The Anatomy of a Highly Shareable List Post [Infographic]

science-behind-list-posts.jpeg

List posts, also called list-based posts or “listicles,” are one of the most popular blog post types out there. Not only do readers like list posts, but blog post authors like to write them too. Why? Because they tend to generate (on average) more clickthroughs, more engagement, more social sharing, more dwell time, more organic traffic, more conversions, more comments, and a lower bounce rate than other blog post types.

Whew! What’s not to love?

But writing a great list post isn’t as simple as it sounds. If you want your posts to perform really well, you’re going to need to make sure they include all the elements of an optimized and highly shareable list post.

For example, did you know headlines with odd numbers generate 20% more clicks than headlines with even numbers? Little tweaks like this can have a big impact on your post’s performance.

To help show you what an optimized list post looks like, the folks at Siege Media created the infographic below. Check it out to learn great tips for creating highly shareable list posts.

Role of the Project Management Officer in the IT Industry

role-of-the-project-management-officer-in-the-IT-IndustryProjects are the set of defined activities and tasks undertaken to achieve the specified goals in allotted period of time. Large business organizations generally have a number of projects underway at the same time and the success of entire business depends on the effective implementation and completion of projects. For many years, IT industries and business organizations have been struggling to deliver the projects on time. In order to execute the projects in a systematic way, they need the assistance of an expert professional or manager who will follow a unique approach for planning, executing, organizing, motivating and controlling the resources.

Ensuring that all the business is managed in a controlled way

Project Management Officers are the backbone of business organization as they underpin the project delivery mechanism by ensuring that all the business is managed in a controlled way. The exact role of Project Management Officer will depend on needs of the business organization. Different PMO’s perform different functions within the organization but all have to focus on the business development and project outcomes. Generally, PMO will distinguish the characteristics of project management in order to establish a solid foundation of available project information prior to the rolling up business enterprise level information.

Follow a common set of principles

Project Management Officer involves common set of principles, templates and practices for managing projects. He maintains standards for projects as per the client’s requirement. Creating project management templates will also implement standard components that can be reused to save time and money. It is the responsibility of the PMO’s to ensure that the project management standards are followed by regular performing assessments or not. Moreover, this process will also produce feedback on a regular basis.  For all business projects, he tracks the status of projects with regular updates from the team leaders and associated members. He will compile the collected information and report this to the management. Generally, the normal way of presenting the project reports and related information is using project dashboards that provide a transparent and clear way to track each and every activity of the projects.

Provide guidance for better understanding

PMO’s tend to develop a centre of excellence for the project management and they also assist the associated team and project managers by providing guidance so that they will be able to understand how the management process goes on. In many IT industries and business organizations, PMO plays a key role in assisting the teams and leaders by explaining the project execution process. He also manages and facilitates the portfolio management process by implemented a unique and standard approach. This process includes various management tasks like capturing the project requests for every division or team and ensuring that there is complete information for assessing projects or not, maintaining up-to-date reports of projects, implementing prioritisation models and scores to help assess for the request approval, managing a resource forecast or resource capacity plan in order to understand availability of resources for the projects.

European investigation into legality of Apple’s tax arrangements in Ireland expanded & extended

the-eu-says-apple-may-have-avoided-billions-in-taxes-over-10-years

The long-running investigation into the legality of Apple’s tax arrangements in Ireland has been expanded, with the European Commission now seeking additional information from the Irish government, reports the FT. This means that the investigation is likely to be extended well into next year. A ruling had originally been expected before the end of the year.

While Irish authorities had expected the case to be concluded soon, they have instead been sent bulky sets of supplementary questions, meaning it will be difficult to reach a final verdict until after the 2016 election, which is expected as early as February […]

The Irish finance ministry confirmed that the government was supplying the requested additional information to the commission. “We do not expect any decision until after the new year,” said a spokesman.

If the ruling goes against Apple, it could face a bill for billions of Euros in underpaid tax …

Ireland was keen to encourage Apple to base its European operations in the country, and offered a special deal to the company. Instead of paying the normal 12.5% corporation tax, Apple would pay just 2.5%.

It should be noted that if the arrangements were found to be illegal, it would be the Irish government, and not Apple, found to have broken the law – by offering illegal state support to a business. Apple would, however, have to pay the back taxes accrued over up to ten years. The company warned shareholders of this fact back in April.

Similar arrangements with Starbucks and Fiat in Luxembourg and the Netherlands have already been ruled illegal.

Some had wondered whether Apple would maintain its presence in Ireland if the ruling went against it, but it was announced during a recent visit by Tim Cook (where a slip of the tongue caused some controversy) that Apple would be adding a further 1,000 jobs by mid-2017.

