iDevices adds new Siri-controlled wall outlets, switches and light sockets to its HomeKit lineup
We’ve already seen some interesting new HomeKit accessories out of CES 2016 including the first Siri-controlled ceiling fans, and now iDevices is expanding its current lineup of HomeKit-compatible products with four new gadgets that make home automation even easier. The Apple accessory maker is showing off its new Socket, Wall Switch, Dimmer Switch, and Wall Outlet which will let you control and automate standard light bulbs and other appliances using iOS and Siri. iDevices already offers a HomeKit Switch and Outdoor Switch (plus Thermostat), and today’s newly announced gear includes hard-wired solutions and ways to turn any lightbulb into a smart lightbulb.
If you want to control your lights from iOS and Siri but don’t want to invest in expensive light bulbs with built-in Wi-Fi, iDevices Socket will connect between your current light socket and ordinary light bulbs. Socket lets you toggle lights on and off as well as change brightness levels, and a built-in nightlight on the unit can change colors as a bonus effect.
iDevices is also offering another method for making your lights smarter with the Wall Switch and Dimmer Switch. Both products replace standard light switches and add iOS control as well as LED nightlights on the hardware. Switch features standard on/off toggling, while Dimmer Switch adds brightness adjusting.
Finally, Wall Outlet is iDevices’ hard-wired solution for adding a smart outlet to your home. While Switch connects to the existing outlet and can easily be moved between rooms, Wall Outlet is a more permanent solution that looks like a traditional electrical outlet. It features two outlets which can be controlled individually, and Siri control and app automation for whatever you plug in.
Pricing details and specific release dates aren’t yet available, but we’ll keep an eye on this space throughout the year with updates when the new HomeKit gear is available. iDevices says Socket is coming during Q1, Wall Switch and Dimmer Switch in Q2, and Wall Outlet in Q3 so each product should be available before the next holiday season.

