports, and the USB Type-C Dock ($80), which includes one full-sized USB port, one HDMI port, one Ethernet port, and one USB-C port that passes through power for MacBook charging. Each of the compact jet black peripherals includes a retractable USB-C cable.

Incipio_Type C Dock

Incipio also announced the tablet/phone-ready USB Type-C Car Charger ($35), the laptop/tablet/phone-ready USB Type-C Wall Charger ($35), and two versions of the USB Type-C + Quick Charge 3.0 Portable Backup Battery ($100/8,000mAh, $130/12,000mAh), each with laptop/tablet/phone support. The Wall Charger and Batteries also have full-sized USB ports to support non-USB-C devices; the Car Charger does not.

incipiooffgriddock

On the iPhone front, Incipio’s offGRID Backup Battery 2000mAh ($60) is a tube-shaped 2,000mAh/2.1A cell with an integrated Lightning connector, compatible with the new offGRID Charging Dock. Oddly, Incipio will sell a $70 dual 2000mAh battery bundle with the Charging Dock, which is capable of recharging both batteries at once using wireless contacts in its base.

offgridbt

As a sequel to the company’s popular offGRID Express battery case for iPhone 6, the new offGRID Bluetooth Smart Backup Battery Case for iPhone 6/6s ($80) features a 3,000mAh cell and the ability to “wirelessly monitor and control power and battery usage” using Incipio’s Smart Battery app. The same concept was announced two years ago for an earlier “offGRID Smart” battery case for iPhone 5/5s, which may or may not have shipped. It’s unclear why anyone would need to remotely monitor or control an iPhone battery case, but if you want that feature (and don’t mind paying a premium for it), all of Incipio’s new offGRID and USB-C solutions are coming in the second quarter of this year.

Genius Project: The Solution to the Challenges of Email and Excel

Genius Project The Solution to the Challenges of Email, Excel and Desktop FoldersIt comes as no surprise that email, excel spreadsheets and desktop folders are considered ineffective tools for managing projects. Their limitations for storing & sharing documents, planning and collaborating are indisputable and ripe with complication. They definitely have their uses (and let’s be honest, we’re all a little guilty of obsessing over our emails) but managing project information and teams is a process that requires a considerably more sophisticated system. Enter the Genius Project solution – a powerful project management system with the functions and capabilities to keep your projects organized and on track.

To get more specific, let’s breakdown how Genius Project can eliminate the limitations of email, excel and desktop folders.

Document Management

Genius Project is designed to safe guard all your documents in a protected library with versioning capabilities – so that you can be clear on which version is the most updated. The system allows users to attach files and documents to tasks, deliverables, project descriptions and any other carrier of information. One of the features users find most useful is the ability to integrate project documents in any format, ie. Excel, Word, WordPro, Photoshop, AutoCad, Adobe Acrobat – you name it. These files can then be edited directly in the system, ensuring everyone is reading and working on the latest version. This is a direct solution for saving desktop space and limiting email exchanges.

Vulnerability

All too often documents disappear from email inboxes and desktop folders; and excel spreadsheets are prone to errors because of their auto correct feature. With Genius Project, users can define how long they wish to have access to documents that are sent to trash. But even at that, there’s always a way to recover deleted documents, so that you can rest easy. As long as you have the access permission, you can access any document, any time.

Collaboration

Genius Live! is the software’s online collaboration platform. This feature allows for project forums and discussions, email and to-do notifications, live chatting and provides project managers and team members instant access to project information. The social tool delivers a single page view such as that seen on a Facebook wall; in this case, the news feed consists of project updates and statuses. And as to be expected, it’s accessible from multiple devices for access on the go.

Planning

There’s no denying that email, excel spreadsheets and desktop folders have little to no capabilities when it comes to project planning. Genius Project has a multi-project Gantt Chart where tasks, phases and resources can be specifically defined. Known as Genius Planner, this planning feature allows users to assign and link tasks, determine a timeline, estimate costs and resource requirements. The best part is its visual component, which provides an in-depth view into deliverables and their dependents.