Google Maps for iOS gains up-to-date gas prices, popular business hours

google-maps-lead

Google’s Maps app for iPhone and iPad got a small but useful update on the App Store today. The latest version of the Google Maps iOS app now includes a couple of handy features.

First up, and undoubtedly the most useful for drivers is the up-to-date gas prices in the US and Canada. The feature was included in the Android version of Google’s app a couple of months ago and lets users check nearby gas stations to see which has the most affordable prices. You can find prices simply be searching for ‘gas’ or ‘gas stations’ in the search field and Google Maps will automatically bring up the nearest options and list pricing for those locations.

Business hours have been included in the app for some time, but today’s update also lets you check when is best to avoid/visit particular businesses. Like its online search and maps tools, the updated iPhone app brings the ability check popular visiting hours for local stores and outlets. Now you can see what you always knew about any business or retail location: It starts getting busy after lunch.

Morgan Stanley predicts AAPL will see its first ever drop in iPhone sales next year

iphone-sales

An investment note by Morgan Stanley Katy Huberty predicts that Apple will see its iPhone sales fall by 5.7% in Apple’s 2016 financial year, reports Business Insider. The prediction is significant for two reasons: if realised, it would be the first time since the launch of the iPhone that sales have fallen year-on-year – and the forecast is made by a noted Apple bull.

Morgan Stanley thinks that Financial Year 2016 iPhones sales will be 218 million – a 5.7% drop — while Calendar Year 2016 sales will be 224,000 — a 2.9% drop. These predictions are significantly below Huberty’s previous estimates, of 247 million for FY2016 and 252 CY2016.

One of the reasons given isn’t new – high smartphone penetration in developed markets – but Huberty says there is a second reason …

Huberty notes “higher prices in international markets,” citing China as a specific example.

KGI’s Ming-Chi Kuo recently predicted that Apple could see slowing iPhone sales early in 2016, but said that this was due to the usual seasonal effect following the holidays, and that the expected 4-inch model could reduce the scale of the slowdown.

Huberty does, though, expect Apple’s total revenue to grow by 2% next year thanks to the Apple Watch and other new services.

Say goodbye to food poisoning: the $250 iPhone-based ‘chemistry lab in your pocket’ is on the way

chemlab

iPhones have already been used for an impressive number of medical applications. We’ve seen them used to screen for skin cancer, manage diabetes, prevent blindness, provide eye examinations and diagnose everything from sleep apnea to bipolar episodes. But the next step could be a $250 organic chemistry lab we can carry in our pocket.

The WSJ has been talking to a couple of startups working in this field, including 6SensorLabs which has a device that can – with the help of a smartphone – detect whether a food really is gluten-free.

The Nima from 6SensorLabs is an organic-chemistry lab small enough to carry in your pocket. Right now it is only good for one thing: detecting gluten in foods at minuscule concentrations, as little as 20 parts per million, the FDA’s threshold for declaring a food “gluten-free.”

The company says that this could be just the start, with future versions able to detect the bacteria that cause food poisoning …

In the future, says 6SensorLabs co-founder and Chief Executive Shireen Yates, it could be adapted to recognize all manner of proteins—including ones that would allow it to recognize bacterial contaminants such as E. coli and salmonella.

By accomplishing in two minutes an analysis that would normally require days to obtain from a lab, it’s hoped that suppliers and restaurants will conduct regular testing. Even individual consumers could do so, though you’ll need to lay out around $5 for each of the disposable ‘reaction chambers’ needed.

SCiO from Consumer Physics of Israel says that it’s possible that its camera-based technology – used to identify substances by measuring the spectrum of light they reflect – could even be built into future smartphones.

Apple has more interest in health than most, with its ResearchKit platform opening up the possibility of open-source research along with use by big pharma.

How to Manage Your Entire Marketing Budget [Free Budget Planner Templates]

Budget_Templates_Marketing.jpeg

Here’s a hypothetical for you: Let’s say your company has decided to invest in a website redesign so you can improve lead generation, and you’re responsible for managing the project. Naturally, one of the first questions you have is, “How much is this website redesign going to cost?”

The answer, of course, is “it depends.” Are you simply switching to a new template and adding some new CTAs, or are you migrating your entire site to a new platform?

If only there were a way to organize your answers to all of these questions; a place where you could enter in estimated costs for all of your line items, and then compare your projected budget to what you actually end up spending …

Good news! Our latest offer, 8 Free Budget Planner Templates to Manage Your Marketing Spend, has got you covered. Included in our eight budget templates bundle is a template to manage your website redesign … as well as templates for both Excel and Google Sheets to help you track your content budget, paid advertising budget, event budget, and more.

Click here to download your 8 free marketing budget templates.

Here’s a peek:

Aligning Your Budget With Your Marketing Goals

What you spend and where you spend it will depend on what you’re trying to accomplish. This is especially true when it comes to paid advertising like search and display ads, social media ads, and so on.