Fitbit’s latest Blaze activity tracker/watch has color, 5-day battery & Apple Watch ‘style’
This morning Fitbit took the stage at CES to announce its latest activity tracker. The Fitbit Blaze sits between the Charge HR and Surge trackers in the company’s current product lineup. While it may look a whole lot like many full-blown iOS/Android smartwatches, its main focus is still fitness rather than numerous third-party app complications.
Update: Fitbit’s stock price is plummeting on the news that it is entering Apple’s Watch realm. As of this writing, the stock price is down 11% and falling. Investors clearly aren’t fans.
The Blaze is the first Fitbit to feature a high-resolution color touchscreen LCD display. It comes with a elastomer band and stainless steel frame, but in a move reminiscent to Apple’s focus on style with its Watch, Fitbit is also offering a wide range of different bands and frames. You can even customize its look even more through a variety of clock faces. There is some resemblance to what Apple is doing but clearly the focus here is on fitness.
Blaze was designed to help you get in the best shape of your life by offering valuable health data, motivational coaching, and detailed workout instructions with animated images. PurePulse delivers all-day heart rate information that can “help you maintain workout intensity and better track calories burned during each workout” and provide vital data like “resting heart rate and heart rate trends over time.” Other features like Multi-Sport and SmartTrack take the pain out of logging individual workouts. A single charge is estimated to last up to 5-days.
Aside from its fitness tracking abilities, Blaze can also relay call, text and calendar alerts, as well as adjust volume and song selection from your iPhone or Android smartphone.
Fitbit Blaze can be pre-ordered now with a black, blue, or plum band for $199.95 and is expected to be released in March. Looking for a deal on a current generation Fitbit? The Charge is on sale for $89.99 (Reg. $130) and the Charge HR is down to $109.99 (Reg. $150).
Full press releases follows:
- Enhanced fitness features like FitStar™ by Fitbit® on-screen workouts, Connected GPS, PurePulse® heart rate tracking, and SmartTrack™ automatic exercise recognition help motivate and push your fitness further
- Focus on style featuring a slim design, easily interchangeable bands and frames, and a beautiful, color touchscreen with a variety of clock faces to fit your personal style
- Curated to fit your life and focused on the features that make tracking your health and fitness easier, Fitbit Blaze includes the smart notifications that matter most, like call, text and calendar alerts, so you can stay connected to what’s important, and a long battery life of up to 5 days allows you to keep up with your life, day and night
“One of the first things we learned in this industry is that fitness is personal – and if something isn’t your style, you won’t wear it,” said James Park, CEO and Co-Founder of Fitbit. “With Fitbit Blaze, we pushed the boundaries of what’s possible to create a beautiful, versatile device that can be customized to fit your personal style – while packing a powerful fitness punch to help you reach your goals. Fitbit Blaze delivers a combination of innovative features that were carefully selected with intention and purpose, designed to motivate and offer a fitness experience that is more effortless and more useful with advanced guidance and coaching.”
Enhanced Fitness Experience
In addition to tracking all of the best all-day activity stats you have come to expect from Fitbit, Fitbit Blaze was built with next-generation features to help you take your workouts to the next level:
- FitStar Personal Trainer on-screen workouts deliver guided instructions and animated images to three of the most popular personal trainer workouts from FitStar: Warm It Up (8 minutes), 7 Minute Workout, and 10 Minute Abs. Each workout is free and can be accessed at any time with no app or smartphone required, offering a fast, effective workout you can do anywhere.
- Connected GPS helps you train smarter by delivering real-time exercise stats like distance, pace and minute-mile split times when connected to a smartphone’s GPS. After each workout, stats sync wirelessly to the Fitbit dashboard to let you review your route, speed and elevation in more detail.
- PurePulse continuous, wrist-based heart rate tracking helps maximize any training routine with simplified heart rate zones to help you maintain workout intensity and better track calories burned during each workout. PurePulse also provides all-day insights into overall health, including resting heart rate and heart rate trends over time, all without an uncomfortable chest strap.
- Multi-sport mode lets you record specific activities like biking, cardio, running, weights, yoga and more while providing relevant, real-time performance stats to help you get the most out of each workout. PurePulse is enhanced while in Multi-sport mode for even better heart rate tracking, especially during high intensity workouts.
- SmartTrack automatic exercise recognition automatically recognizes and records continuous movement activities like biking, hiking and running, with general categories for aerobic workouts (i.e., Zumba®, cardio-kickboxing and other dance classes) and sports (i.e., tennis, basketball and soccer). It gives you more ways to stay motivated and get credit for your workouts by effortlessly recording them in the Fitbit app and automatically adding them toward weekly exercise goals.
“As a former professional athlete, nothing gets me more motivated than a great coach,” said Tony Gonzalez, football legend and FitStar Trainer. “FitStar Personal Trainer offers workouts you can do anytime, anywhere, using your computer, tablet or phone and it’s only getting easier, thanks to this new integration with Fitbit Blaze.”
Get Fit in Style – Focus on Fashion and Personalization
Fitbit Blaze is a sleek, versatile timepiece that fits your personal style with:
- Premium interchangeable bands made from genuine leather, stainless steel and high-performance elastomer to let you design a look that’s extremely personal and a perfect fit – whether at the gym, in the office or out on the town.
- A unique modular design that allows you to easily remove and insert your tracker into a new frame, so you can wear Fitbit Blaze with style at work and then swap it instantly into a new frame with a workout-friendly wristband. Use the quick release spring bars to switch your bands and change the look of your device in seconds.
- Fitbit’s first vibrant, high-resolution, color touchscreen and multiple clock faces make the device uniquely yours and distinguishable from others.
Curated Features that Fit Your Life
From the inside out, Fitbit Blaze is a carefully curated experience designed to help you take action without distraction. Each feature was selected with intention and purpose to help you stay connected, maximize your entire day and night, and fit effortlessly into your life:
- Stay connected with smart notifications you need. Fitbit Blaze features the smartphone notifications you need most instead of being overwhelmed with unnecessary information.
- Bluetooth® Smart connectivity delivers call, text and calendar notifications through on-screen messages and a vibrating alert, so you can see what matters most at a glance
- Accept and reject calls directly from Fitbit Blaze when connected to a compatible smartphone
- Adding motivation to any workout is easy with on-screen controls for playlists and volume when playing music from your connected smartphone
- Track your night with automatic sleep tracking to know how long and well you sleep, plus set a silent alarm that gently vibrates to wake you.
- Long battery life of up to 5 days on a single charge lets you live your life and track your exercise, sleep and heart rate day and night, with the confidence you won’t lose a step or miss a beat.
- Compatible with more than 200 Android, iOS, and Windows mobile devices so you can access stats and motivational interactive tools, which help to motivate millions to achieve their goals within the community of Fitbit users they choose.