Security

Genius Project’s servers are located in Softlayer, an IBM Company with state-of-the art facilities. Their multi-level approach for shielding customer data against physical and electronic threats ensures maximum uptime and protection. GP’s clients also have the ability to define their security requirements for internal use, by setting up the proper access permissions for each user, and based on each project or project document.

More reasons to love Genius Project:

genius project logoGenius Project is available as cloud-based and on-premise, which means project information is always accessible online (depending on permission levels) and not trapped onto someone’s desktop. The software is equipped with powerful features for time tracking, resource management, dashboards, reporting and so much more. Toptal – Top-notch Talent for Tech Projects

Need a simple project management software to manage your team?
Check-out our valuable and unique Top 15 Web Applications 2015.

toptal logoAccording to a 2012 study involving large software projects, as much as 66 percent went over their budget and about 33 percent went over their schedule. It was noted also in the same study that nearly half of the cost overruns was because of the failure to secure critically essential human resources, either from inside the organization or from outside consultancy. The problem, however, was not the absence of talent, but the channel to find world-class software talent who can quickly make up the team or augment an existing one. Toptal addresses this need by providing an elite network of freelancers with minimal to zero risk.

Introducing Toptal

Toptal is a privately held job marketplace company based in San Francisco, CA, USA. It was founded in 2010 by Taso Du Val, CEO; and Breanden Beneschott, COO. Both are experienced engineers and brilliant entrepreneurs. In November, Deloitte ranked the company as the fastest growing talent marketplace in North America. Toptal has built an exclusive community of talented engineers and designers, from MIT, CERN, and Google, to name a few. Its business model differs from other open job marketplace companies due to its rigorous screening process to make sure it can supply quality software engineers and designers that fit the project team and requirement.

Finding the Perfect Match

To find the right Toptal resource, a client first has to tell it the kind of freelance tech talent it needs. The talent company can cater to dozens of different development and technical environments, with experts in different programming languages and device platforms. From its database, it will find for the client the most suitable talent for the project. To ensure smooth communications, all its freelancers speak, read and write English fluently. Clients will be able to work with the freelancers with zero risk for a trial period. Payment is expected only if the client is satisfied. These freelancers are ready to be part of the core project team or even make up the whole team.

Vetting Process

Applicants go through a strict screening process so that clients are ensured that the talent they hire can deliver. The first step that applicants go through is a comprehensive interview that tests language, personality and communication. Next, knowledge of fundamental concepts and skills in problem solving are demonstrated in time-pressured tests. Afterwards, applicants are screened by at least two Toptal senior engineers or designers. Then a candidate is assigned to a test project to demonstrate their competence, professionalism and other important traits. Those who pass should continue to maintain an excellent track record. For each stage, the percentage of passers decreases until only the top 3 percent remains.

Fields of Expertise

Toptal has experts in many computer science technologies. Some of these are Android, AngularJS, API, C#, Django, HTML5, iOS, Java, .NET, PHP, Ruby and more. For instance, by clicking the link to Android developers, the site will display several top freelance developers from the USA, Germany, Macedonia, Croatia and Romania. Last October, the company also launched a job marketplace for designers, and some of the areas of expertise are Adobe Illustrator, Graphics, Logos, Mobile Apps, Photoshop, UI, UX and the Web, among others. When the Web Design link is clicked, the top freelance experts from the USA, Croatia, Argentina, Ukraine, Russia, Poland, Bulgaria and Austria are displayed.

Positive Feedback

Among Toptal’s clients are Axel Springer AG, J.P. Morgan, KDDI Laboratories America, Airbnb, Zendesk, and Art.sy. Mike Riess at RiessGroup stated that hiring their developers was a pleasant experience, where every developer has been professional, skilled and self-managing. Dennis Baldwin at Priceblink described the developer they hired as top notch, responsive and efficient. Most project engagements are large and serious, providing freelancers competitive compensation as well as more learning experience to become even better professionals. For project managers who are planning to fill up their resource list for an upcoming project or for those who are pressed for time to save a failing project, Toptal is a handy site that can provide the solution. Let us know your experience if you have tried them in your projects.