HubSpot’s demand generation marketer Jessica Webb says this about how your costs can change when focusing on lead generation vs. lead conversion: “The majority of money you spend on paid efforts is usually calculated based on volume of clicks or impressions. Because of this, you’ll often want to put more budget toward campaigns with higher-volume offers and audiences.”

“An example, a tweet or Facebook ad promoting a lead generation offer that leans more top of the funnel will likely receive more clicks than something that falls more toward the middle or bottom of the funnel,” she explains.

Your paid advertising costs will also change depending on how wide of an audience you are attempting to reach. “You can look at Twitter advertising as an example,” Webb explains. “You have to option to target your campaigns based on users’ interests or keywords searched for. Interests are a much broader category, whereas smaller pockets of users are searching for any given keyword, therefore your interests-based audience is going to be much larger and require a larger budget.”

To keep better track of your paid advertising efforts, download the Paid Advertising Budget Template (included in the 8 Budget Templates to Manage Your Marketing Spend).

Beware Hidden Costs

One of the great advantages to having and maintaining a budget spreadsheet is that it helps you avoid those end-of-the-quarter or end-of-the-year freak outs when you realize, “Whoa … what did I spend all that money on?”

In many cases, unanticipated costs can force marketers to fork over cash that they didn’t plan on spending. Product marketing offers a perfect example. According HubSpot’s VP of Marketing Meghan Keaney Anderson, it’s easy to forget that successfully marketing your products and services requires more than just promotion.

“When people allocate budget for product marketing they tend to think in terms of product launches and promotional activities,” Anderson explains. “That’s certainly an important part of it, but another area of focus to remember is setting aside resources to conduct research and message testing long before the product ever goes to market. Having conversations with customers about the pain points your product will ultimately address is critical to shaping the messaging and having a successful launch.”

To better manage your product marketing efforts, download the Product Marketing Budget Template (included in the 8 Budget Templates to Manage Your Marketing Spend).

Remember Where Your Priorities Lie

Marketing is overflowing with add-ons and extras, upsells, and “premium” versions. One of the best ways to assess what’s nice to have versus what’s absolutely necessary is to (you guessed it) organize all of your expenses. By keeping tabs on where your budget is being allocated, and cross-checking that spending with the results you’re getting, it will be much easier to figure out what should keep getting budget and what should get kicked to the curb.

For an example, let’s look to the world of public relations. In PR, there are countless tools to which you can allocate budget, which could leave you overspending where it doesn’t matter — and underspending where it does.

“Tools abound to help PR practitioners not only create and distribute great content and find and target key stakeholders, but to ultimately measure reach and effectiveness,” says Nathaniel Eberle, HubSpot’s Director of PR & Brand. “The key is making sure you’re laser-focused on who you’re setting out reach and influence, then ensuring that your budget supports how they’ll most likely want to receive (and share) your key messages.

“As the media and digital landscape evolves at breakneck speed, continually reassessing the tools, services, and programs you’re employing is a great way to determine real-time ROI of your overall spend. Today’s measurement tool may be worthless to you tomorrow.”

To get better at prioritizing your PR line items, download the PR Budget Template (included in the 8 Budget Templates to Manage Your Marketing Spend).

It’s Not All About the Benjamins

When you open up these budget templates and check out all the various expenses detailed in them, don’t fret if you can’t tick every box. I’m not advocating for an “always spend more” approach to marketing. I’m advocating for an “always spend smart” approach. The expenses listed out aren’t mandatory — they’re just meant to guide your thinking and to help ensure that you haven’t overlooked any hidden costs.

With that in mind, here’s the full list of budget templates included in the bundle.

The 8 Marketing Budget Templates You Need to Manage Your Marketing Spend

With the 8 Free Budget Planner Templates to Manage Your Marketing Spend, you’ll be able to manage all of the moving pieces of your budget at a monthly and quarterly level. Use the Excel version of the templates to keep all of your budgets in one place. When you download the zip file, you’ll find a separate file for each marketing team, as well as a Master Budget Template to maintain a high-level view of your overall expenses.

Interested in sharing your marketing budget across a larger team? Try the Google Sheets version of the same eight templates to share access with other Gmail users. For the Google Sheets templates, each team budget is found in a separate tab of the same Google Sheet. No matter which version you choose, each budget is optimized with the same line items, tips, and graphs. Read on to learn how to use each budget template.

3) Content Budget Template

Download the Content Budget Template here.

The budget required for creating and promoting content can vary greatly from organization to organization. For example, while some organizations keep most of their content operations in-house, others rely more heavily on freelancers and contractors. And while some use many different software products, publishing tools, and services, others take a much simpler approach.