15 Customizable Infographic Templates for PowerPoint That Will Save You Time & Resources [Free Download]
As the old adage goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. And with marketers steadily increasing their visual content budget year over year, it seems that this visual exchange rate now carries even more weight.
In terms of visually displaying information, infographics serve as an ideal way to convey a complex idea in an interesting and manageable format. Whether it’s a comprehensive side-by-side comparison, a lengthy timeline, or robust collection of numbers and statistics, a well-designed infographic can help you make your point without fussing over a ton of words.
The big issue is, of course, the amount of time needed to create infographics. Nearly 66% of marketers reported that both lack of time and staff resources are the biggest challenge to creating effective visual marketing, according to a report from Digiday and Chute.
That’s where we come in. We’ve created 20 fully customizable infographic templates that will give you the inspiration and foundation you need to build your own infographics — 15 templates in PowerPoint with an additional five versions in Adobe Illustrator. New LaCie + Seagate drives bring USB-C, style, and high SSD/HDD capacities
Following its annual tradition, Seagate has announced a new collection of stylish, premium-priced drives in time for the 2016 CES, most now featuring USB-C and USB 3.1 connectors. Three of the drives carry Seagate’s LaCie branding; one is a handsome but Seagate-branded model.
The apparent flagship in the series is the LaCie Chromé ($1,100, shown above left), a 1TB SSD featuring a 10GB USB 3.1 interface with “up to 940MB/second speeds for intensive applications.” Described as “a trophy for tech connoisseurs,” Chromé is a Neil Poulton design that holds a boxy chrome SSD enclosure on an angle atop a circular pedestal. Additional models are discussed below…
Two more affordable options are the LaCie Porsche Design Mobile Drive ($110 and up) and Porsche Design Desktop Drive ($210 and up). Using traditional hard drive mechanisms, the silver all-aluminum Porsche Design drives recall the look of LaCie’s Mirror, but feature larger storage capacities: Mobile Drive can be had in 1TB, 2TB, or 4TB capacities, while Desktop Drive comes in 4TB, 5TB, or 8TB capacities, each with USB-C connectors and USB 3.0 speeds. The Desktop Drive promises to charge a USB-C laptop’s battery while connected.
Last up is the Seagate Backup Plus Ultra Slim (price TBD), which will be offered in 1TB and 2TB capacities, with gold or platinum dimpled enclosures. Measuring 9.6mm thick, the Ultra Slim is claimed to be “the world’s thinnest 2TB mobile hard drive,” over 50% thinner than competing 2TB drives; Seagate has not provided information on its speed or interface, making standard USB 3.0 most likely. Planned for release this quarter, Ultra Slim does not yet have pricing.

Apple leaks two exclusive Apple Watch Sport models for Chinese New Year
Update: Mashable says the exclusive Apple Watch models (pictured above) will feature yellow gold and silver aluminium color options with dark red straps.
Apple is making two exclusive Apple Watch Sport designs available for certain markets to celebrate the Chinese New Year, set to take place February 8 this year.
A translation of Apple’s announcement indicates that the models will be available for sale until February 22 or while supplies last.
Exclusive models for Chinese New Year…We’re celebrating the new year with two special Apple Watch Sport models, available until 22 February.
Apple will be offering the two special models in markets where the Chinese New Year is celebrated with the announcement message appearing briefly on its China, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan web pages before being removed earlier today…
While “Buy Now” and “Shop Now” links for a short time appeared on Apple’s website, it looks like the company might have launched the announcement a bit prematurely. It’s unclear when Apple actually plans to officially make the two exclusive models available for sale or how if at all they might be priced differently than other Sport models.
Apple last introduced new Apple Watch models in September when it introduced a new Sport collection with yellow and rose-gold anodized models and new Sport and Leather band options. (Via MacRumors)

Can You Prove that Your PMO Has Improved Project Delivery?
By Kiron D. Bondale
Some project management offices (PMO) are like Rodney Dangerfield – they don’t get no respect. While there are many causes for a PMO to be shut down, the inability to demonstrate their value proposition is one of the more common reasons.

Jaybird slates Freedom, X3 Bluetooth 4.0 athletic headphones for Q2 2016
Jaybird, maker of the popular sweatproof X and X2 Bluetooth headphones, has announced two new models planned for release in the second quarter of this year. Designed to appeal to athletes, the X3 ($150) and Freedom ($200) have both been redesigned from earlier, similarly-named models, and now use power-efficient Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology for full compatibility with current-generation iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches. Each will be available in five colors, and work with Jaybird’s MySound app to create user-defined equalizer settings…
Apart from darker color options, X3 looks substantially like its X-series predecessors, with fairly large earplug-style enclosures large enough to offer seven-hour battery life. As an easy upgrade for fans of the prior model, X3’s sound profile can be adjusted using the MySound app, storing your preferred balance of bass, mids, and highs directly in the headphones. Jaybird promises that an improved antenna design will improve wireless performance outdoors.
By comparison, the new Freedom earphones are a radical rethinking of an earlier, significantly clunkier Jaybird model. They now borrow the shapes, metal, and feel of Klipsch’s sleek Image X10 earphones, now paired with Jaybird’s athletic ear stabilizers and Comply ear tips to fit even the smallest ear canals.
Due to the smaller size of the earphones, Freedom will offer only four hours of battery life per charge, plus an additional four hours when connected to an included charging clip. When they’re released later this year, each version will come with an integrated remote control, microphone for phone calls, pouch-style carrying bag, and USB charging cable. The current-generation X2 model remains available in multiple colors from $140 and up.