Our Content Budget Template is designed to cover as many content-related bases as possible. So, if you see any expenses listed that don’t apply to your organization, go ahead and delete them. (That’s the beauty of spreadsheets: You can customize them to your specific needs.)

4) Paid Advertising Budget Template

Download the Paid Advertising Budget Template here.

Paid advertising: Does it really qualify as an inbound marketing tactic/channel? That is a loaded question, my friends, and one that I don’t have room to answer in-depth in this post. What I can tell you for sure is that you can do paid advertising in an “inboundy” way — i.e. by targeting specific buyer personas and using paid advertising as a supplement to your organic efforts to help drive awareness and conversion opportunities.

Measuring the effectiveness of your paid advertising campaigns is also paramount to doing things the inbound way. Using our Paid Advertising Budget Template, you can keep tabs on your monthly (and quarterly) ad spending, and then cross-reference the amounts with your lead-generation metrics to determine your cost-per-lead.

5) Public Relations Budget Template

Download the Public Relations Budget Template here.

Public relations expenses amount to more than just paying for press releases. From reputation monitoring software, to traveling (e.g., to events and tradeshows) to applying for awards, there are many PR costs that can be all too easy to overlook.

To ensure you’re accounting for all of your organization’s PR-related expenses, check out our Public Relations Budget Template.

6) Branding & Creative Budget Template

Download the Creative Budget Template here.

In order to produce high-quality, innovative graphics, videos, and other content, the branding and creative teams of today need more than just Photoshop … a lot more. One of the largest — and often most overlooked — expenses is storage.

If your organization is producing a lot of video, storage is especially important. Because as it turns out, when budgeting for video storage, you shouldn’t be thinking on a megabyte (MB) or even a gigabyte (GB) scale, but on a terabyte (TB) scale. FYI: 1 terabyte = 1 trillion bytes. You can keep track of all your storage costs (and other branding and creative costs) using our free template.

7) Website Redesign Budget Template

Download the Website Redesign Budget Template here.

Budgeting for a website redesign can be seriously tricky. With so many moving pieces to consider, there is a lot of room for underestimating or miscalculating costs. We created our Website Redesign Budget Template so you can keep all of your redesign-related expenses in one convenient location.

Unsure if your current website is right for a redesign? Check out this HubSpot research report: Does Your Website Make the Grade? Chances Are, It’s Barely Passing.

8) Event Budget Template

Download the Event Budget Template here.

When planning an event, the associated costs can seem obvious at first. There’s the venue to consider, of course. And the P.A. system and microphones. And then the costs associated with booking and bringing in presenters/performers. That’s pretty much it, right?

Wrong.

For example, does the venue come with tables/chairs, or will you have to rent those separately? Do you want your attendees to wear name tags, and if so, will you be printing out the name tags ahead of time or will attendees be writing their own names on blank tags? If the latter, have you factored in the pens or markers you’ll need to accommodate that? As you can see, planning for an event can lead you down many rabbit holes.

Use our Event Budget Template to stay organized.

Security researcher claims to have downloaded sensitive data from 13M accounts of scamware app MacKeeper

Server-Rack

As if conning people out of money for a piece of scamware that does nothing useful weren’t bad enough, a security researcher claims that extremely poor security has allowed him to access sensitive data for more than 13M MacKeeper accounts.

I have recently downloaded over 13 million sensitive account details related to MacKeeper, Zeobit, and/or Kromtech […] stuff like names, email addresses, usernames, password hashes, computer name, ip address, software license and activation codes, type of hardware (ex: “macbook pro”), type of subscriptions, phone numbers and computer serial numbers.

The data was accessed by white-hat researcher Chris Vickery, who previously exposed data breaches at MLB, ATP, Slipknot and a network of charter K-12 schools in California …

Vickery, who posted a screenshot of the folder structure (below), said on Reddit that the server was completely unprotected.

Six hours after making this post (and it being at the top of the Apple subreddit), the database is still completely unprotected […] No log in required at all.

The researcher also noted that while passwords were encrypted, the system used was extremely weak.

MD5 with no salt… so very weak hashing

Vickery says that he will reveal more details about how he was able to access the data after the company has secured it.

If you’re looking for genuine software to clean and speed up your Mac, check out our roundup.

Apple almost halves price of iPhone 5s in India as it seeks to accelerate growth

IPhone_5S_main_camera

With Apple’s ambitious expansion program in China well underway, the company now appears to be seeking to boost its market share in the next growth market, India. CNET reports that Apple has almost halved the price of the iPhone 5s from 44,500 Rupees ($665) to 25,000 Rupees ($370).

The price cut appears to be a move by the Californian company to increase its penetration in India, the world’s third largest smartphone market after China and the USA, where the bulk of phones sold are sub-$300. As of quarter 3 of 2015, Apple is not even among the top 5 smartphone vendors in India, a market that IDC Research predicts will overtake the US by 2017.

Although India is a huge market for smartphones, it is currently quite a different market to China, suggesting that Apple needs a significantly different approach …

China has a large and growing middle-class in urban areas, who can afford premium products. India, in contrast, has a much smaller market for premium products as yet, with the greatest opportunity in the mid-range.

“To drive volume, Apple will need to keep focus on older iPhone generations,” IDC’s Kiranjeet Kaur said

Apple is also hampered by the high import taxes India applies to products not manufactured in the country. Samsung is able to sell its products at more competitive prices thanks to local manufacturing.

It was announced in the summer that Foxconn planned to build 10-12 factories in India by 2020, though it was not known whether production would include iPhones. Tim Cook discussed the possibility of local manufacturing with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September.

Apple has been working hard to grow sales in India with a large boost to its reseller network, financing plans and cheaper hardware. The company has also been in discussion with the Indian government about relaxing laws which prevent it opening its own retail stores in the country.

The move may also be an attempt to move iPhone 5s inventory ahead of the launch of the iPhone 6c which is rumored for release in Spring.

18 Brilliant Examples of Holiday Marketing Campaigns

best-holiday-marketing-campaigns.jpeg

Every holiday season, it’s like the floodgates burst open: All of a sudden, there are holiday marketing campaigns everywhere. Every business is trying to cash in on the spending frenzy with emails, social media posts, television advertisements, and other related efforts.

While these campaigns can sometimes seem out of control, many brands out there actually do their holiday marketing very, very well.

How? They create campaigns that delight customers. They evoke emotions and promote sharing. And sometimes, they connect people with their loved ones or partner with a charitable organization.

Great holiday marketing campaigns come in many different shapes and sizes. Check out our roundup of 18 examples of delightful holiday marketing campaigns, and use these ideas to fuel your own holiday marketing ideas.

18 Brilliant Examples of Holiday Marketing Campaigns

1) Coca-Cola: Drinkable Place Cards

What better way to celebrate your loved ones at the holiday dinner party than with personalized Coke bottles? Coca-Cola’s been selling cans and bottles with people’s names on them since they first launched their “Share a Coke” campaign in Australia in 2011 — and they’ve seen a rises in sales ever since. The drinkable place cards serve as a holiday-themed promotion of the larger “Share a Coke” campaign, and a great representation of another use case for their product.

2) REI: #OptOutside

It started with a letter addressed to its 5.5 million members. The letter announced plans to close outdoor retail company REI’s doors on Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving in the U.S.) at all of its retail locations, headquarters, and distribution centers. Instead, they invited their community to join employees in taking Black Friday off from work — and from shopping — to do what they love most: being outside.

To help inspire people for what to do with their day off, REI’s #OptOutside microsite featured hiking trails and adventure ideas. When the campaign was over, they sent the email below thanking their members for opting to spend time outdoors and with friends and family, rather than shopping in stores and online.

3) Dollar Shave Club: Has a Face

Here’s a great example of a simple, funny graphic that’s perfect for social media. Dollar Shave Club used this graphic in a sponsored Facebook post to show their razors are great gifts for any guy — because any guy with a face could use one, whether it’s your husband or your yoga teacher.

You can easily create graphics just like this one using PowerPoint. Here are 30 free PowerPoint templates you can download, which include detailed instructions on how to use the templates to create compelling visuals for social.

4) Hinge: OK to Get Down?

Their timing couldn’t have been better: I received this email from the dating app Hinge on a Thursday, the night before HubSpot’s holiday party — and the night before many other companies chose to have their holiday parties, too. The design of the email is as simple as can be. It’s really the hilarious copy that makes this email so great. Here’s to making good choices!

5) Lagavulin: Nick Offerman’s Yule Log

Actor, writer, and humorist Nick Offerman loves his whisky. He’s sung about it before, and this time, he’s filmed a Yule Log video for Lagavulin, his favorite whisky brand. What’s the video of, you ask? It’s 45 minutes straight of Offerman sitting in a leather chair next to a crackling fire … looking calmly at the camera.

“This is smart branding on Lagavulin’s part,” writes Kristina Monllos for AdWeek. “Creating an extended ad that can serve as a conversation starter—should consumers swap the traditional Yule Log video for Offerman’s at parties—will also get everyone talking about the brand.”

I’ve must say, this might rival Netflix’s “Yule Log” trailer from 2013.

6) JetBlue: How to Be a Thankful Traveler

Airliner JetBlue is renowned for its punny marketing emails, and its Thanksgiving promo email didn’t disappoint. It started with the cheeky, clickable subject line: “Family, friends, food & flying – all of our favorite F words!” Inside, they somehow fit 12 puns into one email. See if you can spot them all.