Incipio debuts ClamCase keyboards for iPad Pro, mini 4 + Air 2, adds power, notifications
Having acquired Bluetooth keyboard maker ClamCase last year, Incipio today announced five new high-end iPad keyboards under the ClamCase name, including one for the iPad Pro, three for the iPad Air 2, and one for the iPad mini 4. Some of the keyboards feature premium features such as an integrated screen for notifications, a built-in battery pack, and keyboard backlighting. Details and a photo gallery are below…
The lineup begins with ClamCase+ for iPad Pro ($170) and iPad Air 2 ($150), each promising a backlit, full QWERTY keyboard inside a gray, silver, or gold housing, using Incipio’s 360-degree hinge to attach to each iPad. Interestingly, the iPad Pro version will include an Apple Pencil storage slot, and both versions will let you adjust keyboard backlight brightness. Both versions of ClamCase+ are expected in the second quarter of this year.
ClamCase Prompt for iPad Air 2 ($200) is unique in combining a Bluetooth keyboard with a built-in rear OLED screen, enabling users to receive notifications while the keyboard is covering the iPad’s screen. Incipio explains that it offers a “non-disruptive way to receive smartphone notifications during meetings, study sessions, and more;” it will be released in a white/silver version in the second quarter of 2016.
ClamCase+ Power for iPad Air 2 ($200) combines a black, backlit Bluetooth keyboard with a 6000mAh, 2.1-Amp battery that can recharge the connected iPad or another device; a micro-USB port recharges the keyboard and backup battery at the same time.
Last and least interesting is ClamCase Pro for iPad mini 4 ($130), which attaches to the latest mini using the company’s 360-degree hinge. It features Bluetooth 3 for quick, one-touch pairing; no mention is made of keyboard backlighting. It will debut in gray or silver/white in the first quarter of this year.

LastPass password manager update adds emergency access, sharing center and new UI [Video]
LastPass has updated its Mac and iOS apps and browser extensions to version 4.0 to add an emergency access feature and shared passwords, as well as a significantly revamped user-interface.
Emergency Access (shown below) is designed to ensure that you aren’t permanently locked out of your account if you ever forget your master password.
Emergency Access lets users designate trusted family, friends or colleagues to have access to their password vault in the case of an emergency. For added security, a user can require a waiting period between when an Emergency Access contact can request access to the vault and when access is granted. During the waiting period, users can decline an Emergency Access request to their vault.
The new Sharing Center is designed to provide a safe method of allowing multiple people access to the same account, such as when two or more family members want access to utility accounts …
The UI changes include the option of a grid view, and hover menus to provide faster access to launching, editing, sharing and deleting entries.
- A redesigned password vault, browser extension menus, and web vault at LastPass.com
- Large, bold visual elements with intuitive new navigation to simplify data management
- A choice between “Grid” view or “List” view to streamline workflow
- Quick “Add” menu in the vault, to instantly save a new site, Secure Note, Form Fill Profile or Folder
- Multi-select of items in the vault to easily make bulk changes
- Tools to help organize a LastPass vault and manage data, including hover menus with options to launch, edit, share or delete items
LastPass remains free to use on either mobile or desktop platforms, with a Premium membership allowing cross-platform use as well as additional features like Touch ID support for $12/year. The latest version can be downloaded from LastPass, and should be making its way to the app stores shortly. If you’re not familiar with password managers, check out our how-to guide.
You can check out the new look and features in the short video below.

Say hello to the first of the 12-inch MacBook clones: HP’s 12.5-inch fanless Core M EliteBook Folio
Apple’s 12-inch MacBook broke new ground when it opted for a fanless Core M processor in a form-factor that was all about creating the sleekest, most portable laptop around – and it was only a matter of time before Windows machines followed suit.
Like the MacBook, the HP EliteBook Folio strips back the ports to just USB-C and a headphone socket – though HP has opted for two rather than one USB-C ports. It weighs a touch more than the MacBook, but is marginally thinner. Design-wise, well, judge for yourself.
HP has gone further than Apple on the display, however. While the MacBook’s Retina display hits 226ppi, HP has squeezed in a 4K display to the top-of-the-range model, giving it a pixel density of 352ppi.
The EliteBook Folio goes on sale in March, with pricing starting at $999 – but that’s with the entry-level 1080p display rather than the 4K one.

17 Fun Corporate Outing Ideas and Team-Building Activities Everyone Will Enjoy
Starting to notice some droopy shoulders around the office? Does your team need a bit more pep in their step? Sounds like it’s time to plan a team outing.
Team outings are a great way to facilitate bonding with your team members, reduce employee stress, and give them the chance to get to know one another outside of the office.
And, you know, they’re really fun.
Download our free guide here for tips on how to build an effective inbound marketing team.
But how do you find ideas for a great team outing? Maybe you start with a Google search for “team outing ideas” and stumble upon an article that suggests “field trips” and “professional development activities.” Sounds like a starting point, but where’s the real excitement?
Next time you plan an outing for your team, cut the trust falls and get one of these awesome ideas on the calendar instead.
Company Team Outing Ideas
1) Volunteer
Giving time to support a good cause isn’t just good for the soul; it’s also a great way for your team members to bond. Place-based volunteering ideas include things like volunteering at a local soup kitchen, helping build a Habitat for Humanity house, or delivering gifts to children’s hospitals during the holidays. Skill-based volunteering is a cool way to stretch your employees’ expertise: It’s when your team volunteers their time and uses their professional skills — anything from marketing to app development to writing — to help a nonprofit.
Try VolunteerMatch.org for either type of volunteering opportunities, and Catchafire.org for skill-based volunteering opportunities.