7) Oreo: Design a Pack of Oreos

Oreo continues to pump out fresh, innovative, and fun marketing content, despite having one core product since its debut in 1912. This year, Christmas started early for them: On November 11, they tweeted out an invitation to design and personalize a pack of Oreos for friends and family members. The design variations themselves are pretty simple, but the idea of pimping out an otherwise traditional-looking pack of Oreos is a cool idea and would make for a thoughtful gift.

8) Edeka: Wihnachtsclip – #heimkommen

Here’s a tearjerker for you from German supermarket Edeka. Their TV advertisement “Wihnachtsclip – #HeimKommen,” which translates from German to “Christmas Carol – #Homecoming,” is all about realizing what really matters around the holidays: spending time with family and the people you love.

In the ad, an elderly man prepares to spend yet another Christmas alone, since his kids usually cancel their planned visits last-minute. Then, the ad shows his various grown children receiving letters saying their father has passed away. When they arrive at home, though, they’re surprised to be greeted by their very alive and very healthy-looking father. He says, “How else could I have brought you all together?”

Other than the delicious-looking meal they share at the very end, there’s no hint that Edeka is a supermarket — but you can bet it’s emotional and shareworthy. The ad garnered 33.5 million views on YouTube within a week of posting.

9) HubSpot: #HolidayHub

Microsites are great ways to highlight a specific campaign or target a specific buyer persona. Here’s an example of a holiday-themed microsite HubSpot created, highlighting our #HolidayHub campaign and targeting ecommerce customers. (Check out a few more ingenious microsites in this blog post.) The site is filled with holiday marketing resources, which isn’t a far cry from the type of content we publish to our normal website — except this time, it’s themed.

The animated snow effect was created using HTML5 Canvas and JavaScript. You can learn how to implement an animated snow effect on HubSpot’s Design blog. Alternatively, you could create an animated GIF to create a feeling of animation: Here’s a beginner’s tutorial for creating an animated GIF in Photoshop.

10) Starbucks: Starbucks for Life

You’ve gotta love a good sweepstakes — especially if it involves coffee. For the second year in a row, Starbucks is holding a “Starbucks For Life” sweepstakes for their rewards members. Five lucky people will win one beverage and one food item each day for the next thirty years. (Hey, don’t shortchange me on my lifespan, here!)

Chances are, a sweepstakes like this that’s open to members only does wonders for prompting new sign-ups. Plus, it encourages members to buy Starbucks drinks more often: Registered rewards members get a code each time they make a Starbucks purchase using their rewards card, after which they can log in to StarbucksForLife.com and play a “game” where they enter the code. At the end of the game, they’ll learn whether they won. Not bad.

Here’s one of the handful of cute GIFs Starbucks created to supplement the campaign (which you can easily create on your own):

11) Spotify: A Year in Music

One great way to celebrate a year gone by is by doing a roundup. From the homepage of their “A Year in Music” microsite, you can either log in and see what your own, personal year in music sounds like, or you can opt to not log in and see what an average Spotify user’s year looked like. You can browse popular music from the year by genre, country, or both — which is a great way for Spotify to help its users discover new music. (Full disclosure: I just emerged from a rabbit hole of Turkish pop.)

It’s been quite a year. Find out how you soundtracked 2015: http://spoti.fi/1jOz587

12) Food52: Holiday Cookies from Around the World

What does a single product look like around the globe? That’s the question Food52 answers with this marketing email, featuring a whimsical graphic followed by photos and stories behind 46 favorite cookie recipes from all over the globe. In the full email, these recipes are followed by gift ideas for bakers including call-to-action buttons for buying cookie cutter sets, mixing bowls, and other fun tools from Food52.

13) HBO: 12 Days of HBO NOW

‘Tis the season of sharing, is it not? Well, the folks at HBO came up with a cool idea for letting their users share something that’s seemingly intangible: TV episodes. They’re releasing 12 episodes from their best television shows and letting users share them with an unlimited number of people — probably with the hop that recipients get addicted and want in on HBO NOW. Here’s what that marketing email looked like:

14) John Lewis: Man on the Moon

What was that? You weren’t done crying your eyes out after the Edeka ad? No worries: Here’s another touching advertisement, this time from U.K.-based department store John Lewis. As part of the campaign, John Lewis partnered with Age UK, an organization that helps some of the million older people who go for extended periods without speaking to anyone. You can donate to Age UK via the advertisement’s accompanying website.

15) Aldi: Telescope Christmas

If you liked the John Lewis “Man on the Moon” ad, then you might get a kick out of this UK ad for Aldi supermarkets. The ad pokes fun at the type of telescope the man on the moon uses to gaze at Earth, showing that Aldi offers many different kinds to choose from. The ad’s tagline? “Aldi prices are anything but astronomical.”

16) Zazzle: Haha Holidays

Consumers get a lot of emails from ecommerce businesses showcasing gift ideas from their websites. Here’s an example of one of these emails done well. In particular, they do a great job of grouping types or categories of products to make all their options seem much less daunting.

17) Mulberry: #MulberryMiracle

In the battleground that is Christmas advertisements, Mulberry stands out by giving the traditional Christmas Nativity story a twist. In their comedic ad, Mulberry pokes fun at themselves — especially with this line near the end: “Guys, it’s just a bag.”

18) Nudo Adopt: Final Christmas Delivery Dates

While many ecommerce emails showcase all the different things you can buy from a company, Nudo Adopt took a different approach. The premise of their business is letting customers “adopt” an olive tree in Italy and have its olive oil delivered to their doorstep. To ensure a delivery by Christmas, shipping dates are super important. This is why the holiday marketing email highlights the specific dates customers need to make a purchase by, by region.

An added bonus? A pair of eye-catching emojis in the subject line.

IK Multimedia iRig Pro

More Great Interface Options:

  • IK Multimedia iRig Pro audio/MIDI interface for iOS/Mac $105

MIDI Keyboard/Grid Controllers

iRig Keys MINI portable 25-key MIDI controller for iOS and Mac

iRig Keys MINI portable 25-key MIDI controller for iOS and Mac $80

Well, you know how much we love Akai’s best selling line of MPK MIDI keyboards, but we though we would gear this year’s pick towards a more versatile setup that works both on Mac and iOS, as well in the home studio and on the road. IK Multimedia has become known for its highly rated and affordable production gear for beginners and more experienced producers alike, so this year we will be highlighting the iRig Keys MINI portable 25-key MIDI controller for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Mac. This little, bus-powered keyboard packs in a lot of value for $79.99. Not only does it works with Logic Pro X and all your iOS apps, it includes Lightning, USB and MicroUSB cables to get you going right out of the box. It also comes with a host of iOS instrument apps, as well as some software and sample packs for Mac.

Akai MPK Mini MKII 25-Key MIDI Drum Pad and Keyboard

Gear/Accessories for Guitar Players

jamstik+ wireless smart guitar controller for iOS and Mac

jamstik+ wireless smart guitar controller for iOS and Mac $300

You may remember us reviewing the original jamstik guitar controller for iOS and Mac, but since that time the folks over at Zivix have released an updated model and a series of notable upgrades. Along with its genuine fretboard and real strings, jamstik+ allows guitar players to control instruments just like MIDI keyboards do on Logic Pro X and other DAWs, along with the plethora of interesting iOS synth and recording apps out there. This time around we are getting updated wireless connectivity, beta hammer-on tech, an interesting tap mode for soloing and more.

Guitar Pick Punch
iRig Acoustic

Headphones

Audio-Technica ATH-M50x headphones
Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO headphones

Audio-Technica ATH-M50x headphones $160
Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO headphones $150

Headphones are always a tough suggestion to make with so many solid options out there from companies like Sennheiser, Beyerdynamic, Sony, Audio-Technica and AKG. The Sony MDR-series and the AKG K-series options are always a good pick, but this year we are going with ATs and Beyers. The Audio-Technica ATH-M50x headphones are among the best selling and most popular out there. Not only will they work great for tracking and mixing, but they are much less bulky than some of the comparable options in the price and quality range. In our opinion, they also provide a nice balance between flat recording/mixing reference cans and a slightly more excitable, and “fun” consumer level sound.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, the bulky and rugged Beyerdynamic DT 770 PROs may not be as fashionable, but they sound fantastic and can be worn for hours on end. Don’t be fooled by the slightly lower price tag compared to the M50x, these are my personal favorite option in the price range and feel much more durable/expensive than the listing value.

More Recording/Mixing Headphones:

  • Sony MDR7506 Pro Headphones $78
  • Sennheiser HD 280 Pro Headphones $100
  • AKG Pro Audio K702 Channel Studio Headphones $235

Logic Pro X Apple Keyboards & Cover

Logic Pro X Apple Keyboards & Cover from $30

One of the best ways to familiarize yourself with the massive list of keyboard shortcuts in Logic is to get a keyboard with shortcut decals. We reviewed products from EditorsKeys that use real Apple keyboards with pre-applied, high-quality decals. The company also has wired versions for $149 and DIY keyboard covers for your existing Apple keyboards. However, there are also a few other cheaper keyboard cover options for your MacBook or desktop keyboard starting at around $30 Prime shipped.