2) Mystery Dinner
Mystery dinners are one of the most beloved traditions here at HubSpot. On a single night, you send a group of folks from different teams within your company to dinner somewhere in your city (or at someone’s house). The dinner is hosted by one of your company’s leaders and paid for by the company. These dinners allow random groups of people from the same company to spend an evening chock full of good food and conversation together.
What makes them a mystery dinner? The only thing participants should know about the dinner ahead of time is the date and time. Then, on the afternoon the dinner is supposed to take place, send each group an email with the name of the restaurant they’re going to and who they’ll be going with so they can arrange transportation together. Optional: Give every dinner host the name of a restaurant or bar to invite everyone to congregate at once the dinners are over.
3) Room Escape Games
Here’s a great bonding activity that requires leadership skills, teamwork, logic, and patience. Room escape games — Escape the Room, Puzzle Break, AdventureRooms, etc. — have become a wildly popular team-building exercise for groups around the globe. (Want to find one close to your office? Check out this directory for Escape the Room.)
Here’s how it works: A group of people get “locked” in a room for one hour. During that one hour, they have to find hidden objects, solve puzzles, and figure out clues to locate the key that will set them free. And it’s not easy: Only 20% of players actually make it out before the hour is up.

4) Kayaking/Canoeing
Nothing says “let’s work together” quite like trying not to end up in the water. Want to take advantage of the outdoors? Grab a paddle and head down to the closest river for a great spring or summer outing.
Many public rivers and ponds have boat houses where you can rent kayaks and canoes — and you can encourage folks to rent multi-person ones and pair up with people they don’t usually work with.
5) Trampoline Parks
Hey, who says trampolines are just for kids? Take your team to a trampoline park for some jumping fun and a chance to work off the day’s stress. Many cities have local places with trampoline activities — if you’re in the Boston area, check out Skyzone for trampoline dodgeball and basketball games.

6) Karaoke Night
What better way to get your employees to break out of their shells than to have them get up and sing some karaoke? You can even have a contest for best group karaoke performance. Bonus points if there are feather boas and cowboy hats involved. This works best for a more extroverted group, so if your team isn’t into strutting their stuff on stage, consider an idea on this list that caters more toward their personalities.

7) Something Embarrassingly Touristy
Embrace your city! Pick a hot tourist destination and go as a team. You can even do a Segway tour. (Fanny packs: optional.) It’ll be fun to laugh at how silly it feels to be a tourist in your own city, and you might even learn something new.

8) Kart Racing
Nothing like a little competition to bond a group together. An adrenaline-pumping event like kart racing is a great way to get employees to interact with one another in a totally new and fun way. Just make sure everyone pays attention during the safety lecture.
9) Laser Tag
Another great way to get your adrenaline pumping? A good old game of laser tag. Not only is it great fun, it’s also an opportunity for employees to exercise their strategy and logic skills, as well as teamwork skills. Bonus: Make teams ahead of time and have people dress up.
10) Painting Class
If you’re looking for a slightly more relaxing activity, take a group painting class. Paint Nite hosts painting classes by local artists at various bars throughout major cities for painting on canvases, wine glasses (like in the picture below), and so on. It’s a great way to let your team members unwind, catch up over some drinks, and express their creativity.
11) Cooking Class
In the mood for something a little more… culinary? Change up the usual outing to a bar or your local restaurant, and try a cooking class. Through a service such as Kitchensurfing you can hire a professional chef to come cook a fancy meal for you in your home or office kitchen. Between the multiple courses prepared before your eyes, your team will have plenty of time to strike up conversation and enjoy the delicious aromas.

12) Sports Game
Round up the team and head out to a sports game. What a fantastic way to rev up team spirit while combining both competition and camaraderie.

Team-Building Activities, Games, and Exercises for Work
13) Scavenger Hunt
Find a beautiful day, break everyone out into groups, and have a scavenger hunt around the city. You can organize one yourself, or use an app like Stray Boots. Your team will feel nice and refreshed after some fresh air and fun challenges. Be sure to take lots of silly pictures — you can even have a slideshow when everyone regroups at the end.
14) Cook-Off
Here’s a culinary team-building activity that could end in dessert or disaster — in a fun way. Creating new dishes together requires creativity and will require everyone to put their team and leadership skills into action. Divide your team into smaller teams, pick a food category, and challenge each team to whip up something delicious. The category could be anything from ice cream to salsa to pizza.
One fun twist you could add? Pick a single ingredient that all teams must use, like maple syrup or Oreos. Or, have each team get creative with the shape of their food — you can make pizzas into almost any shape.

15) Improv Workshop
Comedy and improv events are fun, interactive experiences that’ll have your employees roaring with laughter while teaching them useful communication and soft skills, like focus and trust. Depending on your budget, you could do anything from simply playing improv games with your employees to bringing in professionals to run competitive, fast-paced activities.

16) Board Game Tournament
Here’s one way to spark your team members’ competitive sides without having to leave the office. Organize a team-wide board game tournament. Especially if your team is pretty big, it may be easiest to pick a single game, and then have people sign up for specific time slots where they’re free to leave their desks and spend some time playing the game. Some great games with reasonable play times include Boggle, Jenga, or even games using good ol’ playing cards. Don’t forget to incentivize with prizes for first, second, and third place.

17) Professional Development Workshop
Want to encourage your employees to bond while providing them with an opportunity to learn and further their career? Offer a shared learning experience either at your office or at an off-site workshop or conference. The activity could be specifically related to your employees’ jobs, or it could be something more broad, like a negotiation or leadership skills workshop.
Now you’re ready to show your team a great time while increasing their happiness and creating a great company culture. And hey, you might just be the “cool boss” now. How cool would that be?
What are your favorite creative team outing ideas? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Biometric company’s lawsuit accuses Apple of underhand tactics to gain access to heart-rate tech for Apple Watch
Biometric specialist Valencell – whose technology is licensed by iRiver, LG, Sony and others – has filed a lawsuit accusing Apple of using underhand tactics to gain access to its patented technology for use in the Apple Watch.
The company claims that Apple violated three of its patents for improving the accuracy and reliability of heart-rate data when using the photoplethysmography (PPG) approach used in the Apple Watch. But the lawsuit alleges more than just patent infringement, reports AI: it also claims that Apple used deceptive techniques to get access to the technology …
Specifically, it suggests that Apple feigned interest in a partnership agreement with Valencell, and that IP addresses belonging to Apple were used to download white papers using fake contact details.
Apple […] obtained such white papers by providing fictitious information. On March 27, 2013 and May 5, 2014, one or more Apple agents downloaded the “PerformTek Precision Biometrics: Engaging the Burgeoning Mobile Health and Fitness Market” white paper from Valencell using fictitious names. On March 10, 2014 and April 23, 2015, one or more Apple agents downloaded the “Earbud-Based Sensor for the Assessment of Energy Expenditure, Heart Rate, and VO2 max” white paper from Valencell using fictitious names. On April 1, 2015 an Apple agent downloaded the “Earbud-Based Sensor for the Assessment of Energy Expenditure, Heart Rate, and VO2 max” white paper from Valencell using a fictitious
It alleges that seven Apple employees did this. The lawsuit names these individuals, and says that all seven not only worked on the Apple Watch, but were specifically involved in development of the heart-rate sensor.
A separate lawsuit makes similar allegations against Fitbit for technology used in the Charge HR and Surge.
In the run-up to the launch of the Watch, Apple focused attention on the advanced heart-rate monitoring capabilities of the device, whose accuracy has been found to rival dedicated monitors. The company adjusted the behaviour of the heart-rate monitor in watchOS 1.0.1.
We have invited Apple to comment on the allegations and will update with any response received.