Gear Dust cover

On-Stage/Studio Keyboard & Gear Dust Covers $8 to $16

An inexpensive way to keep your keys looking fresh and clean, these On Stage dust covers range from $8 to $16. A must have to go with your MIDI keyboard, synths, or other gear, especially if some of it goes out of rotation from time-to-time.

Here are a few more honorable mentions:

  • Teenage Engineering PO-12/4/6 Pocket Synthesizers from $63
  • Blue Microphones Yeti USB Microphone $105

Official BBC iPlayer app launches on Apple TV for UK users

CWJHikrWEAAkGax

As announced earlier in the year, the BBC has now launched an official iPlayer app for the Apple TV. The app uses native a tvOS interface, closely resembling the normal iTunes Store films and TV shows interface. The app is free but requires a TV license and is therefore only available to UK Apple TV owners.

9to5Mac Holiday Gift Guide: rare Apple collectibles & swag for the techie who has everything

my_first_computer_byte_v31
Apple fans are a dedicated bunch. Many of us diehards run out and buy every new gadget, making it nearly impossible for friends and family to come up with an original gift idea related to one of our biggest passions. My holiday gift guide includes items that you can’t buy from your local Apple store, but are sure to delight any fan of the company. These aren’t complementary products like a nice iPhone stand or Apple Watch band, but rather hard-to-find swag and collectibles that only real Apple fans would appreciate. Head below to take a look at my outside-the-box gift ideas for the Apple lover in your life:

Custom LEGO Macintosh Project:

One of the top gifts for anyone this year are LEGO kits. From intricate Star Wars projects to an adorable WALL-E, it seems like everything is getting the brick treatment, except for Apple gear. Luckily, famed LEGO builder, Chris McVeigh, created an amazing replica of the original Macintosh computer.

my_first_computer_byte_v3

McVeigh has shared a detailed how-to so you can build your very own LEGO Macintosh. The extensive 65-page instructions walk you through every step of the building process. There’s a full part list, complete with Element ID information that can easily be plugged into LEGO.com. Print the directions and hunt down each LEGO brick to score an amazing gift for any Apple fan. Note: McVeigh usually sells a complete project kit on his online store, but the listing is currently unavailable.

steve-jobs-statue-figure2

Steve Jobs Figure

Several years ago figures of Apple’s late CEO, Steve Jobs, started popping up everywhere. Apple was quick to shut down the sale of many of them, but they’ve made their way back and are selling steadily on eBay. A quick search on the online auction site will return a bunch of results in a range of price levels, but for a gift I’d recommend this listing priced at $16.13. It’s coming directly from China so you may have to pay for expedited shipping to get it in time for Christmas, otherwise standard shipping is free. The Top Rated Plus seller has multiple quantities available so you shouldn’t have a problem picking one up. I have one of these figures on my desk and see it as a tribute to the man who’s creations had such an impact on my life.

iconic-a-photographic-tribute-to-apple-innovation

Iconic: A Photographic Tribute to Apple Innovation

Apple products are hailed for their design just as much as their innovative functionality. The book Iconic by Jonathan Zufi ($50.82) uses gorgeous images of Apple products, prototypes, packaging, and more to tell Apple’s design story. It includes all the products you’d imagine like iPhone, iPad, and MacBooks, but also obscure peripherals and rare prototypes that you probably have never seen before. I have this book sitting in my office and randomly pick it up when I have a few free moments. The huge, detailed images are absolutely drool-worthy for any Apple fan. I’d also recommend checking out Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson and Jony Ive: The Genius Behind Apple’s Greatest Products by Leander Kahney.

apple-think-different-posters

Think Different ad campaign posters

One of Apple’s most recognizable advertising efforts was its Think Different campaign. It included the memorable “Crazy Ones” TV commercial and limited edition 24 x 36-inch promotional posters. The various posters depict historical figures with a small Apple logo and the text “Think Different.” As you’d imagine the original posters are big collector’s items and as such are pretty pricey. Trusted Apple dealer, The Missing Bite, has many for sale if you’re willing to pay up. eBay is another great place to look for these posters. Even a reproduction poster would make a great gift and it wouldn’t break the bank. Another option is this poster of the original iPhone US patent for $35 shipped from Amazon.

apple-employee-shirt

Apple T-Shirts

The only way to grab an official Apple t-shirt is to become an employee or visit the mothership in Cupertino. Since those aren’t practical choices for most last-minute holiday shoppers, I’d recommend heading to eBay. Many former employees put their new and used shirts up for sale, while some opportunists (read: scalpers) buy official merchandise from Apple’s Company Store and resell it at inflated prices. The other option is to buy a look-alike shirt at a fraction of the cost for the real deal. This eBay seller has t-shirts modeled after the current retail employee style with a small Apple logo for only $7.99-$14.99 plus shipping costs. Go with the Royal Blue color if you’re looking for the most authentic look.