Resolutions Your Publication Should Make in 2016
No matter what industry you’re in, the first weeks of January always feel like a big storm has hit and passed. In a few weeks, your year is going to start ramping up again, and 2016 will start to feel like a routine. Big projects will start to take off, and you’ll miss those ‘moments between the lines’ that you’ve loved for brainstorming, tinkering, and exploring.
Remember that downtime is cyclic: it won’t last forever. As you begin to ramp up for the new year, don’t look solely at major changes you can make at your company. Focus also on housekeeping, and find subtle ways to accomplish the things that you’ve otherwise been putting off. Many times, these smaller improvements can snowball into larger projects or initiatives.
Here are a few ideas to get you started with both large and small changes for your publication:
1) Get Your Lists in Shape
No matter how engaged your email list might be, your performance benchmarks could still be better. Why? Over time, email lists become clogged machines. Once-active subscribers lose interest, your value proposition starts being relevant, and audiences stop paying attention to your messaging.
No matter what steps you take to course-correct this pattern, you can’t. Instead, you should embrace your shifting audience base and get your lists in shape. Take some basic steps to make sure that you’re working with your cleanest lists possible:
- Phase out your ‘aged’ non-engaging subscribers
- Trim down contacts who aren’t essential to your core business (i.e. trim down the fat)
- Eyeball your segments to make sure that groupings are still relevant and make sense
With your audiences returning from vacation, the beginning of the year is a great time to clean up your lists and make sure that everything is in check.
2) Commit to Sending Fewer Emails
With a new year comes new energy. You might feel many bursts of inspiration, along with a desire to fire off some new email campaigns.
Do yourself a favor and hold back: your audiences don’t share your same enthusiasm. As interested as they might be in your company, their attention spans are spread thin across the hundreds of emails that they’re receiving each day. Instead of sending more messages, make each note count more. Here’s a simple set of exercises to try:
- Rather than planning out 10 emails to send, figure out 10 creative ways to segment your lists
- Determine how to make each email more impactful among the segments that you’ve defined
- A/B test several varations of your newsletter, tweaking both headlines and body content
You might consider reaching out to your customers and subscribers and asking to conduct qualitative interviews. Start by diving deep into the efficacy of your current email campaigns. Figure out what you can do better. For maximum impact, tailor improvements to specific customer segments.
3) Put Mobile First
When it comes to your mobile strategy, the days of comfortable procrastination are over. As of May 2015, Google says that there are now more searches on mobile than on desktop devices.
Consumers are relying on mobile to find critical information, and you can’t afford to lag behind. From your email campaigns to your core browsing experience, you need to ensure a mobile responsive look and feel (at the very least). Focus on your landing pages and newsletter campaigns to start with and use website analytics data to determine where on your site you should focus next.
Mobile may be mainstream, but it’s not too late to get ahead of the curve and develop an amazing mobile experience. The beginning of 2016 is a great time to prioritize mobile as a core part of your strategic vision.
4) Go on the Offense Against Ad Blockers
For the last several years, ad blockers have been on the rise. Publishers are well-aware of this fact: according to one report, there are now 198 million active adblock users around the world, with publishers losing tens of billions of dollars a year, as a result.
The reason for this trend is simple: consumers have spent years feeling deceived by the advertising industry, and they’re tired of it. For online audiences, time is a valuable asset, and few people want to spend their time x-ing out of unnecessary pop-up windows with irrelevant messaging.
It’s time for publishers to go on the office against ad blockers. But the trick here isn’t to fight this consumer behavior: it’s to embrace it. Instead of forcing audiences to sit through ads that they don’t want to see, focus on diversifying your revenue streams.
If you’re looking for a good resource to point you in the right direction, check out HubSpot’s 2015 Publisher Benchmarks Report. Cliff notes: the media industry is going through significant change, and it’s a great time to innovate. Print is on its way out, new tech adoption is on the rise, and publishers are exploring revenue options beyond subscriptions.
The beginning of 2016 is a great time to sit back and brainstorm alternative ways to monetize. Think about education products that you can create, webinars you can host, events that you can organize, and creative ways that your media company can deliver value to both audiences and advertisers.
Get Moving
What these New Year’s resolutions share in common is that they’re all long-term: you’ll need more than early January to implement these major audience engagement initiatives. The point is that you need to get started. Time flies, and it will be 2017 in no time.

11 Impressive B2C Campaigns That B2B Marketers Can Learn From
Time for another brainstorm session …
After scratching out a list of possibilities, you turn to your computer for inspiration. Consider your go-to sources: Do you immediately navigate to your competitor’s blog? Are your bookmarks filled with favorite content from companies in your industry?
Constructive thinking doesn’t happen inside of a vacuum. Instead, our best ideas come when we take a step outside the scope of our work and seek inspiration from unlikely sources. For B2B marketers, this means that the creative spark you’re looking for might not be found directly within your industry. In fact, there’s actually a lot B2B marketers can learn by observing the approach of B2C companies.
Of course, B2B and B2C marketing have their long list of differences. With B2B marketing, the door is open to technical jargon and long, deliberate marketing funnels. Yet, B2C marketers often have more room to stretch their imagination with lofty expectations for either witty or tear-jerking campaigns.
But despite the dissimilarity between the two, there is an opportunity to surface fresh ideas to by exploring out-of-the-box examples. And with a bit of inspiration and original execution, your B2B campaigns can rival the creativity of the most buzz-worthy consumer marketing.
11 B2C Campaigns for B2B Marketers to Learn from in 2016
1) Chobani
It is easy to think that only companies with an extensive catalog of products can pull of beautiful visual marketing. But what about when you specialize in one item?
With colorful photos of kale Caesar salad, mushroom flatbread pizza, and peach cheesecake, Chobani is a great example of a brand that leverages diverse photography to highlight a single product.
Even if you market for a niche B2B business with one main product, there are still endless possibilities for your visual marketing. As you determine a visual strategy for social media, especially Instagram, start by thinking beyond the product itself to the many ways or locations your product can be used.
2) Tesco
Based in the UK, Tesco is an international grocery store and a reliable source of information for anyone hoping to make their home run a little smoother. On their blog, Tesco Living, shoppers can find how-to articles with easy-to-follow instructions and ample pictures. Topics range from family favorite holiday recipes to summertime craft ideas for your preschooler.
By thoughtfully identifying common challenges of grocery shoppers, Tesco Living proves to be an exceptional example of helpful inbound marketing. Tesco then continues to impress by providing the solutions on a clean, easily navigable platform.
3) Starbucks
Starbucks was an early adopter of social media and today continues to use industry-leading photos to attract customers. However, most B2B marketers can’t say they have a product as enticing as a cup of coffee to fill their social calendar. Nevertheless, marketers of any industry would value from the coffee chain’s omni-channel approach to marketing and selling.
Starbucks creates a user-friendly experience through a myriad of special features on its Facebook page, including special contests, a store locator, international links, and job postings.
To streamline the buying process even further, Starbucks created an app to simplify mobile payments and bypass lengthy lines. While it’s unrealistic that all companies should aspire to create their own native app, Starbucks shows how brands should smooth the buyer’s journey with each interaction.
4) Spotify
Few brands master personalization quite like Spotify. By leveraging the user’s music interests, Spotify only sends emails with content that is both relevant and rewarding — whether it’s an announcement of their favorite band releasing a new album or news of a local concert.
However, the music streaming platform shows that personalization is no longer just for email marketing. Spotify now curates Discover Weekly, a customized playlist filled with songs an individual user has yet to uncover. To close out the year, Spotify presented each user with a “Year in Music” microsite telling the story of their 2015 music habits.
As you consider how to add a human touch to your marketing campaigns, think how you can expand beyond email personalization tokens to impress your customers.
5) Herschel Supply Co.
Adventure is the theme of Herschel Supply’s visual marketing. Browse the backpack retailer’s Instagram account to find breathtaking photos of mountaintop views and chaotic city streets.
However, Herschel Supply gives marketers more than just high quality photos to envy. The majority of the brand’s visual content comes directly from their customers posting with the hashtag #WellTravelled.
Like Herschel Supply, consider how your brand can use social media to create a community, not simply a list of followers. This way, customers become stakeholders in your marketing and voices in how your product story is told.
6) Everlane
No matter the platform, each piece of Everlane’s content works toward the same goal: transparency. By illustrating the “how” and “why” behind what they do, Everlane breaks down the barrier between the customer and their favorite brand. For example, the fashion retailer uses Snapchat to send messages to their customers that feel honest and personal. And the brand’s Instagram account features backstage shots of the clothing production process.
If you are looking for a new approach to gain trust and loyalty from the businesses you sell to, consider how you can increase transparency as you explain sourcing and pricing on your social media and blog.
7) Taco Bell
There are few ways to illustrate your brand personality quite like including humor. But before you decide there is no room in B2B marketing to pull a joke, consider the approach of Taco Bell. On the fast food chain’s Twitter account, you’ll find a robust collection of hand-drawn doodles and goofy GIFs.
However, it’s not just Taco Bell’s young audience that allows them to execute their humor so well. Credit goes to the brand’s bold, consistent voice. Taco Bell does not test the waters with a few jokes here and there, but commits completely. Whatever you determine your brand voice to be — from witty and sarcastic to encouraging and empowering — strive for consistency.
8) Threadless
There is no doubt that Threadless knows their audience well. On the retailer’s blog, you’ll rarely catch the writers talking about their funky t-shirt designs. Instead, Threadless has created a content haven for graphic designers and illustrators with just the right touch of quirkiness and personality.
Each post is packed with images, showcasing doodles straight from the desks of their customers. Meanwhile, Threadless understands the reader’s desire for visual inspiration and keeps the copy to a minimum. Of course, this approach is not right for every brand. But the more you know your audience, the more you’ll be able to cater your content to the style your readers like best.
9) TOMS
Visual storytelling has always been a key ingredient in the marketing success of TOMS. By sharing the stories behind their one-for-one giving model, TOMS is able to gain customers who are all-in with the company’s mission. Therefore, it’s of little surprise that their social media accounts often look more like the work of photojournalists than marketers.
So, when you already know you do something well, why not pursue it further? This is exactly what TOMS has done with the release of their latest piece of visual marketing, a virtual reality video that takes the audience alongside on a giving trip. Viewers can drag the frame or tilt their smartphone for a seamless 360-degree view of the surroundings. While visual marketing may not be your strongest asset, determine what you do best and consider how you can push the bar and build more buzz around your brand.
10) EDEKA
EDEKA reminds marketers that commercials don’t have to feel quite like commercials. In their 2015 holiday advertisement, the German supermarket tells the story of a grandfather who will do just about anything to get his busy children and grandchildren home for the holidays. If you’re looking to explore video marketing, make note of both the empathy and character development used to transform this commercial into a sharable piece of inbound content.
Unsure how your B2B brand could use storytelling to market your product? Remember, you don’t have to bring your audience to tears. But making a human connection through storytelling could be just what your brand needs to add interest to your B2B marketing.
11) Purina
Once you pinpoint your winning campaign idea, challenge yourself to imagine all the possible formats your content could take. Consider Purina as an example. The pet food company partnered with BuzzFeed to create an adorable video sharing the first day of bonding between a man and his new puppy. But, Purina didn’t stop there. Sequels were made to continue the tale, including “Our First Poop” and “We Met a Girl.” The campaign is then wrapped up in a microsite to guide people through the adventure of raising a puppy.
As content marketing blurs the line between retailer and publisher, consider how you can expand the scope of your campaigns and experiment with new media and storytelling trends.
